Dear FFCC Team Member,

Thanks to your support, FFCC continues to make an incredible impact in this nation and across the globe!  Locally, we remain focused on aiding children and families in need, as well as our homeless community.  Globally, the placement of water filters and the provision of packaged meals is literally saving lives every day.

Here's a snapshot view of some accomplishments that have been made possible because of the time, money, and compassion that each of you have shared.

Hadzabe medical clinic TZ June 2011
Hadzabe Medical Clinic Update

On this past trip to Tanzania, Africa, the Azusa Pacific University/FFCC team, which was there for two months, worked on building a medical clinic for the Hadzabe people. This clinic will provide a location for the Hadzabe people and the other people in the region to come and receive medical care.  This effort furthers the cause to help the Hadzabe people (who are traditionally a nomadic tribe) stay in an area where they can farm and have a more sustainable source of food. This will allow them to be a healthy people again.

Over the time that we worked with the people, we built stronger relationships with the workers and the tribe. We helped out with a lot of the painting and delivered the sand, gravel and brick to the clinic. We worked there for several weeks and it was amazing to see the clinic get built and finished, knowing the countless lives that it is going to save.

The Tanzania government is fully supportive of the work being done with the Hadzabe people, so we look forward to the opportunity to work more closely with these officials in the future to ensure that the nutrition and medical needs of the people are met.

Karla Stahley TZ June 2011

Karla Stahley, RN, BSN calls
US medical professionals to take notice

My name is Karla Stahley and I am a registered nurse at Scripps Mercy Hospital. I have been in the health care profession for about 20 years and functioning as a nurse for 5 of those years.  I recently took a trip [with FFCC] to Tanzania in a humanitarian effort to help the people in this country.  I wanted to be able to serve a community that was in desperate need and this country definitely qualifies.

While there I had the opportunity to tour the local hospital in Singida, and several "community clinics" out in the villages. The conditions of care in this country are deplorable. I would compare them to the 19th century. They have an unbelievable nursing shortage as well as no money to upgrade or maintain a hospital as it should be. The things that I observed were very fixable with time and thought and training and also money and supplies.

While I was in this hospital I recognized that there was no housecleaning staff, the nurses were about 12:1 ratio, the x-ray machine had been down for about 7 months, and finally they were readying to do an exploratory laporotomy on a patient without diagnostics being done. This facility was antiquated at best.

There is a new obstetrics hospital is being built and it is quite nice as far as the standards in this country. They have a building but are out of resources to furnish and begin treating. I would challenge anyone in the health care profession to take this trip and begin to formulate ways to educate the healthcare profession in Tanzania on how to better run their facilities and train in aseptic technique and maintenance.

Your life will change after a short visit to these wonderfully grateful people and you will want to be a change agent and advocate for them.
