Dear FFCC Team Member,
Miracles continue to be revealed because of your generosity! This week, we are sending another volunteer team off to Haiti! Thank you for keeping them in your thoughts and prayers. We also want to share some updates regarding FFCC's local community outreach through the Backyard Produce and Garden Projects and make you aware of opportunities to provide some much needed storage space, as well as participate in an amazing concert that will benefit Tsunami victims from Japan.
Thank you for continuing to run with us!

Bon Voyage FFCC Haiti Team #8!
The 8th FFCC Haiti team is packed and ready to go! They are loaded with packages of food, water filters, soccer balls, and a can of bug spray or two.
They will arrive in Port au Prince on Saturday, August 13th and travel to the rural community of Gressier. There, the team will continue the work of previous FFCC teams as they put the final touches on the administration building of the Shepherd House Orphanage. This orphanage, when complete, will provide a loving home for 200 orphaned children and a school for the orphans and another 200 children in the community.
Our team of ten (3 high school seniors, 2 college students, and 5 in the "over-forty" category) will be loving on the people of Haiti through food distribution; installation of filters that will deliver clean drinking water; friendly soccer games & lots of hugs! Phil has meetings scheduled with the new government so as to gain an understanding of their strategy to move the country forward and to better clarify how FFCC can continue to provide necessary help and support. We wish them a safe journey and great success with all their endeavors!

Backyard Produce & Community Garden Projects Help Feed Our Neighbors
FFCC has been partnering on two wonderful projects that help us to share fresh picked produce with local families in need. The Backyard Produce Project (which includes a group of volunteers that pick produce from homes across the community) is one such project. The Community Garden Project, located in Poway, is the other closely connected partner initiative.
Both projects are very successful because of dedicated volunteers. The donation of FREE produce given to FFCC families in July was 2,875 lbs! The accumulated total since the start has been an amazing 29,250 lbs!
One of the ways that 120 local families benefit from the harvest is at monthly food distributions coordinated by a group called Community Care. These events take place once a month in Poway and once a month in Rancho Penasquitos.
For those families that cannot attend, there is a team that reaches out to them in their homes. As an example, one low-income apartment complex in Rancho PQ - where we assist about 55 families - has a free monthly "Farmer's Market". One recipient who lives in the complex has become the volunteer organizer of this Market. She sets up all the donated produce by the swimming pool, and then asks some of the children to go knocking on doors to invite residents to shop. While serving her own neighbors, she says that it is fun to see how each shopper is excited as they make their selections.
Click here to watch a recent news spot on these initiatives or visit the Project's website. If you would like to become a volunteer for any of these projects and share in the good time of gardening, picking, packing, and/or distributing vegetables and fruit, please contact Becky at bpalenske@san.rr.com.

Storage Space ... Can You Help?
Each week, FFCC assists hundreds of local families in need to alleviate food emergencies. We also partner with a few monthly food distributions that help local families in need in throughout Rancho Penasquitos, Poway, and Rancho Bernardo neighborhoods. In order to accomplish this outreach, we have a serious need for storage space of non-perishable canned and dry foods. This space needs to also be where we can work 2-3 times monthly with a small group of volunteers to get food ready to go out. Our desire is for a donated space that is approximately 300 square feet and is located in this same area where we are helping families. Traditionally, we've held some large food drives each fall and we'd like to find a way to continue to do this by acquiring a room by October 2011 to house all the donations. If you can help, please contact Becky Palenske at 858-538-2492 or bpalenske@san.rr.com. Thank you in advance for considering how you can help FFCC serve your neighbors! |
