A TRIBUTE TO MY GRANDMA WANDA

By Aaron Betschel

In January 2010' I took my first trip to Tanzania, Africa. However, this story isn't about the life changing trip that I took, but how it affected those around me. I needed to raise money to pay for the trip. Fortunately I have a huge family and collected most of my funds from them. The experiences and stories I brought back with me impacted the people who helped send me. In fact, it did something amazing to one person in particular. After sharing story after story my Grandma Wanda felt like she could do more than just support me, but make a difference globally. She had this awesome idea. Before I tell you her idea, I have to tell you that she has a gift. She is creative and talented. For years she had been doing crafts and had been going to craft fairs selling her goods to those that were interested. This side job/ hobby faded away as she changed her occupation and moved on with her time. She had a great craft room upstairs in her house that wasn't being used like it used to be. Her closets were full of fabrics, pins, needles, and many other crafty supplies. They just sat there waiting to be used.

When I got back from Africa, and shared my stories with her, her brain began to work on something I couldn't have imagined. She came up to me one day and asked me if she could make me some backpacks to sell to raise money for my future trips. A few months later she came to me with a box. This box had 100 drawstring backpacks in it. I wasn't sure how these would sell here, but mentioned to her that I thought we could send them to the places that FFCC goes to help those in need. She loved the idea. A couple weeks later she called me and said she had 100 more...was she serious? She was spending all of her free time sewing, cutting, and measuring. She loved it. In fact, she started to make purses too. Then she made shoulder bags...then came along bean bags. She was using all of her supplies on people she was never going to meet or see. This just blew me away because I knew the people getting these were going to be so thankful and use them for everything. My grandma will never travel to see what she has done, but we have. In fact, to date she has put together close to 500 backpacks, 100 purses/shoulder bags and 200 bean bags.

The last time I went to Africa I brought her back some fabric from one of the villages, which she was thrilled to get. So...she made more. Every time I see her, she has a new box of items for me. You want to talk about a heart of gold. This lady is remarkable! She doesn't realize how many little kids, and adults on the other side of the world are wearing and using her gift. She has made a huge impact on me, and many others. Her selflessness will be shown for years and years, even after she is gone. God Bless my Grandma Wanda, and God Bless those of you that have a talent that could possibly change someone's life. She never thought it would get to this, but it just took one great person with a simple idea...what's yours?

AZUSA PACIFIC STUDENTS SHARE THEIR TANZANIAN EXPERIENCE

Azusa Pacific University (located 16 miles east of Pasadena) has been partnering with FFCC for the past few years. They have sent students to San Diego to participate in our food packaging events and have even done some packaging there at Azusa. In addition to packaging meals, the past two summers APU has sent teams of students to Tanzania Africa to join FFCC with our different projects there.

This last summer, APU had the unique opportunity to link up with the Tanzania Institute of Accountancy (TIA). This Tanzanian University operates under the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. The school specializes in the areas of accounting, procurement, logistics management, human resources management & other related business disciplines. The team of APU students spent five days on the TIA campus interacting with the students sharing their common & different experiences as college students. The Azusa students also took several TIA students out to the village of Nkungi where FFCC & APU are working to install water filters. For the period of a week, the students lived together, worked together and grew in their friendship with each other.

As a result of this opportunity, the President of TIA, Mr. Emmanuel Kingu, has written a letter to Azusa Pacific University acknowledging the beginning of an official relationship between APU & TIA for the purpose of establishing academic ties between the two schools. TIA is proposing an exchange program where students from both sides would get an opportunity to practice their specialized knowledge in a different environment and encounter new challenges. TIA has also invited APU graduates to come and teach for a period of time so as to gain experience and to help TIA as they have a shortage of teachers.

Congratulations, Azusa Pacific University for making such an impact. If you would like more information about how your college campus might partner with FFCC or establish a relationship like that of APU & TIA, contact Phil Harris at philffcc@san.rr.com.

mom with kids   YOU CAN HELP!

One of our community members is struggling.  She is a single Mom who left an abusive marriage to provide a more peaceful and stable home for her two young boys.  She is in desperate need of odd jobs to make her September rent.  She has volunteered for FFCC now for over two years, helping other families that need food assistance.  Debbie doesn't have transportation or a driver's license, but she could clean house, and previously has been a caregiver for a paraplegic man and before that for the mentally ill.  She is a great inspiration who is down on her luck.   If you can help Debbie or hire her for part time work while her boys are in school Monday thru Friday from 8:30am to 3pm, please contact Becky at bpalenske@san.rr.com.
