2008 has brought about a lot of growth for Starfish Therapies.  We added Angel Hsieh, PTA, Katie Callicotte, DPT and Kristin Hatten, DPT to our staff.  We also purchased Able Body Pediatrics practice which provided us with clinic space in San Mateo.  The address is 1650 S. Amphlett Blvd, Suite 108, San Mateo, CA 94402.  Please to call and set up a time when you can come and visit.  Starfish Therapies became a Non-Public Agency (NPA) allowing us to contract within school systems.  We also became contracted with Blue Shield and are in the process of contracting with other insurance companies.  Please refer to www.starfishtherapies.com for more details on the above information!

Homemade Holiday Fun
Looking for fun things to do with your child this time of year?  How about homemade play dough!  The recipe is extremely easy and edible for those who have kids that can't resist putting things in their mouth.
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/3 cup water
You may need to adjust the flour and water to get the perfect consistency.  For color, use food coloring, Kool-Aid, or Jello.  To get into the holiday spirit you can use cookie cutters to create fun shapes and turn them into ornaments or other holiday decorations.

Understanding Terminology
medicalI like to think of MUSCLE TONE in terms of a light bulb.  The light bulb is your muscle and the electricity flowing to it is your nerves that tell the muscle what to do.  Now picture a light switch that has a dimmer attached.  When you turn the dimmer down low, the light isn't as bright because there is less electricity flowing into the bulb, this would represent HYPOTONIA.  The muscles appear floppy at rest because there is less input from the nerves flowing to the muscles.  When you turn the dimmer up to its highest setting the light is almost too bright because there is more electricity flowing into the bulb, this would represent HYPERTONIA.  The muscle appear stiff at rest  because there is more input from the nerves flowing to the muscles.  The answer to both of theses situations is to strengthen the muscles. For more information on medical terms/conditions:  http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus.html

Thank you for your interest in Starfish Therapies.  Our hope is that you find this newsletter helpful and handy for your child's growing years.  Please contact us with requests for information or any questions you would like answered.  Once again we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.

Happy Holidays,
