PRAYER MEETIN'
WEDNESDAYS
September 9-November 18, 2009

What ever happened to "prayer meetin's?" Our needs are so immense that two minutes of prayer at church every week seems rather trivial.  At NDBC we would like to bring prayer to the forefront of our Wednesday night activities this Fall through study, sharing, silence and song. We think we can do this by getting back to basics and joining God and each other in prayer each Wednesday at 6:45PM.

Remaining Schedule:
November 11 - Mike Gregg (Responsibility: The Lost Sheep, Coin and Son)
November 18 - James Lamkin (Acceptance)

Preceding the "Prayer Meetin" there will supper with Chick-fil-A and Jason's Deli alternating weeks, served at 6PM.  The boxed meals are $5.00 per person, with a $25.00 family cap. To make a reservation for the boxed meal, you may use the Welcome card in the pew rack, call the church office, or email your reservation to
info@northsidedrive.org no later than Noon the Monday before the event.
THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON
Sunday, November 15

Following the worship service there will be a Thanksgiving luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. On the menu: pork loin, sweet potatoes, stewed fruit, a vegetable, salad and dessert.  $7 for adults, $5 for children, with a $25 cap for a family.

ADVENT COMBINED ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL
December 6, 13, & 20
9:30AM, Room 206

Whether it's memories of caroling, Christmas pageants, or Christmas Eve services, the hymns of Christmas are some of the most evocative parts of the season for many of us. They refocus our spirits and remind us of the holiness and mystery of God's incarnation.

Dr. Karen Massey will be teaching a three-session Advent Study explaining the history behind some of our favorite carols: O Come, O Come; Emmanuel; Silent Night, Holy Night; Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

Focusing on the ways in which words and music can speak to the core of our experiences, the Combined Adult Church School will spend time in reflection, conversation, and simple enjoyment of these beloved hymns.

Youth ReCharge 2009

RECHARGING AT RECHARGE!

NDBC Youth joined other youth and adult leaders from across the state at the second annual ReCharge youth fall spiritual retreat on the weekend of October 2-4. The retreat is sponsored by CBF-Georgia and was held at the beautiful Woodland Christian Camp about an hour west of Atlanta. Youth participated in workshops, worship experiences, and activities related to this year's theme "Logos" (Word), focusing on the spiritual discipline of reading and studying Scripture. Youth were also provided an entire afternoon of "free time," which many took advantage of to go canoeing on the lake, hiking, relaxing in the cool warmth of the fall afternoon, play Frisbee with friends, or any number of other ways to enjoy the wonders of nature.  Other highlights of the weekend included a bonfire and a photo scavenger hunt in which youth creatively interpreted selected Scripture passages and took photographs for a community slideshow.

Below are some words from some of our youth and leaders who attended the retreat:
"It was a great experience for me and I can't wait 'til next year."
-Emily

"The retreat at ReCharge was very relaxing. I learned a lot about how to consult God and understand his path for me."
- Avery

"Recharge was a great experience because I was able to get to know the youth from Northside Drive.  I also enjoyed sitting in on the different rotations offered, and listening to what each had to say.  I had a lot of fun!"
- Courtney

"Mah (my) favorite part of ReCharge was the free time.  It gave me a chance to just reflect on my feelings and thoughts, and I got to go canoeing!"
- Garrett

"I was a visitor to NDBC but everyone made me feel so welcome.  It was a great experience . . ."
- Nina P.

If you want to know more about ReCharge, the youth will certainly be happy to share all about their experience!

Renee Gamache, Administrative Assistant
IN THE NDBC SPOT LIGHT

Former NDBC Sunday School teacher and member, John Hayes, has written a book entitled If You Don't Like the Possum, Enjoy the Sweet Potatoes: Some Principles for Travel along the Road of Life.  John will be signing the book at the Annie L. Awbrey Public Library in Roanoke, Alabama  on Sunday, November 15 at 3PM, EST. The address is 736 College Street, Roanoke. All are invited to attend.

Here is what Bill Moyers had to say about the book: "There's more wisdom in these pages than in an airlift or convoy of Chinese fortune cookies. John's take on late-night comedians and the news is alone worth the modest price he's charging for opening our eyes and ears to some good 'ol truths from the school of hard knocks. I just wish he'd written this sooner; it might have saved my life."

For more comments about the book by Barbara Brown Taylor, Fred Craddock and others,  go to http://wipfandstock.com."
