ttwl PASTORAL REFLECTIONS

By Rev. James Lamkin

"Thank You"*

A few weeks ago, I officiated at my last uncle's funeral: Uncle Elton. He was the seventh sib of seven siblings.
I began Uncle Elton's eulogy with the same words I began my father's eulogy just last year: "Thank you."
One of my father's favorite sayings was: "Thank you for being good to us."  He was the most naturally grateful human I've ever met.
Since gratitude grows when shared, and before the "old year passes" too far out of sight, I wanted to say, "Thank you" to many folk who have helped make Christmas happen for the congregation this year.  I've watched people do as the old Christmas carol instructs: "let every heart prepare Him room."  I've seen their fingerprints.
I won't call names.  Rather, I'll name some of the bunches of worker bees that have made this an amazing Advent.    Here goes:
Flower folk.  Of course!  Arrangements, abundant and beautiful, have adorned the chancel, hung from the balcony rails, covered doorways, and welcomed all who entered the Narthex.  My thanks to the Flower Committee and poinsettia placers.
Also, the Paraments Committee wrangled wicks and wax and candle oil---and without incident!  No "flame out" this year with the Advent Wreath.  It faithfully lighted our way to Christmas Eve's manger.
And choir (bell choir included)!  Extra rehearsals and much effort made the season's music, especially the Hodie!, a holy experience.
Once again, the Worship Committee's good idea for the Hanging of the Green went remarkably well.  Just enough.  Thanks for your hard work, before and after.
The Children's Committee pulled-off the Pick-up Christmas Play on December 24th.  Halos, wings, and crowns fit close enough which was its own miracle!  Plus the Communion Committee kept us fed with real bread.
Audio folk were spot-on.  Ushers ushed and deacons deaced, and a breakfast crew had coffee and cake waiting for us when we crossed the Christmas finish line.
Some of us enjoyed the season even more, because the Adult Ed. Committee helped us Unplug the Christmas Machine before the thing got out of control.
Last, but not least, the staff.  My colleagues.  Much of their work is invisible.  There's more planning, printing, proofing, posting, and picking-up than you would believe.
I know that God does the big work at Christmas.  But even Santa needs elves.
I am grateful to all who upped our aptitude for Christmas this year.  As my father used to say, "Thank you for being good to us."

SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY 2010

Happy New Year! Hope that everyone is ready to celebrate Souper Bowl Sunday on January 31 (one week early) in the Fellowship Hall after church. Everyone is welcome to come down and join us for a wonderful selection of soup/chili and make a donation to the Hunger Fund for 2010. These monies are used to help support the Atlanta Community Food Bank as well as send aid to hungry people around the world. Last year we raised a record $1,646 with over 140 people participating!

How do we do it? Well, your chef skills are needed!  To volunteer to cook a pot of chili or soup, contact Melissa Bryson at melissabryson@att.net or 404-816-7221. If you'd rather bring 3 dozen brownies or cookies, contact Linda Clark at 404-237-2326. Rather set up/clean up? Contact Susan Dew at 404-252-5715 or susandew@bellsouth.net

It's a fun time together and the monies raised go to help those really in need. Can we count on you to help?

24th ANNUAL WOMEN'S RETREAT

April 16-18, 2010
Blue Boar Inn
Robbinsville, North Carolina

SPACE & TIME ARE LIMITED

Reservation deadline is Sunday, January 31, 2010. Make your reservation with a $100 deposit (made out to Blue Boar Inn) & give it to Joyce Wilson (770-773-3333) or Virginia Gilbert (770-333-8933).
  WHEN SEVERE WEATHER COMES
ON SUNDAY MORNING

As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions.  Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip.  Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:

1) The pastor and the moderator will make the decision.
2) The moderator will notify the Chair of the Diaconate.
3) The deacons will use the "phone tree" to notify the congregation.
4) One of the ministers will send an email to all those on the church's email list (electricity permitting) and place a notification on the church's voice mail.
5) One of the ministers will notify the media.
