PASTORAL REFLECTIONS
"Lent @ NDBC"
Wasn't it only yesterday that we lit the candles on the Advent Wreath? Surely it is not already time to get out the Passion Cross?
Though hard to believe, it is time.
As we make our way through the valley of this prayerful season, here is a bird's eye view of the Lenten terrain and theme: The Art of Pilgrimage---A Lenten Journey.
Resources. Both on the NDBC website and in the Narthex are copies of Mike Gregg's brochure on the Stations of the Cross. In addition, he will be providing daily meditations materials on the Internet and in print.
Wednesdays. As is our tradition, a weekly meal will be at 6PM, followed by a service in the chapel at 6:45PM. The first will bring us the imposition of ashes made from the palm branches of Palm Sunday 2009. The topics will be:

Sundays. As you are aware, the Sundays are not of Lent; they are in Lent and not counted as part of the 40 days. However, the music and movement and message of the services will ponder our faith as a pilgrim people. We will light one candle on the Passion Cross weekly.
Holy Week. Palm Sunday will be a festive day as the worship leaders enter waving branches and singing. Of course, the dark juxtaposition of Friday's cruciform shadow is never far away.
Maundy Thursday will include a 6:00 p.m. meal followed by a worship service including communion at the rail. In it we will recall Christ's mandate, "Love one another as I have loved you." The last part of the evening will be Tennebrae: A Service of Shadows. Just as we lighted candles on Christmas Eve, we snuff them this night.
Good Friday's noon until three service always surprises me at the depth of the sharing we hear from parishioners. With meditations built around The Seven Last Words of Christ, with autobiography woven in. I always leave as hollow as a tomb.
Holy Saturday. We wait. We do nothing. We allow the hollowness to make space for a hallowed place.
Easter Sunday! Oh mercy! Brass will play. Guests will come. The resurrection will be celebrated with the congregational singing of The Hallelujah Chorus. (And yes, a non-liturgical Easter Egg Hunt will follow the service.)
Lent will be quite a pilgrimage. At NDBC it is a beautiful, but challenging, art form that speaks of the journey of faith. Let us begin.

Mardi Gras, also known as Carnival and Fat Tuesday, is celebrated all over the world as Ash Wednesday approaches. Our eighth Mardi Gras Feast will include Cajun food (catered by our own NDBC members), beads and masks. Sunday, February 14, in the Fellowship Hall.
To make a reservation for the meal, you may use the Welcome card in the pew rack, call the church office, or email your reservation to info@northsidedrive.org no later than the Thursday noon before the event. Cost: $10 adults, $7 child, with a $25 family cap. On the menu: jambalaya, crawfish etouffee, cajun chicken and seafood chowder with dessert. |

Lent is a time of penitence and self-examination as we move towards Easter. It helps us to investigate our motivations and intentions while better understanding the presence of Jesus and the nature of God. It is important for prepare our hearts during the Lenten season so that the power of the cross and the miracle of the resurrection can be experienced with clarity and simplicity.
One of the ways the Lenten season will be observed is through communal fellowship and worship. Each Wednesday of Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 17, we will have *dinner at 6PM in the Fellowship Hall and then a contemplative worship service in the Chapel at 6:45PM. Each service will include the ambience of candles and incense, the hymnody of longing and hope, and silence for confession and prayer.
We hope that this Lenten season will be one of sacrifice and longing that culminates in great joy.

*Preceding the Lenten program there will be supper with Chick-fil-A or Jason's Deli served at 6PM. The boxed meals are $5.00 per person, with a $25.00 family cap. Unplugged Friday Dinners

Young adult Unplugged evenings-These are casual dinners at our homes where Mike will bring the main course and everyone else brings a side item. They are on Friday nights once a month at 7PM. EASTER LILIES
Sales begin February 21, 2010
Our chancel will be decorated with white lilies on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010. Orders for the lliies will being February 21 and end March 28!
If you would like to purchase a plant, put your name, a check for $20 and your designated message (i.e., in memory of..., in honor of..., in thankfulness, to the glory of God, etc.) in an Easter Lily envelope located in the Narthex at the flower table. To place an order by phone, contact Carolyn Scott at 404-237-8621. Plants can be paid for in person or by mail.

Study Shows Increase In Atlanta Hunger
ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) -- A national study estimates more than 58,000 Atlanta-area residents a week are depending on food pantries, an increase from a few years ago.
Hunger in America 2010, conducted by Feeding America, the
nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization, reported on more than 37 million Americans receiving emergency food assistance through the Feeding America network.
Locally, the study reported that 58,900 different people are
receiving emergency food each week through a network of more than 700 nonprofit partner agencies served by the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
The findings represent a 39 percent increase in emergency food distribution in the Atlanta food bank's 38-county service area since the findings reported in Hunger in America 2006. |

THE BELMONT UNIVERSITY CHORALE
The Belmont University Chorale from Nashville, TN will be participating in and providing special choral music for the 11AM worship service at NDBC in Atlanta on March 7, 2010. Belmont Chorale is one of the earliest performing ensembles in Belmont's musical history and is an audition group. It is a select mixed ensemble of 52 voices that performs diverse literature from all genres. Chorale has toured the U.S. as well as abroad, and has produced several recordings and will be celebrating 40 years of performing in 2011. The Director of Choral Activities is Dr. Jeffery Ames. |

EUFAULA HERITAGE ASSOCIATION
Home and Garden Pilgrimage Tour The Flower Committee will be sponsoring a day trip to the Eufaula Heritage Association's Home and Garden Pilgrimage Tour (Alabama's Oldest Tour of Homes) on Friday, April 9. The cost is $69.50 per person. Please make payments to Northside Drive Baptist Church. Cancellations will be accepted prior to March 15. No refunds will be given for reservations made after March 15. Cancellations can only be made if there is a waiting list. The trip will take place regardless of the weather. The price includes roundtrip luxury travel coach with restroom, reclining seats and audiovisuals, catered cafeteria lunch at First Baptist Church, our own personal tour leader, admittance to the homes and gardens, and an afternoon tea on board the trip home. Tickets are limited to the first 50 paid patrons and the event is open to guests of church members. The deadline is March 15, or when the charter bus is full. CAREER NETWORKING MINISTRY
The recession has been creating havoc on our economy for the past 18 months and, as a result, there is over 10% of the work force without jobs. Trinity Presbyterian Church in Atlanta has begun a new ministry focused on helping people in the community who have recently lost their job or are interested in changing jobs. The new ministry is called Trinity Career Networking Ministry. The goal of this ministry is to provide unemployed people in our community with job search skills and resources including: * resume writing * interviewing skills * internet as a job searching tool * networking with other job seekers, human resources professionals, executive recruiters, and business executives The Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Career Networking Ministry invites anyone who is in a career transition to attend our meetings. WHEN SEVERE WEATHER COMES
ON SUNDAY MORNING
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:
1) The pastor and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The moderator will notify the Chair of the Diaconate.
3) The deacons will use the "phone tree" to notify the congregation.
4) One of the ministers will send an email to all those on the church's email list (electricity permitting) and place a notification on the church's voice mail.
5) One of the ministers will notify the media.
