Generations of Generosity
By Elizabeth & Steven Sheeley Generations of Generosity is an intriguing theme for stewardship. Since we are new members of NDBC, we didn't have the privilege of knowing the generations of church members who came before us, nor do we have any family ties at NDBC. Generations of Generosity still resonates with us, however. First, we remember our own parents and grandparents who were faithful church members. Not only did they give sacrificially to the church, they intentionally taught us to give of our resources. Elizabeth's weekly ten cent offering probably didn't do much to bolster the church budget, but her father's lesson of tithing her $1 allowance each week lives on as a habit in our lives today. Secondly, we remember the church in which we both grew up in Springfield, MO. Generations of church members provided the resources for the beautiful building in which we were both dedicated, baptized, and married. Ministers, choirs, programs, and mission trips helped to form a foundation in which giving of our time, money and talents was important as we moved away and into other church families. Finally, we remember the generations of church members at our former church in Rome, GA, where are daughters, Kristen and Mary, were raised. The church's rich history of teaching children and youth how to be the "hands and feet of Christ" would not have been possible without the generosity of many. Faithful Christians always find themselves in the middle. We build on the foundation laid by those who came before, giving themselves and their resources to minister in God's name in their own time. And we look to the generations of those to come, knowing that God will call them to their own ministry. May God always find us faithful. |
The Many Ways to Pledge
You can submit your pledge to the Church in any one of the following four ways: (1) complete and sign a pledge card and mail it to the church, (2) call Cherie Akin, the Church's Interim Business Manager, at 404-237-8621 and give her your pledge over the phone, (3) send an e-mail to Cherie containing the amount of your pledge and stating whether you will be fulfilling your pledge in weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual payments, or (4) submit your pledge over the internet by using the form on our website. |
Deacon Spotlight
Every week, for 15 weeks, the Wednesday Northside Notes will spotlight a deacon, along with the deacon's Family Ministry List.
Jackie Poole has lived in the Greater Atlanta Area for most of her life. She joined Northside Drive in 1974 and soon after met Jerry through their mutual participation in choir and Sunday School. They have recently celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary. Their church community has enriched their lives providing support, intellectual stimulation, a place for spiritual growth, and many treasured friends.
Jackie recently retired from SCI Georgia Funeral Homes, a group that includes the H.M. Patterson locations in Atlanta. She served as Director of Community Relations for Atlanta and Editor of the corporate newsletter for SCI locations in the Eastern US Market. She is a Board Member of The Florence McDonnell Counseling Center and the Georgia Bar Association Committee on Fee Dispute Resolution. At Northside Drive she serves on the Marketing Committee, the Diaconate, and the Care Committee.
Retirement has enabled more time for family, which includes parents in their 90's, four children, and one grandchild. She is also able to indulge her passion for reading and enjoys hiking, gardening, and babysitting granddaughter Hannah.

Joyous Toys
Northside Drive will be participating in Buckhead Christian Ministries' "Joyous Toys" to be held at Peachtree Presbyterian Church December 13-17, 2010. Our collection baskets will be located in the Narthex and outside the Fellowship Hall from Sunday, November 21 until Sunday December 5. Toys appropriate for infants, toddlers, preschool, elementary and middle school aged children would be much appreciated. Please do not wrap toys since parents will be "shopping" for presents for their children who otherwise would not be receiving presents at Christmas. Northside Drive members have contributed to this worthwhile mission for many years. Thank you for helping make Joyous Toys a success again this year! If you would be willing to help staff the sale the week of December 13-17 or have any questions please contact Donna McLarty (770-433-2771 or 404-314-9547) |

A Celebration of Lovefeast
Sunday, December 5, 2010 @ 7 PM
In the SanctuaryCome celebrate our 3rd Annual Lovefeast with us as we show our love for Christ, community, peace, and the Season of Advent. We will sing traditional seasonal hymns, celebrate in prayer, light candles, and share in the breaking of bread ( Moravian Lovefeast buns from Old Salem in NC) and the sharing of the cup (sweetened coffee from Land of 1000 Hills) in this centuries-old tradition. Our youth and volunteers will be helping lead this worship experience. Hope to see you there! Sundays -- December 5, 12 & 19
Room 202 at 9:30 AM
"The Characters of Advent: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"
This Advent series will study some of the lesser characters of the Christmas drama, such as Herod, Zechariah, and Joseph. The class will take a closer look at their roles in the story of Christ's coming, and what their behaviors and attitudes might say to us as the world anticipates Christ's coming again this Christmas. |
Warm a Heart, Warm a Body
Join some women of the church, Tuesday, December 7, from 9:30-1:30 as we gather to replenish our supply of fleece blankets. Bring three yards of fleece, (a yard and a half of each color) and fabric cutting scissors and learn to cut and tie to make a much appreciated baby blanket. Or, just bring yourself to help tie off the sides and enjoy the fellowship. |
Christmas Poinsettias
Poinsettias will be placed in the Sanctuary, December 19-26. If you would like to purchase a plant, put your name, a check for $20 and your designated message (i.e., in memory of..., in honor of..., in thankfulness, to the glory of God, etc.) in a Poinsettia envelope located in the Narthex at the flower table. To place an order by phone, contact Cherie Akin at 404-237-8621. Plants can be paid for in person or by mail and may be picked up December 27, following the morning worship service. Plants left after that date will be distributed to retirement homes in the area. Deadline for orders is December 12. |

The Care Committee provides meals for church families who could benefit from a little love and attention, because of health issues, a death in the family or perhaps the happy confusion of a new baby. We also work together on the receptions that occasionally follow the funerals of our church members. If you would like to add your name to this list of volunteers, please call or email Sylvia Dick at 404-261-0473, sylvia.dick@comcast.net.
