NORTHSIDE NOTES - November 3, 2010 |
2011 Stewardship Campaign
"Generations of Generosity"
Giving is a personal and private privilege. Everything we have and are is from and belongs to God, like a loan we have a lifetime to decide how to use. A universal question is "How much do I need?" The universal answer is, "a little more than I have". Many of us, if we had more, would waste it. If we had less, we would get by.
Christian thought says that one day each of us will face God and account for our use of the talents and blessings given us. That's a scary thought.

Deacon Spotlight
Every week, for 15 weeks, the Wednesday Northside Notes will spotlight a deacon, along with the deacon's Family Ministry List.
Ruth Kramedjian joined NDBC in June 2007. This "homecoming" to a church community that expresses its love in so many ways has filled Ruth with great joy. Ordained as a deacon at NDBC, she is in her third year of service on the diaconate. She is a member of the Art & Soul Church School Class and chairs the Adult Education Committee this year. Ruth and her husband, Armand, are in the process of renovating their home, which was flooded by the Chattahoochee River in September 2009. Ruth is an artist with degrees in drawing, painting and art history from UGA. She is an avid gardener and is currently working on a series of handmade books and a new series of collages made with hand painted/dyed papers. Ruth and Armand often hike the nature trails around the city, and they visit with much loved grandchildren in Virginia as often as possible.
Her Deacon Families are:

Yoga: Stretching My Christian Faith
You might have recently seen a story on CNN about an unnamed minister in an unnamed Atlanta Baptist church who thinks yoga can actually further Christian faith and practice. That was I. I guess free publicity about Northside Drive Baptist Church is not too much to ask of CNN Broadcasting? This story was mentioned on the news from a recent Atlanta Journal Constitution column responding to Albert Mohler's article on his website referring to yoga as an un-Christian activity. Of course, many columnists, yoga teachers, and religious leaders spoke against this notion. The AJC felt my view, as a Baptist minister whose church actively promotes and practices yoga, would be relevant to the column.
My wife, Amanda, is a Certified Yoga Instructor and teaches yoga at Northside Drive. I also practice yoga as well. Of course my views are different than Al Mohler's in his recently posted blog, "The Subtle Body - Should Christians Practice Yoga?" In this post, Mohler believes that Christians who practice yoga fail to see the contradictions between their Christian commitments and their embrace of yoga. This widespread and all too common judgment regarding yoga as a pagan religion involving weird sex while using the body and mind, instead of Holy Scripture, to encounter the divine is dripping with popular misinformation.
Yoga is not a religion; it is a philosophy. It is a physiological and psychological practice. Often times, people assume that yoga is a religion because it grew up along side Hinduism and Buddhism and because many Hindus and Buddhists practice yoga. Any religious or non-religious person can practice the philosophy of yoga: Christians, Jews, Muslims, Agnostics, and Atheists. America is a melting pot of ethnicities, religions and cultures. It is impossible to be a Christian in America without absorbing other ideas just as those of other religions and philosophies absorb Christian ideas.
In his blog post, Mohler states, "Yoga begins and ends with an understanding of the body that is, to say the very least, at odds with the Christian understanding. Christians are not called to empty the mind or to see the human body as a means of connecting to and coming to know the divine. Believers are called to meditate upon the Word of God---an external Word that comes to us by divine revelation---not to meditate by means of incomprehensible syllables."
I believe our bodies and our minds can be vehicles for encountering God. Of course they can also hinder us from communing with God as responsively and passionately as we should. If yoga helps to "empty" the mind long enough to let in a piece of the Divine, I think it can be a benefit to the practitioner and humanity. Christ went up into the mountains to pray; Jesus was on his knees and face in the Garden of Gethsemane; contemporary Christians sway, dance, and sing to music; pious prayers are spoken with the intention of the body being in position of reverence and release. As beings created in the image of God, we can and should use our bodies and our minds to draw closer to the Divine.
As active Christians, it is important for us to always stretch our faith. I would remind Mohler and all Christians to not be afraid of yoga. I think our Christian faith is strong and flexible enough to handle a little stretching and meditating. Don't you? |
Pondering the Possibilities of a New Hymnal
For a while now, several members (including me) believe we, as a church, have outgrown our current hymnal, the Pilgrim Hymnal - both in depth and breadth. The hymnal was published over fifty years ago and it has been our Sanctuary hymnal for about thirty-five years. It is composed mostly of hymns from the English (Anglo-Celtic) tradition, as well as a few examples from the Swiss Psalter, German chorale, and European carols. As a result, the Worship and Music Committee (Karen Massey, chair) has established a sub-committee to consider the validity of these concerns and, if needed, choose a new hymnal.

Invite to (Baby + Baby) Shower
The news that Kristofer Schleicher and Karen Perry are going to have twins is cause for joy all around the church. A long-time member and youth group leader, Kristofer has mentored many youth in the church. Since joining NDBC and meeting Kristofer, Karen has been generous in contributing her time and talents.
To celebrate the happy upcoming event and to support Kristofer and Karen during this special time, church friends are hosting a baby shower for them on Sunday, November 7, at 12:15 PM in the Fellowship Hall. All church members who would like to attend are invited to the shower. Light refreshments will be served.
For those who like gift suggestions, the Schleicher/Perrysare registered at Babies R Us and New Baby Products.

"The President's Analyst"
Starring James Coburn and Godfrey Cambridge. - 1967
Greenwich Village satirist Theordore J. Flicker made one of the zaniest spy spoofs of the '60s---the ultimate in paranoia and conspiracy. James Coburn stars as a hip New York psychiatrist recruited by his mentor to take on the president as his exclusive patient. After quitting his job because of the stress, he's forced to go into hiding when spies from all sides want to know his secrets. The social and political satire never lets up, as the usually unflappable Coburn becomes completely neurotic. Godfrey Cambridge is hilarious as his cohort and former patient (his opening monologue about self-hatred is a classic), and so is Severn Darden, who plays a charming Russian agent. A true original with the utmost retro appeal today. (by Bill Desowitz) |
