University of Michigan Regent Race News
|

Dr. Rob Steele, candidate for University of Michigan Regent, spoke at last Wednesday's Saginaw County Republican Executive Committee meeting. Rob has a lot of passion for the U of M and would be a great regent. Besides keeping tuition low, he feels American students should have priority over foreign students.
There are two other candidates for Regent. Dan Horning, a former Regent, is also running to return to the post. Ron Weiser, an Ann Arbor businessman is the third candidate. A candidate to be placed on the November ballot will be chosen at this year's Michigan Republican state convention to.

Congress 5th District Race Gets Crowded
|

A third contender for the seat being vacated by Dale Kildee has announced his intentions. Michael DeMaet of Saginaw will hold a fundraiser and petition drive kick-off on Wednesday, March 21st at the Temple Theatre Ballroom, 203 N. Washington Av, Saginaw. The event will be from 6:00-10:00pm. You can RSVP to either Charlotte or Laurie DeMaet at 989-754-7502. Due to the redistricting from the 2010 Census, the 5th District now covers the following townships: Blumfield Township, Bridgeport Township, Buena Vista Township, Carrollton Township, Spaulding Township, City of Saginaw, City of Zilwaukee, and most of Saginaw Township. This is NEW and if you live in Saginaw Township, please pay close attention to the race for the 5th District seat. Only precincts 13, 14, 15, and 16 of Saginaw Township still remain in the 4th District, currently represented by Congressman Dave Camp. At this time, we have not been able to ascertain whether precinct 12 will be split, but an early map indicates that the western 1/3 MAY remain in the 4th District.
Michael DeMaet joins Jim Slezak of Genesee County and Tom Wassa of Tuscola County, who previously announced for the seat.

Why Winning The US Senate Is Important
|
Republican Senator Jim DeMint believes that as important as winning the Presidency is, winning the US Senate is even more important. "It's the Senate, stupid.", a play on President Clinton's campaign slogan from 1992, has become his slogan and here's why. - Without a conservative Senate, we won't repeal Obamacare.
- Without a conservative Senate, we won't balance the budget.
- Without a conservative Senate, we won't secure our borders.
- Without a conservative Senate, we won't stop the bailouts.
- And without a conservative Senate, we won't enact the pro-growth policies needed to get America back to work.
Not only do the Democrats currently control the Senate but the rules of the Senate make it extremely powerful. If conservatives control the Senate, we not only can pass the reforms needed to undo Obama's mess, but we can also stop even more bad policies from being adopted. The simple fact of the matter is this: a good president without a conservative Senate is a waste of a good president. A president can campaign on great policies, but he doesn't write the bills. As long as liberals are in charge of writing legislation, it will be difficult for a Republican president to sign the right bills into law. Does anyone think Harry Reid will ever send a bill to the President's desk to repeal ObamaCare? The answer is no and that's why Senator DeMint is entirely focused on packing the Senate with strong conservatives who will one day make that a reality. There are 23 Democrat Senate seats up this cycle, and Republicans stand a strong chance of taking the Senate back. But it's not enough to just have a majority. We must have new senators who deeply believe in the principles of freedom and are willing to fight for them each day. He is challenging us all to keep our focus on winning a conservative majority in the US Senate. That's why he founded the Senate Conservatives Fund, a political action committee that aims to help elect rock-solid conservative leaders to the US Senate. While the group has not yet endorsed a candidate in Michigan, they have endorsed in Ohio, Texas, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. In Michigan, we have candidates running for a seat. Please visit their websites and learn more about them, to discover which share a strong belief in the principles of freedom that make America great and they understand the critical role the U.S. Constitution plays in preserving those principles. Let's make sure we have the best Senator for Michigan, to help the next Republican President take back our freedoms.
