Sit Means Sit Hawaii Newsletter
September 2009
 Dear Dog Lovers, ,

Welcome to our SIt Means Sit Hawaii Newsletter.

A special announcement! We have listened to your feedback and enhanced our programs. Many of you felt that you did not want to burden us with your questions once your program was complete. We have resolved that and now added lifetime phone consulting to all of our programs. Furthermore, as a great suggestion from the Balog family on the West side of Maui and echoed by many others around the state, we are including an added benefit of an "annual review lesson" to most all of our packages. If you have already taken a program from us in the past, don't worry, you are all "grand fathered in" and can expect a call on your one year anniversary to book your review lesson.

Like each of you, we love our dogs and only want the best for them.
With that in mind, our mission is to continually provide you with educational reminders in short articles and video form. We hope you enjoy the content.

Press the button!

Aloha,

Scott

LEARNING TO APPROACH A DOG

Celia & Cienna GolfcartHi! My name is Celia and I am 8 years old. I am the daughter of Sit Means Sit's - Vice President of Research & Development and I am glad I live in Maui, Hawaii. Anyway, today I am going to teach you how to approach a dog if you are 15 and under or basically any age. Okay, so first say I was at the mall or the park and I saw the cutest dog in the whole world! Would I go up and stick my face in it? No, first I would ask the owner, "may I please pet your dog?" and if they say, "yeah sure". Do not stick your face in the dog's face, even if it looks so cute and nice, the dog can still get a little nervous and might have a good chance of nipping you. If I was approaching a bigger dog I would still approach it the same way but just a little different. (this is an example of the right way) - I would have already approached the dog, so I would stand like a tree and put my fist out for the dog to sniff me and after the dog sniffs me I would pet it under the dogs chest and make sure I do not have eye contact (I do not know why). That is how to approach a dog bigger or small the right way. See the video example, above.  Click here to see video

HEEL TO FRONT LEARNING PROGRESSIONS
We all enjoy off leash fun with our dogs and sometimes it's exciting to add a little spice to even the most basic skills. This clip demonstrates how we are always looking for creative ways to help our dogs learn a new skill. A pillar for this principle, is found in using our resources in creating boundaries, to ensure the highest probability of a successful outcome, as quickly as possible. Here you will see how we use cargo boxes and the tops, to help ensure a defined area is set to perform the skills of a "Heel" and "Front."  Naturally we begin with a leash as a simple guide and we quickly remove the leash and make the progressions seen here in the video. Our Sit Means Sit teaching language is clearly demonstrated in this clip. As the old saying goes "it's not the plane, it's the pilot" The same holds true with Sit Means Sit, and that is why we teach you how to pursue the potential of your dog with our personalized, one on one training classes.  Click here to see video

SIT MEANS SIT RECOMMENDS:
STEADFAST CANINE is more than a vitamin/mineral product, a joint health product, or a bone health product; it is a complete Structural Support System designed to support and maintain normal health, performance, and longevity of ALL components of your dog's framework - including joints, bones, and other connective tissues. Each of these components may be impacted over time due to athletic performance, environmental conditions and aging. While many canine health products may be useful in addressing one component of your dog's framework, STEADFAST CANINE takes a unique and multi-faceted approach in supporting your dog's entire structural system. Trainer's Quick Tip:

One of the most enjoyable benefits of a well trained dog is the freedom of being off leash. That freedom comes initially from placing structure in the dogs life, such that he or she understands boundaries of both area and acceptable manners with other dogs and people. All of our programs are based around the place command. The place command teaches the dog how to control and contain their energy without being confined by a fence or restrained by a leash. Therefore, it is vital for the continuation of your success, to always go back to basics and reinforce the place command exercises. The exercises to reinforce are "come place," "turn," "over place" and "back place." Reinforcing the place command keeps the dog sharp so they can control their energy under distractions, at a distance
and for periods of time.

Sandy Carr'sThese little ones are recent grads of Sit Means Sit Hawaii. This photo was captured just a few moments ago and the quote from their "Mom", Sandy was,"I was getting ready to go out the front door and looked back, and there were these 4 amazing babies, all in "place" without me even giving the command (Niko was sleeping). I almost fainted. I happened to have my camera in my purse, so got this pic. This has never happened before, usually I'm squeezing out the door trying to push them back so they don't run out. They really do want to please Mommy! Love it."
