Rick Wilson Formally Announces His Campaign
| Local Businessman Rick
Wilson will be working to unseat Congressman Dale Kildee in Michigan's 5th District. To kick-off his campaign, Rick will be holding a series of press conferences throughout the 5th District on Monday, May 3rd. The press conferences will be at the following locations and times:
Flint - 12:00 noon at the SE corner of the intersection of Dort Hwy and Davison Rd, where the former AC Spark Plug factory was located, Caro - 2:00 pm, at the Tuscola County Courthouse, 440 North State St, Saginaw
- 3:30 pm, at the Saginaw County Courthouse, 111 South Michigan Ave, Bay
City - 4:30 pm, at the Bay County Building, 515 Center Ave.
Rick explains, "Congressman Kildee has lost touch with the voters in his district, and no longer represents their best interests to Washington. After serving for seventeen (17) terms in Congress it is time for Kildee to retire."
Rick Wilson's leadership positions, experience and dedication help to make him a powerful advocate for the citizens of Michigan's 5th Congressional District. Rick
Wilson has a strong business background. He spent his career working
in the auto industry first as an engineer and then as a manager and
supervisor during 35 years at AC Spark Plug. Rick eventually found himself leading a staff
of almost 300 employees and overseeing a budget of over $10 million. He saw his career as a manager in the auto industry abruptly end when his factory became a parking lot instead of a place of employment. Rick understands first hand how hard the 5th District has been hit by the sagging auto industry, poor economic conditions and high unemployment, and when he is elected Rick will work tirelessly to bring jobs and industry back to the district."Michigan is at an economic crossroads," said Wilson. "As your Congressman I will make decisions to help grow the U.S. economy and bring good paying jobs here to Michigan so families and young people can stay and prosper. I am ready to lead the fight for Michigan's future." One
of the reasons Rick is running is to leave this country a better place
for his two grandchildren. For more information about Rick and his plans to turn the 5th District around please visit, www.rickwilsonforcongress.com.

Census Reports Nearly Half of U.S. Residents Live in Households
Receiving Government Benefits
| In the third quarter of 2008, approximately 45 percent of U.S.
residents lived in households in which at least one individual received
government benefits, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. These benefits came from programs such as Social Security,
Medicare and Medicaid.
About 24 percent
of the U.S. total received means-tested benefits (programs that provide cash or services to people
who meet a test of need based on income and assets.) in an average month. These included Medicaid, free or reduced-price school meals, and food
stamps. However, it was
two non-means-tested programs, Social Security and Medicare, that
affected the largest number of households, with 33.6 million receiving
Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits and 30.8 million
receiving benefits from Medicare.
In keeping with the economic downturn, participation rates for each
means-tested program were on the upswing between May and November 2008. And this doesn't even include those on unemployment benefits.
Of course, the other 55 percent have to be paying for all this! |
Too Late To Save Charter Schools In Michigan?
|
 On April 29, a
conference committee of 6 legislators met to hammer out a
compromise between the versions of the teacher reform bills passed by the House
and the Senate. The state legislature will be voting on SB 1227 to reform the public
school employee pension system and save school districts millions of
dollars. Amazingly, his bill provides for mandatory
inclusion of all charter school teachers into the Michigan Public School
Employee Retirement System (MPSERS), regardless of who hires
them! There are
currently 454,000 active and retired teachers in MPSERS, and this bloated
retirement system is in serious financial trouble. The employer contribution
necessary to support MPSERS is going up to 19% of total payroll this year, and
the House-passed version of the bill will force roughly 4,000 non-participating
charter school teachers into the system to help foot the bill. This
language would be a huge detriment to the charter school movement, as the cost of bailing out this
pension program could bankrupt charter schools and leave charter
students and families without educational choices.
The House and Senate will be voting on a compromise on SB 1227 THIS WEEK, unless they snuck it by us last week. If you want to preserve charter schools, it is important that
you contact the office of Representative Mark Meadows or your Senator or Representative. and ask them to take charter schools OUT of the MPSERS bill. Some contact information:
