Michigan Unemployment Improves
|
While unemployment is still horrible (blue line above is still much higher than historical average), Michigan job growth outpaced that of the rest of the country in 2011. Governor Snyder announced recently that in 2011, job growth in Michigan actually beat the national average, based on information from the official Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference, through which the state treasury department and the House and Senate fiscal agencies agree on what the state can realistically expect in terms of revenue for the upcoming year.
But that's not the only good news. He also stated that the state expects a budget surplus of approximately $457 million. Governor Snyder added, "...by making the tough decisions and working to structurally balance the budget, we now find ourselves in a place where instead of worrying over how to eliminate deficits, we are now able to concentrate on paying off debt and making strategic investments for the future."

Right To Work Update
|
Speaking of jobs, Indiana may become the newest Right to Work state and that threatens jobs here in Michigan. As a border state, some businesses will naturally go where business laws are most favorable.
A similar Right To Work law is working its way through Michigan's legislature, but there are several Republicans who appear to be standing in the way of adopting this simple freedom. Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville (R-Monroe) told reporters that he would be a "no" vote on right to work.
If you believe that your right to work, with or without a union, is a basic freedom, contact your Senator and Representative, as well as Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville and House Speaker Jase Bolger about this issue. Michigan Freedom To Work has more information, and
Norm Hughes, from the Michigan Conservative Union, is recruiting volunteers in each county to keep this issue in front of legislators and the public by contacting leadership and writing letters to the editor. Contact Norm if you want to get involved, at 810-678-3678.

Don't Believe Every Statistic The Government Feeds You
|
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, since Barack Obama assumed office the total population over age 16 has grown by 5.845 million to 240.5 million. Yet, the civilian labor force has actually shrunk by 349,000 - from about 154.2 million to 153.8 million. More people, but they aren't in the labor force? This is a startling contradiction, and it is at the heart of why the unemployment rate is actually much higher than the 8.5% reported by the government. The problem is that reported rate of people participating in the civilian labor force has indeed fallen from 65.7% to only 64% while Obama has been President. This method of calculation has always been used and is intended to reflect people who have lost hope and simply stopped looking for work. However, tinkering with this rate means you can make the reported unemployment numbers be just about anything you want. You could, for example, report that unemployment is going down when all you're really doing is chopping people out of the "civilian labor force", not finding them jobs. NetRightDaily reports that if those people were still counted, the actual civilian labor force would be 4.176 million higher than is reported at about 158 million. Based on this analysis, the number of unemployed is actually closer to 17 million instead of the 13 million reported jobless. That leads to the astounding conclusion that instead of 8.5%, the effective unemployment rate should be closer to 10.9%! Propaganda is does not get the real unemployed into jobs. It does not help families keep their homes. And, it does help college graduates to enter the work force. We're nowhere near where we should be, and it's Obama's fault.
