Parade Help Needed In Fenton
|
Rick Wilson, candidate for Congress in the 5th District, is looking for some help in the Fenton
Independence Day Parade on July 3rd. Anyone who wishes to march with him will get a "Rick Wilson for Congress" T-shirt,
until the supply or the correct sizes run out. They are staging on Grant
Street, just south of downtown Fenton, and will meet no later than 9:30am. The parade starts at 10:00am, and should last for about 1½ hours. There is parking on the side streets, but not
on Grant or West
Street. The
Parade ends at St. John's
Catholic Church, in the 500-600 blocks of Adelaide St. If you like a parade, and a pleasant Saturday drive to Fenton, come on out and help Rick. |
Immigration: The More Things Change The More They Stay The Same?
|

Disgust over our federal responses to illegal immigration is high, so high that states such as Arizona are now trying to take the matter into their own hands. The people believe that immigrants should follow the laws, as shown by public polls finding that up to 75% believe the federal government is
not doing enough
to keep illegal immigrants from coming into this country. But, what has really changed here? It turns out that only the government has changed; the people always thought immigrants should follow the laws. Back in 1907, a presidential candidate could campaign on tough immigration laws, and Theodore Roosevelt did. A quote from Mr. Roosevelt sounds very much like what we would expect, but no longer get, from our government today. "In
the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here
in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he
shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an
outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or
birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's
becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an
American....There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says
he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all.
We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for
but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have
room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American
people." In Michigan, State Representative Kim Meltzer is sponsoring a bill similar to Arizona's. According to a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services 2000 field report, nearly
70,000 illegal immigrants were estimated to be in Michigan. In a state with the high unemployment and reduced state revenue we have, we just can't afford this. You can read more about it in the Oakland Legal News and may want to tell your legislators to support it. |
