Dear FFCC Team Member,
 Team June 2011 at church

FFCC had two teams (Trips #9 and #10) in Tanzania this summer.  Eight students from Azusa Pacific University (APU) spent 2 months working throughout central Tanzania. Another 15 adults and students joined up with the APU team for 2 weeks and accomplished some amazing things, while deepening our relationships in Singida Town, the village of Nkungi and with the Hadzabe Tribe.

Both teams were outstanding and represented FFCC and San Diego with great honor and distinction.  The teams accomplished the following:

  • Completion & grand opening of the Children's Playground & Market store front
  • Completion of the Medical Clinic and ribbon cutting for the Hadzabe Tribe
  • Made 100s of blocks for the construction of a teachers house at Nkungi's Primary School
  • Mixed and poured cement for the construction of an additional classroom at the Asanja Primary School
  • Painted and made building repairs at the Children's Center in Singida
  • Installed water filters in the village of Nkungi
  • Installed playground equipment at the Children's Center
  • Established a water filter installation program in the village of Nkungi that will provide a water filter in each home, i.e., 1,124 over this next year.  As part of our Impact H2O initiative, this project will eliminate water borne bacteria from this village and bring new life, hope, and health to thousands.

Thank you FFCC family for all your prayers and support as we continue to take the blessings from our community and share them around the world.  If you would like more information about our work in Tanzania or if you would like to travel with us in 2012, please email Tina Socha at tina.socha@san.rr.com

Thanks,

Phil Harris

Clarice Henry
Traveler Spotlight:
Clarice Henry's First Tanzanian Adventure

I am so happy that I was able to be a part of the team to Tanzania this summer.  Not only was I able to expand my view on the Tanzanian culture, but I got to experience it. The trip was an overall amazing experience. I got to meet and interact with the people of the nation while also growing a second family within the team.  One of things that I looked forward to was venturing out of Naomi's home each day in Nkungi to play with the children of the village waiting outside. They were so happy to see us, to play with us, and to be loved just a little more. They will always hold a special place in my heart next to the place for Tanzania.

I feel I had a little bit different of an experience since I am half-black. I had multiple occasions that people would ask me if I was Tanzanian. The best was on the 4th day in Tanzania. We were at the Catholic Center in Singida. Before breakfast, a man working there came up to me. He pointed at me and said "African, African." I tried to tell him that I was American. When he replied with the same "African, African," I walked away. After breakfast, he approached me again. This time Katie Maher and Philip Cowart (fellow FFCC travelers) were nearby. The man again pointed at me and said "African."

Philip replied "mzungu" meaning "white person" in Swahili. The man wildly disagreed. Katie took her turn to explain that my mother was "mzungu" and my father Caribbean. This sparked something in the man's mind. He pointed at me and plainly said "Obama." Definitely something I will never forget!

Nkungi Water Project - Tina demo
Impact H2O: Nkungi Water Project

Typhoid, salmonella, parasites & dysentery are the common responses to the question, "What are the health issues that your family struggles with?"  Malaria & the flu were the only other illnesses mentioned that weren't related to bacteria contaminated water.

These responses from families in Nkungi, a village in the bush of Tanzania, along with a positive reading for bacteria at one of their wells are what is driving FFCC to take on the massive project of supplying every home in the village, all 1,124 homes, with our micron water filters by July 2012. These filters will remove the bacteria and provide safe, clean water for this village.

This project has several components and we are working with the Health Officers & Village Leaders to establish a program that will require an investment of both time and resources from the village so that this program can be self sustaining.

Our website will soon provide more details about this project. If you are interested in joining us in this endeavor by sponsoring a home with a filter ($75), you can contact Pam Long @

School Supplies for Students in Need

Although I am sure that the farthest thing from our children's minds right now is going back to school, the retailers are sending out the advertisements with their latest bargains on school supplies.

Come August there will be families in our community that will struggle to fill that list of needed school supplies.  So if you are out taking advantage of some of these deals, grab an extra box of colored pencils or a package of paper or whatever the items on your students list might be and drop them by Dream Dinners (12218 Poway Road, Suite #100, Poway, 92064) and we'll make sure they get to those who need them.

Bolton Lum garden angel
With Great Thanks!

The wonderfully supportive group of FFCC volunteers made another lasting impact in our local community.  Through diligent work and generous donations we were able to partner with individuals, businesses, Boy Scouts, schools, and a church to brighten the lives of the Bolton Lum family. Our work on the garden, sliding glass door replacement, wheelchair ramp and bedroom update has all been greatly appreciated by the family.  See photos of the transformation.

Sadly, Margaret Bolton Lum passed away June 28th from a brain tumor, may she rest in peace. Her husband Chris Lum, and her children Will, Alex and Donald have all also benefited from the many FFCC hands and hearts coming together to help with improvements in their home.  Click here to see the list of everyone we'd like to thank.  If you'd like to be involved in our next project to benefit local families, please contact Becky at bpalenske@san.rr.com.
