Balancing Saginaw County's Budget:
Public Safety And Your Wallet In Jeopardy
The County Commissioners, after a year of making hard choices on the 2011 County Budget, will be facing an end run at their meeting next Tuesday.  For the past several years, this Board has avoided making cuts in the county budget by depleting their reserve funds.  This year, they will be trying to balance the budget on a prayer.  There will be an amendment offered  at Tuesday's meeting to defer cuts and layoffs through May 2011, when they hope to have YOU pass a 1.5 county millage increase.  If the millage fails, cuts required to meet expenses will nearly double the cuts now required.  Meanwhile, the County will need to operate on borrowed money and pay otherwise unnecessary interest expense.

The Commissioners will be meeting Tuesday, September 21st  at 5:00 pm at the County Courthouse, 111 S. Michigan Avenue.  Commissioner Pat Wurtzel plans to introduce a counter-amendment to the County Budget proposal, designed to place public safety as the highest priority, and make the needed cuts elsewhere.

I encourage all Saginaw County citizens to attend this meeting to support those few on the Board of Commissioners who will oppose this dangerous action and who favor fiscal responsibility.  If you cannot attend, please e-mail your local Commissioner.  You can find their e-mail addresses and a District map at the Board of Commissioners web page.

Something New In Buena Vista Township  Treasurer's Race
Gadsen Flag Betty V. Garza is running as an Independent in Buena Vista Township for Treasurer.  She says her views are conservative but did not feel she could successfully run as a Republican in the township.

Betty is a 40-year resident of the township with over 25 years of experience in management and small business.  She is currently a member of the Buena Vista Township Planning and Zoning Committee.

She has a number of innovations in mind that she hopes will improve citizens' interaction with the treasurer's office, including re-opening the drive-thru window and setting up payment plans for back payments. She also has some ideas to improve the accountability of the Buena Vista Township government, which has suffered in the past, including new procedures for departments, and cost savings in the treasurer's office starting with returning half of her salary and all benefits.

Betty is hoping that people will cross over and split their vote.  If you live in Buena Vista Township and want an alternative to continued Democrat control of the government there, contact Betty for more information, or write to Committee To Elect Betty Garza, PO BOX 14367, Saginaw, MI 48601.

You're Not Alone!
If you've ever feared that you were in the minority for believing in smaller government, fear no more.  A recent Rasmussen Reports poll found that sixty-eight percent (68%) of U.S. voters prefer a smaller government with fewer services and lower taxes, as opposed to a more active one that offers more services and higher taxes.

That result is the second highest finding in their surveying on the question since November 2006, exceeded only by a 70% finding in August of last year.  In nearly four years of surveying on the question, support for a smaller government has never been lower that 55%, while backing for a more active government has run as low as just 19%. These consistently high numbers go a long way to explaining why voters stormed congressional town hall meetings across the country to complain about pending health care legislation, the bailouts of the auto and financial industry and the $787-billion (and counting) economic stimulus plan.

The findings also explain why you and I are Republicans: eighty-eight percent (88%) of Republicans prefer a smaller government.  Among and voters not affiliated with either major party, 74% prefer smaller government, while Democrats are evenly divided. But we can also see why our political class keeps voting in tax increases and more borrowing and spending.  Sixty-one percent (61%) of the political class prefer a more active government with more services and higher taxes!

And, like the majority of the political class, President Obama doesn't get it.  He recently announced plans for at least $50 billion in new spending on transportation infrastructure and billions more in tax credits in hopes of jumpstarting the troubled economy.  Consequently, the majority of us don't trust Congress and especially the Democrats.  Rasmussen also found that most voters believe Democrats in Congress want to raise taxes and spending, while Republicans in Congress want to cut taxes and spending. The latest Generic Congressional Ballot finds that 48% of Likely Voters would vote for their district's Republican congressional candidate, while only 36% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent. This matches the largest advantage ever measured for the Republicans three weeks ago.

You can read more at Rasmussen Reports.  The company is an electronic media company specializing in the collection, publication and distribution of public opinion polling information.  The poll referenced above was a survey of 1,000 'Likely Voters' conducted on September 2-3, 2010.
Democrats Attack Justice Bob Young
Obamacare Cartoon
The Democratic Party and their coalition of special interests are at it again, trying to play the Nazi card. A new attack video on YouTube likens Justice Young's convention speech to a Nazi rally and compares him to Hitler.  To see what we mean, you can watch excerpts from this  video on YouTube.

This recent attack makes it clear that radical special interests have no limits to how low they will go to slander Justice Young's record and attempt to deceive the public like they did with the sleeping judge ads in 2008.  The truth about Justice Young is that a vote for him is a vote for the rule of law!

Michigan needs to keep Justice Bob Young on the Supreme Court. A tough, no nonsense rule of law judge, Bob Young believes the job of our judges is to uphold the law - and not to use the bench as an excuse to create laws by judges.  His rulings upholding the laws of our state have earned him the endorsements Michigan's police officers and law enforcement community. His judicial philosophy has earned him praises from leaders throughout the state.

We invite you to explore Justice Bob Young's website and learn more about him and why we need to keep him on the Michigan Supreme Court.

The Republican mission seeks to maintain a strong defense, encourage individual achievement and liberty through the free enterprise system, and strengthen families.  If you would like to help us move the area and the country towards these goals, please consider donating to the Saginaw County Republican Committee.  Every donation, no matter how large or small, will help ensure that we can find and elect people to work for those goals.  You can do so by mail to PO BOX 6653, Saginaw, MI  48608 or on the web at www.saginawcountygop.com.
