NORTHSIDE NOTES - January 13, 2010 |
"inclusive. inquiring. involved."

By Rev. Mike Gregg
Ever since the shhhhhh... Methodists... "borrowed" our slogan, "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors," it has been difficult to tell people in an easy phrase who we are at Northside Drive Baptist Church. We are so much more than Christian or Baptist. In a nutshell, we are place where you will find... -- A smaller, more personal church where you can be known -- Opportunities for spiritual growth and open-minded inquiry -- Hands-on service that supports our community and the world -- A tradition of liturgical worship -- Close friendships across generations -- A welcoming and loving spirit But as you can tell, that is way more than we could put on the cover of a worship bulletin or the top right hand corner of a website. So as the Marketing Committee was creating a new brochure for the church, three words came to the surface as to the identity of Northside Drive Baptist Church.
First, we are inclusive. This has been a word used at Northside Drive for decades and describes who we are as a people of God. We believe that the wide arms of God surround people of different ethnicities, races, denominations, religions, cultures, genders, and orientations. And believe it or not, that is drastically different than how many people and churches view and interact with God. Northside Drive sees God as a God of love, life and inclusiveness.
Second, we are inquiring. The word inquiring describes who we are as intellectual beings. We are a church that seeks to educate and be educated on theology, the Bible, and the world. We are free to come to God and to each other with the complex questions of life without the fear of being laughed at or turned away. We are a church who lives out our questions in community and in grace.
Third, we are involved. From the Food Bank, to the Moncrief Center, to Habitat for Humanity, to Guatemala and beyond, we are a church that is involved in our community and in our world. We give a strong percentage of our budget to missions programs and we have many volunteers intimately connected to organizations throughout Atlanta and the world. Northside Drive is a very involved church.
As you notice our slogan "inclusive. inquiring. involved." on our publications and on our website, it is my hope that you will get a sense of how Northside Drive Baptist Church is well-rounded in its purpose to live out the intentions of God in Atlanta and the world. |

SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY 2010
Happy New Year! Hope that everyone is ready to celebrate Souper Bowl Sunday on January 31 (one week early) in the Fellowship Hall after church. Everyone is welcome to come down and join us for a wonderful selection of soup/chili and make a donation to the Hunger Fund for 2010. These monies are used to help support the Atlanta Community Food Bank as well as send aid to hungry people around the world. Last year we raised a record $1,646 with over 140 people participating! How do we do it? Well, your chef skills are needed! To volunteer to cook a pot of chili or soup, contact Melissa Bryson at melissabryson@att.net or 404-816-7221. If you'd rather bring 3 dozen brownies or cookies, contact Linda Clark at 404-237-2326. Rather set up/clean up? Contact Susan Dew at 404-252-5715 or susandew@bellsouth.net.
It's a fun time together and the monies raised go to help those really in need. Can we count on you to help? |

CHURCH-IN-CONFERENCE
The regularly scheduled January 20 Church-in-conference is being moved to Sunday, February 7, following the worship service. The Finance Committee has asked for more time to allow for more pledges to come in. At that time, they plan to present a modified budget for 2010. |
Each Sunday from now through the month of February a representative from the Flower committee will be stationed outside the Narthex. To donate flowers for our worship services the cost is $85, or they can be shared for $42.50. For more information or for questions, please contact Nancy Davis at 404-252-9154. |
WHEN SEVERE WEATHER COMES
ON SUNDAY MORNING
As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan: 1) The pastor and the moderator will make the decision. 2) The moderator will notify the Chair of the Diaconate. 3) The deacons will use the "phone tree" to notify the congregation. 4) One of the ministers will send an email to all those on the church's email list (electricity permitting) and place a notification on the church's voice mail. 5) One of the ministers will notify the media.
