New Additions:  Please join us in welcoming Katie Schmalz, OTR/L, MSOT to our therapy team.  Her bio will be posted on our website shortly but here is a sneak peek for those of you who can't wait!

Katie received her B.S. in psychology from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY and she earned her M.S. in Occupational therapy from Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA.  In college, Katie volunteered with the Big Brother/Big Sister program and at a home for at risk youth boys. Prior to attending graduate school, Katie worked as an aide in an elementary school special day class for 6 years.  Katie began to hone her skills as a pediatric OT, while attending Samuel Merritt University, by participating in the student run pediatric clinic, and later by working with California Children Services and with the West Contra Costa Unified School District.  Katie has experience working with children with various diagnoses including but not limited to autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder, dysgraphia, Fragile X syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Prader Willi Syndrome, ADHD and Down Syndrome.  Katie has a strong passion for working with children and she enjoys using creativity to develop fun and exciting ways to facilitate achievement of goals.

Expansion:

Our clinic expansion is finished and we have a new larger motor room that will be great for working on your child's skills as well as for creating groups over the next year (please stay posted for new programming to be offered).  Please feel free to come by and check it out!

Lifting Lives
For those of you who don't know, I love country music so imagine my delight when I saw this performance at the ACM country awards and saw the program that they provide.  If you get a chance watch this you tube video and listen to the words I think they are beautifully written and sung.  We are donating to Lifting Lives this month and we hope to hear more amazing work from them.
Out and About
KEEN SF
Adding in another one of my interests, triathlons, I recently found an organization that I had not been aware of.  As a member of the Golden Gate Triathlon Club I learned that they donated part of their proceeds to KEEN in San Francisco, an organization that works with children and young adults with developmental disabilities and does sports and athletics with them.  Its a nationwide organization so look for the one closest to you.  I know in San Francisco they do swimming regularly.  Please check them out!
Greetings!

Hopefully we have caught you before you head out of town or on some fun adventures for the holiday weekend. Read below for some sun and water safety tips which may come in handy this weekend as well as great activities for kids around the bay area. Enjoy!

Sun and Water Safety: AAP Recommendations
water safety

Summer is just around the corner and we have been reading up on sun and water safety recommendations made by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to share with you. For babies 6 months of age of under, they recommend avoiding sun exposure by staying in the shade and wearing lightweight long sleeve shirts and long pants.  For areas that cannot be covered, apply a small amount of sunscreen with at least SPF 15.  If a baby this age should get sunburned, the AAP recommends apply cold compresses to the affected area.

For all other children, again the recommendation for the best line of defense is to limit sun exposure especially during peak hours of the day, which are between 10am - 4pm.  When children are in the sun, AAP recommends applying a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and reapplying at least every 2 hours and right after swimming or sweating.  Keep in mind that sunscreen is just as necessary on cloudy days and that sand and water reflect UV rays and therefore, children may be at an increased risk in those areas.

In addition to being out in the sun more, your family will probably do some swimming this summer.  The AAP has some great recommendations for pool and water safety.  First, never leave any child, even those who have completed swimming lessons, unattended near a pool or body of water.  If you have a pool or are near water frequently with your children it is a good idea to know CPR so you are prepared in an emergency.  AAP recommends touch supervision, meaning that you are no more than an arm's length away from children younger than 5 years old.  If you have a pool in your backyard, it is recommended that the pool be completely fenced off from the rest of the yard and that the gate latches are above your children's reach. A pool alarm is also a good idea. Another recommendation is to not use air filled swimming aids or "floaties" as a substitue for approved life vests when necessary.

Motor Smart Toys: Outdoor Style!
stomp rocket
Stomp rocket:  The stomp rocket (pictured right) is a great toy to get your kid moving! It is lightweight, inexpensive and easy to transport so you can bring it to the park or the beach.  We like how learning how to lift their foot and push down on the launch pad works on single leg balance for new standers and walkers.  However, it can be beneficial for older kids as well.  It can be a great way to reinforce jumping and hopping as you can encourage them to jump or hop up onto the rocket pad.  This challenges strength, coordination, and motor planning.  Also, if your child can step on the pad easily but has difficulty standing on one leg longer you can encourage them to lift one foot and hold it up, tell them they have to wait until you count to 5,7, or even 10 seconds before they stomp down on the pad.  This can add some motivation to practicing balance. If you are not working on a certain skill but just want some entertainment for your child, this is a great option as well.  Stomping, jumping, and chasing after the rocket will keep them occupied and get out lot's of energy! The stomp rocket can be found at most toy stores.

Bikes and trikes: As always, bicycles and tricycles are a great way to work on  muscle strength, motor planning, and balance.  This is also a great way to encourage cardiovascular exercise in young children and a way to get the whole family involved in exercise.  For specific tips on how to encourage your child to ride a tricycle or two-wheeler, contact us, as it can be individual to each child and their needs.

Stepping Stones: "Stepping stones" or "River Stones" (pictured below) are a great way to work on balance, reciprocal leg movement and motor planning.  Since they are individual, your child can be creative with arranging them into different patterns and then trying to walk on them.  For toddlers and younger kids, you can start with the smallest ones and simply have them attempt to step onto and off of one or two. As they gain more balance skills you can arrange the stones into a line or circle and have them step across placing one foot on each stone.  For an additional challenge, you can place the stones further apart so they have to use larger steps to get to the next stone.  You can use creativity and imagination for motivation.  The texture on these also provides for a great sensory tool.  On a nice day, these are great to place out in an open, grassy area.  That way you can let your child experiment with their balance while supervised but without having to worry too much about their safety if they fall.  You can find these on amazon by clicking here.

Sidewalk chalk: Sidewalk chalk can be a simple, inexpensive way to work on fine motor and writing skills outdoors on a nice day.  This can also promote creativity.  In addition, you can assist your child in drawing a hopscotch course in the driveway or sidewalk that they can use for jumping and hopping practice. It can be found in most drug stores and toy stores.

Thank you for reading this month! Enjoy the holiday weekend and we'll see you next month!
