Pastoral Reflections
"Summertime...
And the Living is Easy?"
Awhile back, I spent a week listening to sermons offered by the fairest in the land: Barbara Brown Taylor, Fred Craddock, Tom Long, Will Willimon, and some lesser knowns...like Desmund Tutu. A preaching conference came to town and I went. One of the things I heard one of these Homiletic Home Run Hitters say is: "We preach to people who come to church fatigued." They said that church folk they see in the pews look exhausted. This is a fascinating observation. Evidently, being a Human Being is no easy thing! Best I can tell, no other species on Earth goes around looking pooped. A horse is weary after a long gallop. A dog pants after a long-winded rabbit chase. But, it sounds like something else is going on with human folk. Chronic exhaustion is more than the sum total of exertion and effort. Most people live very leveraged lives. It's like a vent I read in Sunday's AJC. Something like: "I worry constantly about being laid-off from a job I don't like in the first place." We have a list a mile long of why we are so anxious; and over the list we fret and fear. But then...the Sun moves, the Earth wobbles, and Summertime comes. One thinks of Gershwin's immortal classic from Porgy and Bess. The song promises that there is no need for tears cause, the fish are jumping', the cotton is high, Daddy's rich, and your Ma is good lookin'---so hush little baby; don't you cry. Yet, we do cry; and our tears come from deep wells of worry---maybe even deeper than our limited lifetimes. If I add-up the grief among us, it is a full tank. I want to bless you to observe the Sabbath this summer. Sabbath, you know, means STOP! It means rest. I offer a Pastoral Prayer for Northside Drive Vacationers each summer. With a refrigerator magnet's help, you might even pray it daily.
O God of voyages and voyagers, Thrill us with not yet discovered possibility. Protect us with the 23rd Psalm's certainty. Strengthen us when the destination still is distant. Empty us of stress's poison. Open us...vacate us...through Sabbath's vacation. Rest us beside still waters and restore our souls. Teach us through the strangely familiar. Comfort us through the familiarly strange. Befriend us through a stranger's kindness. Connect us with the Holy Spirit's presence. Keep us as we say daily The Lord's Prayer. Heal us when tender feet weary. Bless us when it is time to return... For only by leaving, can we ever come home. Amen

Morning Worship in the Chapel
Energy, Intimacy & Hymnody.
July 4-September 5, 2010
Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible. Intimacy: The chapel is the church's original sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere. Hymnody: Though the choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall), the chapel invites lively congregational singing from the Baptist Hymnal. |

Greetings from China!
by Chelsea Clarke Ke Hong Peace Corps Volunteer China 16 I have enjoyed hearing from all of you! There are so many wonderful and exciting things happening in each of your lives, and I am so glad that I can continue to be a part of it, even at such a long distance! I have been in China for 14 days, but it seems like an eternity! A typical week's schedule consists of a total of 24 hours of language training, 9 hours of TEFL training, 4 hours of cross-cultural training, and several "mini" sessions in between. On top of all of this I am still learning to live with my host family (although they have been absolutely wonderful), study and do my language homework, and write lesson plans (which I've never done before). So, it's easy to see why it feels like I have been there forever! This week there has been special emphasis placed on the TEFL aspect of training, because Model School starts next week. The Peace Corps has arranged for (maybe bribed, or tricked) Chinese students to be our guinea pigs as we practice our newly acquired teaching skills. During Model School volunteers are paired up, and together they must come up with two weeks of lesson plans. Our assignment is to teach Oral English, and we alternate teaching/observing days, with days 1 and 10 being team-teaching days. Each class session lasts 90 minutes, and our evaluations will have an impact on our permanent site placement. Translation: there is a lot of pressure placed on us during these next two weeks!!! But, I have a great partner, and we our theme is American Entertainment (sports, music, parties, going to dinner, amusement parks, dating...), so I think we will do well. I was able to take a bit of a break from all the work this weekend, which was definitely a welcomed rest! I took a day-trip to the Yellow Dragon and the Wuhouci Museum with my host family! Both have been documented with pictures on my blog: http://chelseaclarke.weblog.com. Be sure to check out the newest entries of my Food Journal---definitely and experience! For those of you interested in learning a bit more about the beginning of Peace Corps' work in China, I encourage you to check out the book River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze River, by Peter Hessler. In 1996, 26-year-old Peter Hessler arrived in Fuling, a town on China's Yangtze River, to begin a two-year Peace Corps stint as a teacher at the local college. Along with fellow teacher Adam Meier, the two are the first foreigners to be in this part of the Sichuan province for 50 years. Expecting a calm couple of years, Hessler at first does not realize the social, cultural, and personal implications of being thrust into a radically different society. In River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze, Hessler tells of his experience with the citizens of Fuling, the political and historical climate, and the feel of the city itself. http://www.amazon.com/River-Town-Years-Yangtze-P-S/dp/0060855029/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1279121777&sr=1-3 I hope you will all continue to keep me informed about your daily happenings. I may be a little slow to respond, but perhaps I am integrating into western-Chinese culture :) Best wished for the remainder of the week! |
Dr. Larry McSwain authors biography of Dr. Jimmy R. Allen
A biography of Dr. Jimmy R. Allen, former Senior Chaplain of the Big Canoe Chapel for almost 11 years, has been completed by Dr. Larry McSwain, Professor of Leadership at the McAfee School of Theology. Dr. McSwain holds the Watkins Christian Foundation Chair in Ministry and serves as associate dean for Doctor of Ministry Studies. The title of the book to be released in July 2010 is Loving Beyond Your Theology: The Life and Ministry of Jimmy Raymond Allen.
This title covers the life of an extraordinary Baptist. Jimmy Allen served as the last 'moderate' president of the Southern Baptist Convention concluding his second term in 1979, the first year of the emergence of a new 'fundamentalist' leadership of the convention. His life parallels the movement of Baptists in the South from a folk people rooted in a predominantly rural ethos into an urban, increasingly educated, and diverse people. He was an activist of the first order, engaging in state and national social agendas of civil rights, strict separation of church and state, and the application of the gospel in all areas of life. His commitment to social action was often lived out in a highly public way in partnership with President Jimmy Carter and it took him to China, Israel, Iran, and many other regions of the world to promote aggressive mission efforts. He was among the few Americans to visit with the Ayatollah Khomeini during the Iranian hostage crisis. Allen's ministry was often lived amid the stresses of mental illness and dysfunctions in his family as well as a major crisis with the HIV and AIDS viruses that took the life of his daughter-in-law and two grandsons. His is a story of trust in a faithful God amid personal suffering that led to remarkable contributions to America's religious faith.
