Why A Flag Bill?
US flag

Senator Roger Kahn recently offered his thoughts on a bill passed by the Michigan Legislature last year, providing for more flags flown by the state to be made in America.  The bill was signed into law by Governor Snyder on Flag Day.

Late last year a bill I introduced was approved by the Senate and sent to the House. Known as the "American-Made American Flag Bill," is on the governor's desk as of this writing. What is this bill about and why is it important?  First, about 20 percent of flags sold in America come from overseas, mostly from China. Our flag is flown in front of public buildings, drapes caskets at military funerals and is placed on graves. You would think it would be automatic that flags given to grieving families or placed on the graves or caskets of our fallen servicemen and women would be American-made out of respect for those who gave this country their last full measure of devotion. I think it is insulting to give a grieving mother a flag with a tag saying, "Made in China." You would think that it would be automatic that our elected officials would insist that government buildings respect our people by flying American-made flags from all American governmental buildings. Unfortunately that is not the case. The state government is unsure where its divisions get their flags and has no policy on this issue. Cities, villages, townships and counties have no policy on this issue either. In fact, the representative of one of the above entities would not support my original bill, which included all levels of governance in our state. Why? It was viewed as an "unfunded mandate." That is why the current bill only applies to state buildings, and next year I will continue to fight to ensure the policy extends to all government buildings in our great state.

The Message From Wisconsin To Michigan

MIGOP Chair Bobby Schostak

In early June, Wisconsin voters affirmed that their Governor, Scott Walker, was on the right track regarding government employee unions.  Michigan Republican Party Chairman Bobby Schostak issued the following statement in response.

"The real winners tonight are all of Wisconsin's hard working tax payers. I want to congratulate the citizens of Wisconsin for choosing Governor Scott Walker and putting the interests of hard working middle class families ahead of the radical agenda pursued by liberal interest groups and union bosses. The message from Wisconsin is clear: Hard working tax payers are fed-up with the status quo and hungry for the common-sense bold-changes offered by Republicans.

This is a great day for all Americans who stood squarely with Wisconsin Republicans, Tea Party organizations, and all conservatives in defending our liberty and freedom, and an especially bad night for Barack Obama.  I especially want to thank Michigan Republican Co-Chair Sharon Wise for leading a group of Michigan activists to Wisconsin and thank the countless volunteers in Michigan who stood with Governor Scott Walker by participating in the phone-from-home program.

Michigan is on the cusp of a dramatic turnaround and I look forward to turning our focus entirely toward defending Michigan's comeback against Democrats and special interests who hope to stall the progress made by Governor Rick Snyder and the Republican-led House and Senate."

The Republican mission seeks to maintain a strong defense, encourage individual achievement and liberty through the free enterprise system, and strengthen families.  If you would like to help us move the area and the country towards these goals, please consider donating to the Saginaw County Republican Committee.  Every donation, no matter how large or small, will help ensure that we can find and elect people to work for those goals.  You can do so by mail to PO BOX 6653, Saginaw, MI  48608 or on the web at www.saginawcountygop.com.
