NORTHSIDE NOTES - October 13, 2010 |
2011 Stewardship Campaign
"Generations of Generosity
Northside Drive's 2011 Stewardship Campaign launches October 31. As Northside Drive celebrates its 58th birthday this year, we also celebrate Generations of Generosity that have sustained our church financially through 58 years. In doing so, we honor our past and embrace our future as a faith community in metro Atlanta.
Our Baptist roots oblige each member of the church community to be responsible and attentive to church finances. Why pledge? Because Northside Drivers have inherited a legacy of responsible stewardship. Our 2011 budget and the current economic climate challenge us to acknowledge and share our resources.
- Why participate? Because we have something special at Northside Drive Baptist Church.
- We have memory. Our longtime members have inspired us to give generously and live within our means.
- We have a mooring. Northside Drive keeps us connected to our spiritual selves and to each other.
- We have a message. We are Christians who value questions, not just answers, and ecumenical worship.
- We have a mission. Our goal is to live out the simple but powerful message that "God is love" to all.
November is an appropriate time of year to reflect on the gifts we have been given and to share our resources with gratitude. Collectively, we can meet the challenges of 2011. Do your part, in whatever ways you have been blessed.

Deacon Spotlight
(Every week, for 15 weeks, the Wednesday Northside Notes will spotlight a deacon, along with the deacon's Family Ministry List.)
Virginia Gilbert has been a member of NDBC since 1983. She and JB met in the choir and married in the church in 1987. They raised their son James, surrounded by this wonderful, caring fellowship. He is now a student at The University of Alabama. Virginia enjoys singing in the Sanctuary Choir, playing bells in the bell choir, and serving on the Children's Committee and Church Council. She also enjoys substitute teaching in the Children's Church School Class. Virginia retired from teaching, after serving 30 years as a public school teacher in Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia. She is, once again, working in this career as a third grade teacher at The Westminster Schools. Virginia enjoys reading, visiting with friends and family, watching University of Alabama football, and walking. Most of our congregation probably doesn't know that Virginia is a direct descendent of Pocahontas. : )

Theological Worlds
Want to know more about how your personality and theology relate to your family, friends, and fellow members of the congregation? Come better understand your theological self in order to better understand others. Come explore in community. As a person of faith, you may wonder why or how someone could use the name of God (or Jesus) to promote/protest something you think God (or Jesus) never would? How can two people, both Baptists, be near polar opposites on social or theological issues? Why do I get more out of a certain style of worship or preaching that differs from my friends? How do I look at God? Jesus? The Church? Questions like these will be explored in these sessions. A large part of this study will be based on Worlds Within a Congregation: Dealing with Theological Diversity, by W. Paul Jones (Abingdon Press, 2000).
You can feel free to purchase this book from your favorite bookstore or online. Purchase of the book is NOT required, it is simply a resource.
Each Wednesday Night 7:30-8:30PM

Fall Adult Education Seminar:
This I Believe
"This I Believe is a national media project that invites Americans from all walks of life to share brief essays on the core values that guide their lives. The project is based on a popular 1950's radio series of the same name hosted by Edward R. Murrow. The goal of This I Believe is not to persuade Americans to agree on the same beliefs; the goal is to encourage Americans to begin the much more difficult task of developing respect for and a deeper understanding of beliefs different from their own." What greater challenge do we as Americans and citizens of the world have in 2010?
The Adult Education Committee of Northside Drive invites you to a two-evening seminar, Wednesday nights, October 27 and November 3 from 6-8 PM, hosted by Cathy Wooten. We will listen to essays by famous Americans like Helen Keller and Eleanor Franklin and discuss them. Then we will tackle the challenging task of writing statements of our own core values. You may choose to share your statement or just listen to others and ask questions; it's up to you. We believe that we can all grow through the exercise of thinking through and putting our values down on paper. As some decide to share their personal statements and we all reflect on them, we will come to know and understand ourselves and each other better.
A light, simple supper ($5 per person) will be served from 6-6:30 PM followed by a meeting and workshop from 6:30-8 PM. Childcare will be provided. We need you to make a reservation for dinner by calling or emailing the church office. Come discover what guides your life and that of your fellow church members: This I Believe, coming this fall to NDBC. |
