NORTHSIDE NOTES - September 1, 2010 |
Pastorial Reflections By James Lamkin
"Revive Us Again..." "Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?"
This question is a prayer prayed by a Psalmist (85:6) long ago. Yet, in spite of centuries of distance, cultural differences, and a foreign language---the message still comes across. There is a yearning in the human heart to experience wonder and joy and a sense of connection to God. To do this is to be fully alive. In that spirit, the lively Hebrew poet penned, "Revive us again." He must have liked Gospel songs, because, those words sure sound like one. In fact, it is one (and written by a Presbyterian no less!). Revive us again. Fill each heart with Thy love. May each soul be rekindled With fire from above!
Of all the songs sung this summer, that's one we haven't gotten to. But on the other hand, I think God did some reviving without it. The comment I've heard most for the past two months has been, "I didn't know we sang so well."
The a cappela stanzas sung by the congregation each week have blown me away. The sound of the singing fills the room and bulges the windows. The combined power of familiar tunes, plus earthy texts, plus intimate space in a pretty-full place, makes for powerful music.
Already, I'm grieving the scattering of the congregation once we get back to the sanctuary. Then again, everybody could sit near the front (as soon as the Netherworld freezes over)!
For me, some summer highlights have been: the energetic congregational singing, the haunting chanting of the Psalms by Paul and Nicole, the almost weekly strings (viola, violin, cello), the peculiar accompaniment of the harpsichord to The Doxology, the silent signing and graceful gestures of Catherine Miller, plus my amateur attempt at once-upon-a-time leading (ala Cliff Barrows) of This is My Story, This is My Song.
The eclectic smorgasbord was not accidental, for we were working at a theme in worship with the rich mixture of Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs.
And yes. There's one more memory. I doubt three-year-old Isaiah Lewis can define Hallowed or delineate degrees of trespasses (even the Deacons have trouble doing that). However, little Isaiah can say all of The Lord's Prayer; and with the chapel's acute acoustics, nearly everyone in the room has been tenderized by his small voice and child-like faith.
There is a yearning in the human heart to experience wonder and joy and a sense of connection to God. For me, this happened within our church in our chapel this summer. |
Going Back to School
By Rev. Mike Gregg Your Minister of Educational Life is going back to school! I not only wish to help the members of Northside Drive in their own educational and spiritual growth, but also seek to continue growing in my own educational endeavors. I have begun a four year Doctor of Ministry Degree at McAfee School of Theology. It is a part-time program that I will accomplish while still being your full-time minister as well. I have the honor of joining with many of Northside Drive's McAfee students and professors (like Larry McSwain and Karen Massey) in this challenging journey towards a doctorate. It is exciting to be a learner again and gain experience and knowledge in the midst of an academic setting. My topic of interest and possible "thesis" subject will be the investigation of how the universal Church needs to adapt in various ways to respond to the needs of an increasingly postmodern world. Northside Drive is in a unique point in its life and development that will provide good information and insight into the role of the institutional Church in a postmodern culture. Thus, in my journey to receive a Doctor of Ministry degree I might call upon you to help me gain valuable research and practical information about the this church, its members, and how this church exists in our society and culture today. I would also like to thank the Personnel Committee, Staff, and leaders of Northside Drive Baptist Church for providing support, encouragement, and resources for me to embark on this educational adventure. I would not have had the motivation or stamina to do this without you. Thank you. It will be a long yet fruitful four years. know that you and I together will grow in unforeseen and wonderful ways as I complete the Doctoral Program. Again, thank you for your support in this process. |
Morning Worship in the Chapel
Energy, Intimacy & Hymnody.
July 4-September 5, 2010
Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible. Intimacy: The chapel is the church's original sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere. Hymnody: Though the choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall), the chapel invites lively congregational singing from the Baptist Hymnal. |

Triple E: Baptimergent
September 14, at 11 AM in the Fellowship Hall.
The title of the book and the postmodern movement, Baptimergent, is a combination of the words Emergent and Baptist. Emergent Baptists are those who believe there is more to God, Jesus, and God's kingdom than current Christian denominations can define. Rev. Mike Gregg describes the importance of being Baptist in a postmodern world. He contends that as worshippers become more postmodern, they might actually become more Baptist. |

2010 INTERFAITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD
Many thanks to everyone who has signed up to participate in this year's Habitat for Humanity mission project. Each construction worker and food volunteer will play an important role in making a family's dream of owning a home come true. This year's house is located off Hollywood Road at 2492 Abner Place NW, Atlanta, 30318. The home owner is Debbie Watson. Living with Debbie will be her daughter, Nicole Samuels and Nicole's two sons, Andrey Samuels, 9-and Quincy Samuels, 2. Debbie works at Northside Hospital in the food service department. In her spare time, Debbie is very involved with her church, Bread of Life, and she loves to decorate. Debbie is eager to provide a stable home for her daughter and grandsons. This project is possible because of our congregation's commitment to Habitat Atlanta's mission of providing affordable quality homes and support services that promote successful home ownership. Your donations of food, funds, time, energy and hard work are greatly appreciated. The Missions Committee will keep you posted on the progress of this exciting mission project. |
