NORTHSIDE NOTES - April 21, 2010
"Nuts and Bolts of the Job Please Store Owner"

by H.M. Cauley, for the AJC

There are few places Susan Harlan would rather be than among the plumbing fixtures, hoses, electrical switches, hammers and garden supply aisles of her store, Vickery Hardware in Smyrna. As a young child, nuts, bolts and pipes were among her playthings as she hung out in the store her father bought in 1965.

Now, as an adult, Harlan is more than adept at making repairs in her own home. She's keeping a 45-year family tradition alive as Vickery's owner and one of the few women in the industry to own and operate a small, independent hardware store.

"As a kid, I used to play on top of cement bags," Harlan said with a laugh. "My two kids then grew up here, too. I'm really into tools and love plumbing."

Harlan's family has deep connections to the hardware industry. Her great-uncle spent 50 years in the business. One of her two brothers owns a hardware store in Peachtree City. Their tie to the Smyrna store goes back to 1965, when her father bought what was already a well-established community business

"This store was started in 1950 by a Mr. Vickery, so it's actually 60 years old," Harlan said. "We kept the name when we took it over. At that time, it was on South Cobb Drive, but when they widened the road in 1974, we moved to Concord Road and have been here ever since."

Though she's now continuing a family tradition, Harlan didn't start out to do so. A graduate of Cobb County's Campbell High, she went on to study art at Georgia State while still working with her dad in the store. She married, had two children and became a widow in 2003, the same year her father died. That was also the year she stepped into the owner's role, supported by a cast of seasoned employees.

"We have several people who have been here 10 years or more," she said. "There is one young man who started working with us when he was 15 and he's now 26. We have about 16 people working here to keep the place open seven days a week."

Harlan also found she was one of the few female owners in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

"There are a lot more women now then when I started," she said. "But there was a long time when I'd go to a hardware meeting and be the only woman there. Now, there are more coming in as store owners and managers."

Along with the store, Harlan took over a problem her father grappled with for years: competition from the big orange chain headquartered a few miles away.

"When Home Depot opened in the '80s, things were really tough," she said. "We used to carry a lot of power tools and big-ticket items, but we don't anymore. We just can't compete. But where we do compete, and where I think we do a better job, is service. When you come in my store, we meet you at the door and help you with whatever you want. A lot of times people come in and don't even know how to do what they want, but we can walk them through it. We even have one gentleman who comes to our store when the clocks change each year just to get one of our guys to go out and change the clock in his car. You don't get that kind of customer service with a big business."

Harlan, who lives just four miles from the store, doesn't see its tradition continuing with either of her children.

"My son is an artist in New York, and my daughter is more mission-minded," she said. "So don't think I'll be passing it on. But I hope I can be around another 20 years or longer before I have to make that decision."

WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News Anchor Monica Pearson to Keynote Agape's Spring Benefit

Agape Community Center, will host its 3rd Annual Spring Benefit, Thursday, April 29, 7-9 PM, at the Ansley Golf Club in Midtown.

The fundraiser titled "Giving Wing to Better Tomorrows"will feature a cocktail buffet, a live auction and special guest speaker Monica Pearson, Emmy Award-winning anchor for WSB-TV Channel 2.

"In an effort to continue helping those affected by the economic downturn and recent area floods, we are hopeful that this event will bring in funding to serve the dozens of families that come to us every month for support," said Nell Benn, executive director. "The demand in our service area for assistance with rent, utility bills, food and the overall encouragement offered through the programs at our center has nearly doubled this year thus increasing the importance of this event."

The evening's theme, "Giving Wing to Better Tomorrows,"coincides with Agape's butterfly logo, which represents rebirth or giving the community new hope that they can achieve and succeed.

"From Former Mayor Shirley Franklin to Ron Clark, each year we have been fortunate to have wonderful keynote speakers at our annual fundraiser," said Bonnie Harris, president of Agape's board of directors. "We are even more delighted that Mrs. Pearson will join us this year in raising awareness about the good works of this fantastic organization."

Agape is an eminent model in Atlanta for successfully providing programs that empower families to break the cycle of poverty. Its strong volunteer base provides vital connections for the children, families and seniors of the Bolton Road area in Northwest Atlanta. Proceeds from this event will enable Agape to continue as well as expand its many vital programs including:

*Providing 150 children tutoring and
nutritious meals each week
*Assisting more than 60 middle and high school
students in completing college tours
*Allowing more than 50 families in crisis to keep
the heat and electricity on in their homes
*Helping 80 youth to participate in a five-day-a-week
summer camp for the entire summer

Spring Benefit tickets are $125 per person. To purchase tickets or become an individual or corporate sponsor, call 404-367-3950 or email nellbenn@agapecc.org.

Bring whatever gardening/landscaping tools (chainsaws, rakes, hoes, etc.) to share and prepare for all the challenges that nature will provide (think gloves to counteract poison ivy and plenty of sunscreen).

If you can't join us for the day (conflicts in schedule, sick, allergies, etc.), perhaps you could loan us your (well-marked) tools, gloves, etc.  Just bring them by the church office no later than 4 PM, Friday, April 30.  You can pick up your tools after church on Youth Sunday, May 2 (see Mike Gregg).

Pack a lunch and stay for as long as the spirit moves you.  Come help Northside Drive to heed the call to care for our environment!  For information please contact Zach Bay (606-584-0440).

When Severe Weather Comes
 on Sunday Morning

As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions.  Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip.  Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:

1) The pastor and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The moderator will notify the Chair of the Diaconate.
3) The deacons will use the "phone tree" to notify the congregation.
4) One of the ministers will send an email to all those on the church's email list (electricity permitting) and place a notification on the church's voice mail.
5) One of the ministers will notify the media.
