Seven  Myths About Cholesterol
cholesterol chart
Most people today think they know what cholesterol is, where it comes from, and what it does.  If you follow the popular media or most diet books, cholesterol is a deadly poison that comes from food which clogs arteries and causes heart attacks.  Like most things having to do with the human body, however, the role of cholesterol is much more complicated than this simple picture suggests.  In fact, all these assumptions are so oversimplified that they are flat-out wrong.

Greetings,

February is National Heart Health Month.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 8 million Americans have some form of cardiovascular disease. It is the number one killer of Americans; killing more people than the next five leading causes combined, including cancer. For many people the first sign that they have cardiovascular disease is a heart attack and 1 out of every 4 first time heart attacks are fatal.

In the US, we will spend over $500 billion treating cardiovascular disease in 2010.  For individuals diagnosed with CVD, their average annual medical costs approach $6000.  These are staggering numbers considering that the Institute of Medicine estimates that 90% of cardiovascular disease is preventable with lifestyle modifications.

True prevention goes beyond just checking cholesterol numbers.  Be sure your heart is functioning at an optimal level.  Call Alternity Healthcare to schedule an in-depth cardiovascular assessment today.

Women and Heart Disease

While many women, and far too many doctors, apparently still do not know it, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one killer of women; and has been since 1984. Out of the one million individuals that die from heart disease each year in the U.S., more than half are women.  Women disproportionately fear dying from breast cancer compared to heart disease, but cardiovascular disease kills nearly ten times as many women each year as breast cancer .  Traditional Framingham Risk Scores may grossly underestimate the cardiovascular risk among women.
