Dear Friends,
Thanks to Representative Ken Horn for a lively disscussion on the State budget at last weeks Executive Committee meeting. Pensions were a hot button topic, and he was able to shed some light on the matter. He thinks Governor Snyder is on the right track, and likes working with him. If you want more information on Governor Snyder's proposed budget, you can download the entire document. |

Emmaus House of Saginaw Launches "Homes Of Hope" Project
|
Member Ray Bartels brought a project to our attention that aims to help a local charity to help local women in need. Emmaus House is a home for women, especially women coming from jail, prison, or rehab. Their purpose is to provide the women with a family-like, Christian atmosphere while they are creating new lives for themselves. While they have no fixed time for their guests' stay at Emmaus, they provide a home until the women are able to be on their own.
Emmaus House receives no financial help from any governmental body, relying instead on public contributions from people like us. The staff are "missionaries" working without real salaries. In a new project, they plan to remodel and renovate the 12 homes they own over the next 2 to 3 years, making them safer, energy efficient and more comfortable for their guests. The average age of their homes is seventy nine years old. You can see from the pictures on their website that they remain in good repair, and this is due not only to the efforts of the Emmaus House organization, but because the women living in them take great pride in the upkeep of their homes and yards. It is now time for some major repairs, thus the request for more funds.
They are asking for donations and to keep costs low, they plan to have the work performed by a mix of qualified volunteers, contractors and suppliers. If this is a project you wish to support, you can make your checks out to "Emmaus House" and mail them to 733 South 14th St, Saginaw MI 48601.
Also, you can help Emmaus House in other ways, including:
Volunteer your services, expertise, or time (acting as receptionist, transporter, sorter of donations);
Collect items for them including food, household items, furniture, working appliances, or anything usable to help start a household;
Commit to praying for their women;
Tell others about Emmaus House's needs.

Will Saudi Arabia Be Next Government To Fall?
| Political writer Dick Morris believes that Saudi Arabia may be the next Middle East monarchy to fall. As he writes at his blog, we can do without Libya's two million barrels a day of oil, but if we lose Saudi Arabia's nine million, we will face a global catastrophe. He notes that the country matches the recent pattern: the king is 86 years old and very ill and in the succession line are 7,000 princes, each ambitious and at war with one another. The monarchy will not be able to buy off the opposition for long with cash subsidies.
He argues that the only long-term solution we have is to get serious about new drilling for oil right here. To that end, Republicans must call for reining in the regulatory hoops that on-shore drilling has to go through to get approval. Obama's people are so sensitive to these criticisms that they just approved the first permit since the BP spill. Additionally, Republicans should press for much, shorter approval times for nuclear power and a ban on EPA regulation and taxation of carbon and coal. Finally, the Republicans should resurrect the issue of drilling in the ANWR Preserve in Alaska. Dick believes that Sarah Palin should take the lead in this, since energy development is her major field of real substantive expertise. It is an ideal opportunity for her to speak to a broader constituency.
President Obama's opposition to fossil fuels is his real Achilles Heel. At some level of gas prices, everybody is for fossil fuel development. Nobody is "green" at $6 a gallon! You can read his whole article, and more on the subject, including why he believes the federal gasoline tax should be eliminated, at Dick Morris's blog.

The Republican mission seeks to maintain a strong defense, encourage individual achievement and liberty through the free enterprise system, and strengthen families. If you would like to help us move the area and the country towards these goals, please consider donating to the Saginaw County Republican Committee. Every donation, no matter how large or small, will help ensure that we can find and elect people to work for those goals. You can do so by mail to PO BOX 6653, Saginaw, MI 48608 or on the web at www.saginawcountygop.com.
