Tea Party Express Pursuing Defeat Of Debbie Stabenow In 2012!
|
The Tea Party Express, one of the largest national tea party groups, has added Michigan's Senator Debbie Stabenow (D) to the list of elected officials that it will be working to defeat in 2012. Stabenow joins Olympia Snowe (R), Ben Nelson (D) and Richard Lugar (R) who have already been singled out for defeat by the group. They are still working on a complete list that will be unveiled later this year. Amy Kremer, Chairman of the Tea Party Express, stated, "Stabenow has been an advocate for the big government nanny state, forgetting that we the people tell the government what to do, not the other way around. She has had particular fondness for the authoritarian Fairness Doctrine, and we think it's only appropriate that the Senate be more fair and balanced by replacing her with a constitutional conservative." Over the years, Ms. Stabenow has been in favor of laws limiting our freedom of speech in elections, laws limiting our freedom from unreasonable search when flying, has voted in favor of the huge spending that has resulted in our multi-trillion dollar national debt, has been in favor of amnesty for illegal immigrants, and of course, voted in favor of President Obama's health care bill. In short, she has been on the wrong side of every issue affecting liberty and the excessive size and spending of the federal government. You can find more details on her votes, or votes of other representatives, by signing up with MegaVote. The big test in replacing her will be whether the Tea Party Express can find a suitable candidate to run against her, where the Michigan Republican Party has failed. There are expected to be many Republicans enter the race in next year's primary.

Can We Please Keep Our Light Bulbs?
|
One of the items recently added to Congress' agenda was light bulbs. Republican Representatives Joe Barton of Texas, Michael Burgess of Texas, and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee introduced the Better Use of Light Bulbs Act, otherwise known as the BULB Act. The purpose of the BULB Act is to repeal a section of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 that called for more energy efficient light bulbs. That law will make our familiar incandescent light bulbs illegal by 2012. Michigan's Representative Fred Upton (R) is now the chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee and has promised a hearing on the ban, but so far no such hearing has been scheduled. In December, when he was vying for the chairmanship, he changed his position .from previously supporting the ban. Representative Upton said, "The last thing we wanted to do was infringe upon personal liberties - and this has been a good lesson that Congress does not always know best." While the ban on light bulbs was a bad idea for many reasons, what finally brought it to a head for Representative Burgess and others was the report in the Washington Post that the last incandescent light bulb factory, located in Winchester, Virginia, is closing. GE, the company that operates the factory, will fire 200 workers. Compact Florescent Bulbs (CFLs), the more energy efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs, are manufactured overseas, primarily in China. It was this story about the loss of American jobs that reignited Burgess' interest in the issue and made him want to address it through legislation. He said that in 2007 when the Clean Energy Act passed, the reasoning for the phasing out of incandescent bulbs was that over the course of five years, technology would advance, so that by the time incandescent bulbs were fully phased out, there would be more energy efficient, cheaper technology to replace it, so it wouldn't be a problem for consumers. But since that hasn't happened, he said, it is necessary to reevaluate the ban. As incandescent bulbs are cheaper than CFLs, Representative Barton said in an interview with The Daily Caller, "It's a debatable proposition whether the energy saved offsets the additional costs." As a result, he said, you may end up with "some low-income families, literally, in the dark." Of course, another major problem with CFLs is that they contain mercury, creating a potentially dangerous situation if one breaks. The EPA recommends that if you break a CFL bulb, everyone should evacuate while the room is aired out for at least fifteen minutes. If the mercury gets onto any bedding or clothing, those articles should be thrown out! There are also some serious concerns that the energy saving aspect of the CFLs has been exaggerated. A study reported in the Wall Street Journal found that CFLs in real life use burn our much faster than their expected use, which was based on laboratory conditions. The useful life of each bulb was expected to be 9.4 years but has been found to be only 6.3 years, calling in to question the entire "green" premise of mandating the bulbs. For both congressmen, the economic concerns now outweigh the environmental concerns. "I'm not opposed to the energy saving bulbs at all," Barton said, "but I say let the consumers make the choice, instead of mandating." A new petition to support the repeal of the ban on incandescent bulbs has been posted by Free Our Light, where you can send the Congressmen a vote to keep your liberty.

Read The House Continuing Resolution
| If you want to see the details of the $100 billion the US House Republicans want to cut from the current year's budget, the documents are now available online at YouCut. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has posted several documents including the full legislative text. Now, not only can Congress "read the bill" before voting on it, but you and I can too! That's transparency! A possible added bonus in this continuing resolution: Congressman Denny Rehberg (R) has introduced an amendment to the bill that would prohibit the Obama Administration from spending money implementing ObamaCare. A lot of people have talked about defunding ObamaCare, but Representative Rehberg is doing something about it. As the Chairman of the powerful Appropriations subcommittee that decides on the funding for the Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services, Mr. Rehberg is at the tip of the spear in this fight, and you can read more about his amendment and make sure our Congressmen Camp and Kildee know about it. |

Support For The Tough State Budget Choices
|

Voters in Wisconsin, disgusted with big spending Democrats and out of control unions, handled the whole state over to Republicans last November, not unlike here in Michigan. Seizing the voter mandate, Wisconsin's Republican Governor Scott Walker is pushing through legislation to have public employee unions pay for a larger portion of their health benefits and pension plans, as well as limiting their collective bargaining rights to matters of basic wages.
To avoid the issue by ensuring there is no quorum in the Senate, Democrat lawmakers in Wisconsin have fled to Illinois. While only 17 votes are needed, 20 of the 33 senators must be present for the body to conduct business. More details are at RedState.com.
Meanwhile, public sector union members have stormed the state capitol, joined by protesters sent in by President Obama's organization, Organizing for America. Teachers have staged a 'sick in' ,putting their union privileges ahead of educating children. These actions only serve to bolster Governor Walker's point that union abuse needs to be reined in.
Naturally, Barack Obama has sided with the union goons.
Where Michigan could make changes to save money on public employees is by changing PERA, the Public Employment Relations Act, a law passed in Lansing in 1965. Michigan Capitol Confidential notes that over $5 billion is paid to public sector employees in excessive benefits annually, over amounts paid in the private sector. This law could be reformed or repealed, placing local governments in a much better position to get these costs back under control. This is a good time to make sure our Governor and our state legislators hear from their conservative base, letting them know you support the budget saving reforms in Wisconsin, and want Michigan to stand with Wisconsin. You can contact Governor Rick Snyder, Representative Ken Horn, Representative Stacy Erwin Oakes , Representative Jim Stamas, and Senator Roger Kahn to let them know.
