Campaign Training For Women
Ready To Run logo
Grand Valley State University Women's Center will hold "Ready to Run Michigan", a training event intended for women in politics. The seminar takes place on Saturday, April 21st, on the university campus in Allendale.

Michigan ranks 36th in the nation when it comes to women in elected office, with women making up only 20.9% of the current legislature.  When you consider research from the University of Michigan showing that diverse groups of people are more productive and come to better solutions than homogeneous groups, the lack of women in our state, county, and municipal offices may mean we are missing an opportunity for healthier public debates and stronger public policies.

As a local political leader, you help determine whether Michigan will remain near the bottom of diverse representation or not.  Please look into your community and invite up-and-coming women leaders to attend Ready to Run Michigan!  You may learn more about Ready to Run Michigan online.  If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Jo Ann Wassenaar at wassenaj@gvsu.edu or 616-331-2748.

Detroit Avoids Financial Manager Through Pact With Governor Snyder

Reinvent Michigan

Governor Rick Snyder gave an optimistic view of Detroit's future under the new financial agreement between the city and the state, even though the deal does not provide direct financial assistance from the state.  Under the deal, the city gets state approval to sell a $137 million bond package, which should help the city stay solvent until the fiscal year ends in June, 2012. The consent agreement also establishes strict budget and operational reforms to stabilize Detroit's finances.

The Detroit City Council agreed to the plan in a narrow 5-4 vote earlier this month, after Mayor Bing, state Treasury officials and the governor pushed its passage. The consent agreement gives the state oversight of Detroit's finances and establishes a nine-member financial advisory board, chief financial officer, and project management director with control over the city's purse.

The Governor said the agreement was the only way to get the city back on track, short of appointing an emergency manager. The agreement includes an ambitious reform plan to restructure city services and collective bargaining agreements. It also requires the city to balance its budget or face a full state takeover.  Detroit has already placed its bus system under private management and is looking to do the same with the lighting department and the Department of Human Services.

The Republican mission seeks to maintain a strong defense, encourage individual achievement and liberty through the free enterprise system, and strengthen families.  If you would like to help us move the area and the country towards these goals, please consider donating to the Saginaw County Republican Committee.  Every donation, no matter how large or small, will help ensure that we can find and elect people to work for those goals.  You can do so by mail to PO BOX 6653, Saginaw, MI  48608 or on the web at www.saginawcountygop.com.
