Deacon Spotlight
Sidney "Dee" Davis has been a member of NDBC since 2007 when he, Nancy and 1st son Ramsey joined. Since then the family has added now 2 year old Hans-Luca. Dee has been involved with the Marketing and Finance committees at the church. In his professional career he has been an entrepreneur in Atlanta since the age of 23 and is currently running his 4th company, a series of online buying guides. One fateful Sunday Dee and Nancy decided to visit NDBC even though labeled a "Baptist" church, after Dee sent Nancy to a Marietta Church to check it out and she returned home "fired up" about the 35 minute drive. What we discovered at NDBC was a warm, inviting and intelligent congregation and atmosphere that we have enjoyed ever since.

Pastoral Reflections By James Lamkin "Praying the Psalms" I'm inviting you to join me in a daily discipline during 2011. Don't worry, it doesn't involve giving-up chocolate, or adding-on ten miles a day to your exercise regimen. The discipline is to read and pray one Psalm a day. That's it. Read, pray, done. Daily prayer and Bible reading have been the meat and potatoes of the Christian diet for two millennia. The historic name for a variation on this is lectio divina. Go east 30 miles and you'll find the brothers at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers praying and reading seven times a day: Matins, Lauds, Terce, Sect, None, Vespers, and Compline. Most folk (including me) wouldn't devote their lives to that; but here is what I'm asking you to do for 2011: 1) Read one Psalm a day. (Since there are 150 Psalms we will read them through twice this year.) 2) Pray that God would use each day's Psalm for your spiritual growth that day. (Of course you could embellish the practice by journaling, using additional scriptures, writing-out your prayers, etc.) Here is what I will do: 1) I will publish a monthly Psalm-a-Day list. January 1 is Psalm 1. January 2 is Psalm 2. You get the picture. We'll continue 'till we get to Psalm 150 in late-May; then we'll start over. 2) I will write a weekly blog-like prayer based on a Psalm from the previous week. I will put it on the NDBC website and Facebook page; plus I could email or snail-mail it to those interested. For example, I might say: "God, last week I prayed the words of Psalm 9, 'I will give thanks to You with my whole heart.' But I didn't really mean it. Not on Tuesday when...! However, by your grace...." Here are the gifts I see in this discipline: 1) It will do me good. 2) It will do you good. 3) It will do us good! Those participating will be reading the Bible and praying together. We will be "on the same page." Eugene Peterson says that the Psalms are the gymnasium of prayer. They aren't fad diets or fashion trends or an exercise craze. The Psalms take the nuts and bolts of life...along with our loves and laments and longing...and our sins and successes...and then shouts them, sings them, whispers them, or simply sits silently before God. We start with Psalm 1 on January 1; and follow the numbers after that. Watch for a Praying the Psalms note from me the following week. |

Everyone is welcome to come down and join us for a wonderful selection of soup/chili and make a donation to the Hunger Fund for 2011. These monies are used to help support the Atlanta Community Food Bank as well as send aid to hungry people around the world. Last year we raised over $1,500 at the fun event! How do we do it? Well, your chef skills are needed! To volunteer to cook a pot of chili/soup or help clean/set up, contact Mona Stines at flyingMJS@bellsouth.net or 770-941-6478. If you'd rather bring 3 dozen brownies or cookies, contact Linda Clark at 404-237-2326. Call today and you'll be reminded closer to time! What a great gift to give this holiday season! It's a fun time together and the monies raised go to help those really in need. Can we count on you to help? |
