Morning Worship in the Chapel
Energy, Intimacy & Hymnody.
July 4-September 5, 2010
Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible. Intimacy: The chapel is the church's original sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere. Hymnody: Though the choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall), the chapel invites lively congregational singing from the Baptist Hymnal. |
The Pinnacle
Due to the summer months, there will not be a Pinnacle for July 18-31. |
Thank You, Northside Drive!
I personally wanted to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated supplies to people affected by the flooding in Nashville, TN. We were able to get a full carload of food, water, and cleaning supplies. My mother and another representative from Belmont University in Nashville came to NDBC, picked up the supplies, and took them to the Campus Ministry Department at the University. The Campus Ministry workers then were able to get the supplies into the hands of organizations helping throughout destroyed areas of Nashville. Thank you for helping my hometown and those who lost everything in this destructive flood. You are truly doing the work of Christ in the world.
Blessings,
Rev. Mike Gregg |
Letter from Tom & Jane Jones
June 11, 2010 Dear Northside Drive Baptist Church Friends: Tom and I have moved to Charlotte, NC as of last weekend. We couldn't bear the thought of leaving Atlanta, and resisted for a long time. However, our family has persuaded us to move close to them in North Carolina and we finally gave in. We couldn't bring ourselves to tell anyone because it was so painful to think of saying good-bye. But, now that we are here in Charlotte (actually Matthews, NC), we want you to know how much we will miss you and we appreciate all your thoughtfulness of us and your love in so many ways. You will always be dear to us, and will always be in our hearts and prayers. Please come to see us if you are close; and, of course, we will be dropping back to Atlanta occasionally. Our dearest love always, Jane and Tom Jones (For Tom & Jane Jones' mailing address or phone number please contact the church office at 404-237-8621.) |

A Pastoral Prayer for NDBC Vacationers and Travelers
by James E. Lamkin
O God of voyages and voyagers, Thrill us with not yet discovered possibility. Protect us with the 23rd Psalm's certainty. Strengthen us when the destination still is distant. Empty us of stress's poison. Open us...vacate us...through sabbath's vacation. Rest us beside still waters and restore our souls. Teach us through the strangely familiar. Comfort us through the familiarly strange. Befriend us through a stranger's kindness. Connect us with the Holy Spirit's presence. Keep us as we say daily The Lord's Prayer. Heal us when tender feet weary. Bless us when it is time to return... For only by leaving, can we ever come home. Amen |

Pastoral Reflections "Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs"* "The Bible's gymnasium of prayer is the Book of Psalms." Eugene Peterson said that. I think he is right. The Psalms contain the full-body-pull-ups of praise. They have the "drop and give me 20" push-ups of confession, plus the stomach crunches of lament. Also, there is the endless treadmill of longing, "How long O Lord, how long...?" All who go on retreat and pray with the monks at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA, know of the ancient power of the Psalms. The monastic brothers pray all 150 Psalms every month! Imagine that---chanting three Psalms a day! Think how the language, the passion, the permission for complaint, the encouragement of devotion, and the lifelike up-and-down swells of the Psalms would infiltrate your life. In essence...one's essence...would become prayer itself! While we Northside Drivers worship in the chapel this summer, we will pay more attention to this poetry that is the combustion engine of the Bible. On one Sunday we will chant a Psalm. On another Sunday we will sing a Psalm to a familiar hymn tune. This ancient liturgical practice of chanting/singing Psalms is oddly relevant. Why do you think Gen-Yers travel to Iona, Scotland; and Gen-Xers flock to Taize, France? These are wells of ritual. They draw from deep waters that quench spiritual thirst in ways that the sprinkler system of a projector screen can't. Twice in the New Testament epistles, we are encouraged to "admonish one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord." Forget not that the early church's only hymnal was The Psalms. However, soon they added new hymnody born out of their experience in Christian community and with Jesus Christ. Some of these songs were commandeered, bootlegged, from Greek poems. For instance, the "Christ Hymn" in Colossians may have been a philosophic song extolling wisdom. Many hymn writers have followed suit. For instance, the tune to A Mighty Fortress is Our God may have its roots in the taverns of Germany! And Amazing Grace may have been an English ballad (one theory is that it was a slave song overheard by John Newton himself). Particularly in England, new spiritual songs were not met without opposition. The old-guard insisted on singing psalms only. In fact, their resistance is referenced in the rousing hymn, We're Marching to Zion: "Let those refuse to sing who never knew our God. But children of the heavenly king may speak their joys abroad!" Northside Drive Baptist Church's worship is a rich liturgical tapestry of hymns and spiritual songs; and the texture will be even more elegant and intimate as we relish the psalms we will sing this summer.
