News & Events
Dear Friends,

The Saginaw County Republican Party winter County Convention will be held on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 7:00pm.  The location is the First United Methodist Church, 4790 Gratiot Rd, Saginaw.  At this convention, we will be electing delegates to attend the Michigan State convention on January 28-29 in Grand Rapids.  The State Convention will elect a new state party chair and other officers.

Precinct delegates are given preference to be elected delegates to the State Convention.  However, anyone who would like to be a delegate to that convention is encouraged to send their name to saginawgop@yahoo.com.  Vacancies may exist that can be filled by others.

Only elected and appointed precinct delegates are eligible to vote at the County Convention.  However, members of the public are welcome to attend.

Immediately after the County Convention, there will be a short, organizational meeting of the Executive Committee.

Saul Anuzis On His Way to RNC Chair?

Saul Anuzis

Michigan's Saul Anuzis will be in a debate with 5 other candidates for the Chair of the Republican National Committee.  The other candidates are Maria Cino, Reince Priebus, Gentry Collins, Ann Wagner, and current RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

The debate will take place in Washington, DC on  Monday, January 3rd, 2011 at 1:00pm EST, at
the National Press Club.  It will be live-streamed on the internet at both The Daily Caller and RNCDebate.org.  Their actual election will be held on January 12-15, 2011.  The debate is co-hosted by Americans for Tax Reform and The Daily Caller.

The other candidates' backgrounds include Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin; Ann Wagner, former Missouri GOP chairwoman; Gentry Collins, the RNC's political director until November of this year; Maria Cino, CEO of the Republican National Convention in Minnesota during the 2008 election cycle; and Michael Steele, current RNC Chairman running for re-election.

Daily Caller publisher Neil Patel vowed the debate will be both fair and tough, and also be the most "technologically advanced debate ever conducted."  As part of this goal, audience participation will feature prominently. Questions used during the debate will come from those submitted and voted on at RNCDebate.org.

First Priority for New Congress
Gadsen Flag
OK, so we have a Republican House of Representatives and a few more Republicans in the Senate than last year.  So what's next?

First on the GOP to-do list needs to be defining the debate going forward. Republicans are now able to say what the most pressing concerns are through their votes on legislation. There is a big agenda to choose from: repealing ObamaCare, making the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent to help create jobs, rescinding the EPA's endangerment finding, cancelling TARP and the "stimulus", killing the Dodd-Frank unlimited bailout fund before it gets started, and auditing the Federal Reserve.  There is no need to compromise on these items: they can and should be dealt with in short order, whether support can be generated in the Senate or not.

The unifying policy for all these items is simple: SPEND LESS!
The House in particular can set this agenda.  If they start off by submitting a budget proposal with baseline 2007 levels of $2.7 trillion (as opposed to the current $3.6 trillion), they could immediately reduce the deficit by about $900 billion. Then the goal should be to get that number down to zero throughout the budget process with amendments offered by eliminating unnecessary programs and spending.  That's where the large programs like TARP, the "stimulus", the bailouts of Fannie and Freddie, the Dodd-Frank financial takeover, and repealing ObamaCare come in.

But it would also be necessary to go after federal subsidies, corporate welfare, eliminate whole departments and agencies, and  eventually eliminate smaller but still unneeded budget items like public broadcasting. Whatever it takes, House Republicans should fight to get a balanced budget to the Senate, all the way holding individual roll call votes on individual spending cuts. That is the only way to expose members who consistently vote to keep spending at unsustainable levels.

Just imagine in July, 2011, Republicans could hand-deliver a balanced budget to Obama. Let him veto it and  threaten to shut the government down. The Republicans could then go home to constituents and take the airwaves, declaring the nation's independence from foreign creditors like China.

But, we must keep reminding them that priority one is to simply spend less.  Send your Representative, Senators, and even the President frequent correspondence on what to cut.  You can send by mail, phone, or e-mail.  You can probably even Tweet them, but let them know what should be unfunded!  Use YouCut, or this new survey from the National Republican Congressional Committee.  They have published a "Listening To America" survey, mailed it to millions of Americans, and placed it online at Listening To America. The survey has questions on taxes, spending, national security, health care policy and more.  Of course, the committee also asks for a donation to further their activities.

Michigan Loses Again

US Census

For anyone who did not hear the news yet, Michigan's congressional delegation will drop by 1 member beginning in 2012, meaning the state will have 14 members of the U. S. House.  Michigan was the only state to lose population in the 2010 census compared to the 2000 census, dropping by 0.6 percent, according to the  new figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau. With the loss, Michigan has now lost congressional representation for four consecutive census counts!  At its peak, Michigan had 19 members of the U.S. House.

The Republican mission seeks to maintain a strong defense, encourage individual achievement and liberty through the free enterprise system, and strengthen families.  If you would like to help us move the area and the country towards these goals, please consider donating to the Saginaw County Republican Committee.  Every donation, no matter how large or small, will help ensure that we can find and elect people to work for those goals.  You can do so by mail to PO BOX 6653, Saginaw, MI  48608 or on the web at www.saginawcountygop.com.

Sincerely,
Helene Wiltse, Chair, Saginaw County Republican Party
