News & Events

Dear Friends,

The Saginaw County Republican Party will have a car in the Heritage Homecoming Parade.  The parade is Friday, October 14th, with line-up at 3:30pm in Green Acres Plaza on State Street, Saginaw.  Please help us to be more visible in the community by showing up to volunteer to walk with us!

This news just in: Mitt Romney won the straw poll, at the Republican's Mackinaw Conference.  Rick Perry was second, and 681 people participated in the poll.  It was a well attended conference, with National Chairman Reince Priebus reminding us that Michigan will be a KEY state in 2012. Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina brought us a message of hope and praise and added that all other states will be watching US!  Nine members of our Conngressional team had a Q & A  session and a DC update.  They sure have their hands full and need lots of support. It was a great time for all who attended.  Roll up your sleeves and get ready: 2012 is coming!!

Ann Doyle Asks For Parade Volunteers

Commissioner Ann Doyle
Ann Doyle, candidate for Michigan House District 94, is also asking for volunteers to march with her in the St. Charles Homecoming Parade.  This one is Friday, October 7th, with line-up at 4:20pm, at Jay St. & Saginaw St. or Fulton St. & Charles St.  Look for a Black Malibu with magnet signs on the side of the car with her name.

Walkers of all ages welcome. If you can't walk, we have some room in the car. People with either be tossing candy & other treats, carrying signs or just walking!  In the past, Ann's had people in wheelchairs, children in wagons and strollers, and even people on roller-blades!

Get Personal Emergency Warnings

Saginaw County 911

Did you know that Saginaw County 911 Central Dispatch will send you personal Emergency Notification messages?  Apparently, many people do not know that.  In a county with well over 100,000 households, only have 8,000 people have signed up!

What do you rely on for emergency notifications like tornado warnings, hazardous emission evacuations, and similar emergencies?  You no longer have to catch it by luck on radio or television; you can get notices sent directly to you, immediately.  All you need to do is register with Saginaw County 911 to get emergency notification sen to your cell phone, email, text message, or home phone.  Your choice: all or one!  As a bonus, Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC) paid the county $300,000 to implement the system.

I receive both the phone and e-mail notices, which include a once per month test notice, just to let you know you're still subscribed.  To sign up or for more information, go to the Saginaw County 911 website.  Or, if you don't have access to a computer, call 1-877-670-3330 for registration.  You must register to get the notifications.  Personal info is never disclosed.

Right To work Is Freedom To Work
Reinvent Michigan Member Stacy Swimp has written an interesting piece on Right To Work laws.  The Michigan Legislature is considering a "Freedom to Teach" bill, which would free Michigan teachers from union oppression.  The bill appears ready for swift passage, according to the Capitol Confidential.  Under the bill, teachers would no longer be required to join or support a union as a condition of employment.

However, why is legislation which would improve freedom only good for a select group of our workers?  Shouldn't it apply to everyone? Pete Hoekstra, candidate for US Senate, recently changed his position and now supports right to work efforts. Stacy notes that a true "Labor Freedom" Bill would ensure the following for ALL citizens, and proposed:

No person shall be required, as a condition of employment or continuation of employment, to:

  • Resign or refrain from voluntary membership in, voluntary affiliation with, or voluntary  financial support of a labor organization;
  • Become or remain a member of a labor organization;
  • Pay any dues, fees, assessments, or other charges of any kind or amount to a labor organization;
  • Pay to any charity or other third party, in lieu of such payments, any amount equivalent to or pro rata portion of dues, fees, assessments, or other charges regularly required of members of a labor organization; or
  • Be recommended, approved, referred, or cleared by or through a labor organization.
Besides the issue of freedom to choose, right to work states are also good business.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics Data recently reported that, from April 2001 to April 2011, 15 of the 22 labor freedom states were among the top 25 states in job growth. The four states with the greatest decrease were all non-labor freedom states: Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana.  Read more at Stacy's website Contagious Transformation.
