NORTHSIDE NOTES - June 23, 2010 |
Pastoral Reflections Fish Tales Two years ago, my father died. His death on Memorial Weekend came just before Father's Day. Each year, when Father's Day rolls around, I think of him; and I remember a promise I made to him not long before he died. The promise? I said that I would teach his great-grandson how to fish. Once-upon-a-time a call came from my son, Stuart. He phoned with the news, "The ultrasound says that the baby is a boy!" I wasted no time buying the little fellow a new fishing rod and reel and a tackle box. Since he was going to be my grandson and my father's great-grandson, I knew he would need them. I also phoned my father and told him the news-that his soon to be born great-grandson already had his fishing gear ready to go. "Good," my father said, "You can teach him to fish!" It surprised me that he said that. I was expecting something like, "I want to be there when he lands the first one!" Or maybe, "Bring him over here to Louisiana and I will show him how!" But no. My father delegated the task to me. I replied, "Well, I can do that, but I thought you would want to teach your great-grandson to fish?" Here's what my father said. He said, "No. I won't live that long." That was the first time I heard my father speak of his life-expectancy here on this ole' Earth. His directness, even at 89 years old, surprised me. I paused, then asked, "Well, how old does a kid have to be to learn to fish?" He said, "Oh...maybe four or five?" "So you're not planning on living four or five more years," I asked? This time, he paused...then said, "Well yes! I am planning on living that long!" We laughed. Turns out, he was right the first time. He didn't live that long. He died just after Sean's first birthday. My grandson is three years old now. He's been asking about fishing. He's been practicing with his nifty Superman rod and reel that is just a little older than he is. So we went. As some crickets gave their lives for a good cause on a hot, Macon, Thursday afternoon, we wet hooks, and Sean caught two fish! Almost immediately, he seemed to know that the best thing about fishing is not fishing---it is about telling stories about fishing. From how he watched the cork bob up and down, then under, to how he reeled the fish in, to how he held them up for a picture, to how he beautifully answered the inevitable question fisherman are asked, "How big?" His ready answer, "My size." Two fishes. Not many, really. But then again, how many does satisfaction require? The favorite story of the early church---the one they told over and over again---was about Jesus feeding the 5,000. But he needed help to do it. He needed a boy with a little bread...and...two fish. |
A Pastoral Prayer for NDBC Vacationers and Travelers
by James E. Lamkin
O God of voyages and voyagers, Thrill us with not yet discovered possibility. Protect us with the 23rd Psalm's certainty. Strengthen us when the destination still is distant. Empty us of stress's poison. Open us...vacate us...through sabbath's vacation. Rest us beside still waters and restore our souls. Teach us through the strangely familiar. Comfort us through the familiarly strange. Befriend us through a stranger's kindness. Connect us with the Holy Spirit's presence. Keep us as we say daily The Lord's Prayer. Heal us when tender feet weary. Bless us when it is time to return... For only by leaving, can we ever come home. Amen |
The Maddox Pastoral Residency
Northside Drive Baptist Church has always been a church that encourages followers of Christ to listen for their calls to vocational ministry. Northside Drive wants its children, youth and young adults to view a calling to ministry as an important profession. The new Maddox Pastoral Residency program will assist Northside Drive in nurturing the work of the Holy Spirit within the lives of motivated, interested and gifted young believers as they test their gifts and consider a calling to vocational ministry. Excellent pastoral leadership is imperative to having a vital and successful congregation. Thus, the training of those who feel a calling to vocational ministry should be an important aspect of fulfilling the Gospel work of Christ. However, pastors perform their ministry within the congregational setting and therefore new ministers need a healthy congregational context in which to practice ministry under the supervision of experienced ministers and supportive lay leaders. It is my hope that the Northside Drive Baptist Church Maddox Pastoral Residency will cultivate ministry formation in the most appropriate context for developing pastoral competencies---the church itself. The Maddox Pastoral Residency is intended for a student who has completed a seminary degree before entering their first full-time ministerial job. Our first Maddox Pastoral Resident for the 2010-2011 year will be Rev. Eric M. Cain. He will be a full time resident of the church and will maintain his relationship and leadership of the Youth Group. He will be gaining experience in other leadership areas of the church such as pastoral care, worship, preaching, children, sustainability, and missions. Eric will have a formal installation in worship sometime in July. Until then, we welcome Eric as a full time resident and are excited about what he will contribute to the growth of Northside Drive Baptist Church. For further information on the Maddox Pastoral Residency program at Northside Drive Baptist Church, go to www.northsidedrive.org, the Ministries menu, the Residency and Internships tab. |

Morning Worship in the Chapel
Energy, Intimacy & Hymnody.
July 4-September 5, 2010
Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible. Intimacy: The chapel is the church's original sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere. Hymnody: Though the choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall), the chapel invites lively congregational singing from the Baptist Hymnal. |

June 29 -- Sallie McFague Crisis of Sustainability

July 6 -- Crisis of Thinking it All Over
Through the 20th century to present, Christianity has undergone vast changes. It is in fact probably more accurate to speak of "Christianities" than Christianity. Scientific knowledge, globalization, industrialization, and oppression have catalyzed this splintering as Christianity reacts to the varying crises of history.
