Ken Horn Discusses Legislature's Work
|

For those of you who do not receive it, here are a few excerpts from Representative Ken Horn's (R-94th District) latest newsletter. "By any account, the plan introduced by Gov. Snyder was extremely bold. Now it's our job in the House and Senate to sift through the proposal, and take testimony from citizens. We must determine which portions of the plan are best for Michigan, and which need to be modified. As a member of the House Tax Policy Committee, we've had hearings and input from citizens across the state. Many suggestions have already been implemented as we move forward to meet the June 1st budget deadline." One of the more controversial proposals from the governor was a strict program that would tax all pensions. Ken notes, "He now has worked with our legislative team on a compromise plan that would phase in a tax exemption to protect older retirees and their older pensions, which in many cases carry no cost of living adjustment. We are still taking testimony in my tax policy committee."
To improve Michigan's horrible business climate, the legislature is working on a total overhaul of the Corporate Income Tax (CIT). Ken states, "There is very little doubt, from members on both sides of the aisle, that the Michigan Business Tax (MBT) and its additional 22% surcharge must be replaced. It is my opinion that the MBT caused such an upheaval among Michigan's small family businesses that many job providers eliminated positions, and in worse case scenarios, simply closed their doors. The new CIT is a simple 6% tax on C-Corporations, eliminates all business tax-loopholes, and takes Michigan from the bottom twenty business friendly states to the top twenty. I'm confident that this will grow the economy by lowering unemployment and moving families back to Michigan."

What Do Our Taxes Really Pay For?
|
Maybe you saw this "tax receipt" created by a think tank group called Third Way. The idea is to show you the breakdown of just where your federal tax dollars go, by the various programs such as Medicaid, defense, foreign aid, etc. The White House has a calculator on their website that allows you to calculate something similar.
Close inspection of the receipt shows an astounding number: at least 57% of federal tax dollars go directly to someone else's pocket, taking money from one person to give it directly to someone else! You are not buying or building anything for all this money, and you are not receiving any services either. The 57% figure is derived by adding the categories of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Low-Income Assistance, Unemployment Compensation, and Health. There could be more direct transfers, as some portion of Social Services, Health, Education, and Housing also involve payments.
The interest on the debt is almost another 7%, which also does not purchase anything for you, as you know from paying interest on your own personal debts. The Daily Caller reports that this interest amount is actually low, because the White House webpage hides the deficit by pretending that all Social Security and Medicare taxes go to pay for those entitlement programs. In reality, those taxes are commingled with income, corporate and excise taxes, and are used to pay for a bit of everything. You can learn more at Yahoo! News.
