More State Police For Saginaw
|

A key component to Michigan's reinvention is public safety. Last week, Governor Rick Snyder delivered a special message about public safety and his plans to combat the crime rate in Michigan cities. The Governor's plan intends to create safer communities which will encourage more economic development opportunities and lead to a stronger more vibrant state economy. The plan especially targets Detroit, Flint, Saginaw and Pontiac, which have been noted as some of the country's most dangerous cities.
The Governor's multi-pronged approach intends to combat violent crime, at-risk youth, and repeat offenders. It includes:
- Two trooper schools that will graduate 180 new troopers to assist the "Secure Cities Partnership",
- Embedding Department of Corrections parole officers in Detroit, Flint, Pontiac and Saginaw to better track parolees,
- More social workers at 135 elementary schools in Detroit, Flint, Pontiac and Saginaw to combat truancy.
You can read the plan details at the Governor's office website.

"Monumental" Movie Arrives
| A new movie outlining the history and founding of our country will be showing in Saginaw, at the Saginaw 8 / Quad, on March 27th. The movie is "Monumental", and it will show in a live, one-night only theatrical event hosted by Kirk Cameron. Kirk is an actor best know for his role during the 1980s on the TV show "Growing Pains." He has recently been speaking to conservative groups around the country and his movie enlarges on that message. "In the film I retrace the footsteps of our Founders from England to America in the hope of discovering our true "national treasure." I wanted to listen to them, to learn from them. Our forefathers knew we were a forgetful people, that someday we would lose our way as a nation. So they left us "maps" that would guide us back to the source of America's success. What I discovered is amazing! This is one of the most important journeys of my life. America is worth fighting for, and so are our families. We can still be a "city upon a hill," but we need to work together. With God's help, we can turn this thing around. It's been said, "Footprints in history are not made sitting down," You can get your tickets NOW for this limited one day showing at Monumental: The Movie.

Engaging Saginaw's Youth In Government
|
Jennifer Shea, an English/Debate Teacher and Michigan Youth in Government Advisor at Heritage High School, is asking for help to send students to the Michigan Youth in Government program. The conference begins Wednesday, March 14th, so if you are interested, please contact her ASAP. Jennifer explains that Michigan Youth in Government is a program that allows students to take on the roles of our state government for a few days. They work as Representatives, Senators, Lawyers, Lobbyists, Delegates for the National Issues Forum, and press. These high school students debate and pass bills, run mock murder trials, and debate national issues to pass proposals, all in the actual desks of our current legislators. A Michigan Youth in Government experience is one that changes lives beyond what can be imagined. Unfortunately, she has several students who are having trouble coming up with the funds to support this trip. They are students Jennifer feels would strongly benefit from the experience, but for one reason or another, they cannot pay. She is asking for sponsors for these students, in order to provide them this opportunity. For the trip, each student must pay a $75 registration fee in addition to a $270 fee which provides them with a hotel room for 4 nights, a bill book, a conference with guest speaker Governor Snyder and both the House and Senate majority and minority leaders, a banquet, and awards. They also provide transportation for the students to and from the capital building from the hotel. There are over 900 students attending this conference from all over the state of Michigan, and Heritage High School has 32 students she would like to send along with three advisors. Overall, Heritage is attempting to raise roughly $5,000 in order to send their students. If you wish to support the project or need more information, please e-mail Jennifer at jdshea@stcs.org.
