"The Great State of Taxes..."

Got 'er done!  Turned 'em in!  There is sunshine in my heart!
Today, I mailed my tax return.

I am always surprised at what a relief that small completed action gives me.  I feel a little like John Bunyan's Christian in Pilgrim's Progress who drags his heavy burden up hill and vale seeking relief but finding none.  When it comes to my taxes, gloom, despair, and agony await.  (Actually, Liz does more of the work with the income tax report than I do; but I complain more.)

Every year's end I slog through The Slough of Despond.  It is shaped like a filing cabinet full of receipts, invoices, stubs, forms, lists, W2's, 1099's, contributions, mileage notes, unfiled medical bills, records and spreadsheets.  It's enough to make me lose my religion.  No wonder the blinking light on the computer screen is called a curser!  Also, I nearly lose my spouse in the process by saying things like, "I told you it was your job to save those papers!"  A conversation like that never ends well.

In the nick of time, the end mercifully comes.  Christian arrives at the "place of deliverance" and the burden he has borne on his back falls away.  I'm sure the burden was a bundle filled with IRS tax forms.

When the envelope full of papers drops through the postal slot, I am free at last.  Thank God A'mighty, free at last.  Well, at least somewhat free for another year.  Even Jesus had to render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's.

As much as I complain about the great state of taxes, I don't mind them so much.  I choose to be a citizen in a nation that expects this of me.  I could leave; but for the time being, I want to live in a land where I keep this covenant.  Maybe some sick folk will get treated, some kids will get educated, some roads repaired, and maybe if I live to be old enough to get some Social Security while there's still some left, I'll party.

And where did all this belief in community and covenant come from?  I learned it growing-up in church.

Seder Meal

PARTICIPATE IN A PASSOVER SEDER MEAL
Wednesday, March 24, at 6:45 PM
Dr. Nancy deClaissé-Walford
of McAfee School of Theology

Every spring, our Jewish brothers and sisters celebrate the Passover feast. It is an eight-day celebration, begun with the Seder, the Passover Meal. Passover is one of the high holidays---the most holy of days---in the Jewish year. It marks the single most important event in Jewish history, the Exodus from Egypt. And Passover is a joyous celebration. In that event, God delivered a people from oppressive slavery, and called them to be the people that would make this God known to the rest of the world.

Celebrate the Passover Seder Meal at Northside Drive on Wednesday night, March 24, beginning with dinner at 6 PM, and the ritual of the Seder Meal at 6:45 PM, in the Fellowship Hall.  Please make reservations through Renee Gamache at 404-237-8621.
Palm Sunday

Children and Youth Waving Palms

Sunday, March 28, at the 11 AM, Worship Service

Attention all children and youth!  Sunday, March 28, is Palm Sunday!  We want you to help us praise Jesus in worship by waving palm branches in the air!  Please meet Mr. Mike in the Narthex before the 11 AM Worship Service on March 28, to get your palm branches and instructions about waving them in the service. Bring a friend to Palm Sunday!
Missions Volunteer Opportunity

On Saturday, March 27, a free health clinic will be held at the Georgia International Conference Center for the state's uninsured residents. The clinic is sponsored by Georgia Free Clinic Network and the National Association of Free Clinics.

There is a great opportunity for the Atlanta Faith Community to support this effort to provide health care for the uninsured in Georgia.

Volunteers can register now for shifts between 9 AM-5 PM on March 26, when the clinic will be set up, and between 7 AM-7 PM on March 27. (www.gfcn.org

Medical volunteers needed for the Atlanta clinic include doctors of medicine, doctors of osteopathy, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, emergency medical technicians, medical administrators, licensed clinical social workers and more.

Non-medical volunteers are needed to help with documentation, logistical support, patient intake and translation, as well as to be greeters and escorts. Help also is needed for setting up the clinic, as well as breaking it down.

Maundy Thursday

April 1, following supper in the Sanctuary.

Maundy Thursday will include a 6 PM meal followed by a worship service including communion at the rail.  In it we will recall Christ's mandate, "Love one another as I have loved you."  The last part of the evening will be Tennebrae: A Service of Shadows.  Just as we lighted candles on Christmas Eve, we snuff them this night.

Children's Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Sunday, April 4, at 12:15 PM
On the front lawn of Sanctuary

Invite the children of your friends and relatives to come to Northside Drive's annual Easter Egg Hunt right after morning worship.  Also, please donate 1-2 dozen stuffed plastic eggs to be used for the event.  You may drop off the eggs at the church office or in the Children's Sunday School room on Sunday.
Volunteer Sign Up and Committee Nominations Underway.

Deadline: April 4, 2010

Please remember to take the time to sign up for any volunteer committees where your gifts and interest lie and that best energize you.

The nomination process is about the congregation choosing the leadership that they are so led to nominate. As Baptist, we believe in congregational polity, and this is one way the congregation has to act on that privilege. April 4th is the deadline for turning in church leadership nominations. The Nominating Committee will then tally these; and based on the number of nominations for each individual, these persons will be invited to serve on the Diaconate, Personnel Committee, Finance Committee, and lead us as Moderator.

A member of the Nominating Committee will be in the Narthex during the month of March. Please turn in nominations and volunteer sign up forms by placing them in one of the nomination boxes placed throughout the church, or my mailing it to the church office, or by emailing it to the church office.

Buckhead Christian Ministry

A MISSION OPPORTUNITY WITH BUCKHEAD CHRISTIAN MINISTRY

Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM) provides emergency assistance to individuals and families of all backgrounds and faiths.  Its programs are designed to address the unique needs of the working poor and focus specifically on preventing hunger and homelessness through education, and the provision of food, clothing and financial assistance to individuals and families in crisis.

The families that come to BCM for help represent the working force of Atlanta. They are people you talk to every day; school bus drivers, janitors, teachers' aides, medical technicians, waitresses and store clerks. Even though they work full time, an emergency such as an ailing child, a reduction in work hours, a home fire, or car accident can cause their tenuous situation to unravel quickly. The financial pressures of these emergencies often result in decisions that create even more difficult problems to overcome.

As one of the 27 churches which participate in this cooperative ministry, Northside Drive has been asked to join in the effort to restock BCM's food pantry.

The following items are needed:

·        Instant oatmeal or grits
·        Canned vegetables
·        Canned fruit
·        Dried beans
·        Canned beans
·        Peanut butter
·        Cornbread mix
·        Macaroni & Cheese
·        Spaghetti & Spaghetti Sauce
·        Canned Tuna
·        Rice
·        Canned soup

Items may be left in the bins labeled "BCM" in the narthex and near the fellowship hall.  The collection of items will continue through March 28

A Summer of Love

What if you could spend the summer discovering what it really means to love?

You know the kind of love that comes from serving side by side with someone who is nothing like you, cooking a meal for a homeless woman, negotiating how you share living space with people you don't even know. And maybe even confronting the challenges and triumphs life throws your way and then reconciling them with what you believe about God.

Certainly not a typical summer. And one you won't easily forget.

CHANGE YOUR LIFE. CHANGE THE WORLD.

In collaboration with the United Church of Christ, the Alliance of Baptists will launch the Summer Communities of Service program in the summer of 2010. The Summer Communities of Service program is a mission-learning opportunity that will place young adults, ages 19-30, in host congregations across the country.  The young adults will live in intentional Christian community as they serve as volunteers four days a week in a hands-on capacity with a local ministry connected with a congregation, an existing domestic Alliance mission partner, or a community agency committed to social justice.

For more information or an application please visit the Alliance of Baptist website.

To reach someone for conversation, call 866-745-7609, ext. 204 or email the Alliance of Baptist.
Mission Trip 2010

MISSION TRIP 2010
Crawfordville, Georgia
Touching Taliaferro with Love

One hundred miles east of Atlanta is Taliaferro County (pronounced Toliver), one of the poorest areas in Georgia. Since the summer of 2001, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship churches have provided Bible school and day camp for the children in this county.  Members of Northside Drive have been involved in Touching Taliaferro with Love since its beginning. This June 20-25 Northside Drive will be leading week two of TTWL and we need volunteers.

Can you tell a Bible story, teach a craft, provide a recreational activity, (assist in any of these activities) or guide a group of lively children from one activity room to another?  There is a place for you to share your talents and love with the children n Taliaferro County.  Mark your calendars for June 20-25. Participate for one day or all five-the choice is yours. Contact Susan Harlan or Rhonda Harris for more information and to sign up for the trip.

Trinity Presbyterian Church
Career Networking Ministry

The recession has been creating havoc on our economy for the past 18 months and, as a result, there is over 10% of the work force without jobs.

Trinity Presbyterian Church in Atlanta has begun a new ministry focused on helping people in the community who have recently lost their job or are interested in changing jobs.  The new ministry is called Trinity Career Networking Ministry.  The goal of this ministry is to provide unemployed people in our community with job search skills and resources including:

 -- resume writing
 -- interviewing skills
-- internet as a job searching tool
-- networking with other job seekers, human resources professionals, executive recruiters, and business executives

The Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Career Networking Ministry invites anyone who is in a career transition to attend our meetings.  Please visit our website at www.trinityatlcareers.com.

When Severe Weather Comes
 on Sunday Morning

As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions.  Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip.  Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:

1) The pastor and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The moderator will notify the Chair of the Diaconate.
3) The deacons will use the "phone tree" to notify the congregation.
4) One of the ministers will send an email to all those on the church's email list (electricity permitting) and place a notification on the church's voice mail.
5) One of the ministers will notify the media.
