Dear Friends,
Congratulations to Representative Dave Camp (R-4th district)! Dave was selected this week by the Republican Conference to serve as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee for the 112th Congress. Dave will be only the third Representative from Michigan to serve as Chairman of this Committee. Upon being selected as Chairman, Camp said, "I pledge to my colleagues, the American people and my constituents that the Ways and Means Committee will focus on a job-creating agenda and reducing out-of-control federal spending. In doing so, the committee will directly engage and listen to the American people - ensuring those impacted by the policies enacted in Washington have a voice in the process." Some Interesting Facts about the Committee on Ways and Means: * It is the oldest committee in Congress. * It is the exclusive tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives; the jurisdiction comes from Article I, Section VII of the U.S. Constitution which declares, "All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives." * The Committee also has jurisdiction over all tariffs and other revenue-raising measures, Social Security, unemployment benefits, Medicare, and welfare programs. * Only two other Representatives from Michigan have been Chairmen of the Ways and Means Committee - Rep. Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak (2010) and Rep. Joseph W. Fordney, R-Saginaw (1919-1923.) * Eight Presidents and eight Vice Presidents have served on Ways and Means, as have 21 Speakers of the House of Representatives, and four Justices of the Supreme Court. * The Presidents that previously served on the Committee include: George H. W. Bush, Millard Fillmore, James A. Garfield, Andrew Jackson, James Madison, William McKinley, Jr., James K. Polk, John Tyler. |

Legislative Day at the Capitol |

The Republican Women's Federation of Michigan will hold their Legislative Day at the Capitol Building in Lansing, Thursday, April 14th. The event begins 10:00am and ends about 2:30pm. State Republican Chair, Bobby Schostak, and Secretary of State Ruth Johnson will be featured speakers. Almost all Republican Representatives and Senators, as well as perhaps some Supreme Court Judges, will be stopping by throughout the day to answer questions and discuss their position on various topics. Coffee and donuts served from 9:00-10:00am compliments of Senators Judy Emmons and Tonya Schutemaker. Box lunch will be compliments of Republican Legislative Leadership.
There is no charge for this event. This is a great way to get a good preview of the political year to come at these (mostly informal) meetings, and to network with fellow Republicans. Everyone is invited. Deadline to reserve a lunch will be no later than April 12, 2011. A reservation form is available from Nancy Steckler.

"World of Debt" Town Hall Series |
Americans For Prosperity is continuing their "World of Debt" town hall series, coming to the Bay City/Saginaw/Midland area March 22nd. Come find out about the United States' rising debt and the spending practices that have led to the over $14 TRILLION, more than $42,000 per person, we owe. This town hall aims to bring the discussion about federal spending to the forefront and provide you with the info to keep it going into your community. We must keep the pressure on Congress to get runaway spending under control! The town hall meeting is at Williams Township Hall,1080 West Midland Rd., Auburn, on Tuesday, March 22nd, from 7:00- 8:00pm. You can RSVP at Americans For Prosperity Facebook page. And, speaking of cutting federal spending, the latest YouCut proposals are up. One of the items up is the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The City of Saginaw has received millions of dollars under this program that are being spent to rebuild houses that are then placed on the market at below-market prices, forcing landlords and others to abandon more houses because they cannot compete with the government. Let your representatives know what you think is wasteful and should be cut!

Meet The New Boss...Same As The Old Boss?
| Here's an interesting analysis of how the last Republican Revolution, in 1994, stalled out. What makes it interesting is that it's authored by someone who was there, Representative John Shadegg (R). What happened then and how can we avoid those mistakes? |
The Republican mission seeks to maintain a strong defense, encourage individual achievement and liberty through the free enterprise system, and strengthen families. If you would like to help us move the area and the country towards these goals, please consider donating to the Saginaw County Republican Committee. Every donation, no matter how large or small, will help ensure that we can find and elect people to work for those goals. You can do so by mail to PO BOX 6653, Saginaw, MI 48608 or on the web at www.saginawcountygop.com.
