NORTHSIDE NOTES - May 5, 2010 |
Nashville Flood Relief Opportunities
As many of us have undoubtedly heard, the recent historic flood of Nashville has left that city devastated. Many have lost everything as they escaped the floodwaters with only the shirts on their backs. As most of the surrounding Nashville area has been a historic flood plain, most homeowners do not have flood insurance. The Red Cross estimated that 900 people were currently being housed in emergency shelters. Local universities such as Belmont University have mobilized to reach out to the community. As Christians and Northside Drivers, we have an opportunity to reach out and be the hands and feet of Christ, both on site and at a distance for our friends and family in Tennessee. The needs are great, and help will be needed for many months to come as the citizens of Nashville begin to clean up their homes and businesses. Below are just some of the ways we can join together and get involved immediately. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Rev. Mike Gregg at mike@northsidedrive.org and McAfee Student, Kristy Eggert, at kristy.eggert@gmail.com.

When Severe Weather Comes
on Sunday Morning
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan: 1) The pastor and the moderator will make the decision. 2) The moderator will notify the Chair of the Diaconate. 3) The deacons will use the "phone tree" to notify the congregation. 4) One of the ministers will send an email to all those on the church's email list (electricity permitting) and place a notification on the church's voice mail. 5) One of the ministers will notify the media.
| Toiletries and Cosmetics Collection
The Missions Committee is collecting toiletries and cosmetics for a local women's shelter, The Extension's Barbara J. Crafton Center which serves the entire metropolitan Atlanta area. The Center is a 20-bed women's shelter for homeless, addicted women. The Center's mission is to facilitate a transformation that empowers chemically dependent women to become sober, accountable members of society and to serve as a recovery resource for the community. Addiction recovery services through a comprehensive Residential Recovery Program is provided as well as outpatient counseling and a variety of outreach initiatives. At Christmas, Northside Drive provided over 20 gift bags and miscellaneous kitchen items to the Center. During the month of May, please bring any hotel soaps, shampoos, lotions, shower caps, cosmetic gift items and cosmetic bags to church. There will be a collection box in the Narthex and outside the Fellowship Hall. Thank you for your support. If you have any questions, contact Beth Laxton ( laxton2125@charter.net or 770.438.7963). |
