State of The Taxpayer Rally
GrassrootsUSA
Member Donald Milne brings us this on-the-ground report of a recent event.  "This past Wednesday, I had the pleasure of attending the "State of the Citizen Address" rally on the steps of the Capitol Building in Lansing.  As with the T.E.A. party protest held in the same spot back in April, this was a chance to let our state legislators know we are not satisfied with the way they're conducting our business.  There were over 500 of us on the lawn and steps, during Governor Granholm's State of the State Address.  We heard from some speakers on the state of the taxpayers and the state of the government.  You can watch a video of the event from WILX TV-10 at http://www.wilx.com/home/headlines/83510317.html.  Besides the information presented, we chanted "blown away" and other lines loud enough to be heard inside the Capitol Building!  And, I just loved the home-made signs, highlighting the many different reasons to be dissatisfied with our legislators.

The rally was hosted by Michigan Taxpayers Alliance, Common Sense in Government and others.  The main message was that the state of the taxpayers is actually very strong.  Despite being financially weakened, we are better organized, better informed, and more motivated than at any time in modern history.  We can all make a difference this year at the ballot box by removing the politicians who've been responsible for bad spending, high taxes, and failure to reform the way Lansing works.  Rallies like this make sure the politicians pay attention!"

New Information Source
Mackinac Center For Public Policy

One of the things I discovered at the rally was a publication called Capitol Confidential.  This is a bi-monthly newspaper from the Mackinac Center For Public Policy.  It highlights Michigan legislation and issues, with lists of how our legislators voted on various bills.  They tell the stories of politicians who find alternatives to bigger government...and those who do not.  They also note legislators who vote the opposite of what they tell us.  A great way to see who to contact, blame, praise, etc.

And recently, they've made it even better by creating an online version!   Check at http://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/pubs/mcc/ for a daily, online news source.  As with the print edition, it offers a second opinion on the concept of "bigger government" remedies to public policy questions.  We've all noticed newspapers shrinking or disappearing, so it's increasingly important to have a new source of information on our elected officials and government bureaucracies.   Try it out and subscribe to either the print or online versions if you like what you see.

Precinct Delegates Needed!
GrassrootsUSA
Don't forget the deadline for Precinct Delegate filing is May 11, 2010.
I know that's a long time away, but time goes fast.  Precinct delegates are the ultimate grassroots of politics.  By becoming one, you build your party the way YOU want it!

If you are interested in becoming a precinct delegate for the Saginaw County Republican Party, please e-mail us at saginawgop@yahoo.com.  We have openings in dozens of precincts.

An organization called Grassroots USA is again hosting Pizza & Politics meetings, as they did last year.  These were Friday night outreaches held before the State Committee meetings.  Last year they served over 1,500 and they also mail a newsletter 5 times a year, send e-mail messages, maintain a website at www.grassrootsusa.net, and promote a scholarship fund.  To learn more about this busy group, check their website or write Mr. Hank Fuhs at:

Property Tax Appeal Forums Scheduled

Don't Tread On Me

State Senator Roger Kahn has announced a schedule for his property tax appeal seminars in Saginaw and Gratiot Counties.  All meetings are free and open to the public.  "Last year I held property tax appeal seminars to give residents information on how to effectively appeal their property tax bills," Kahn said. "There were many important questions that needed answers. That's why I'm proud to host similar events this year to help people understand the property tax appeal process."

The free forums will feature attorney Mike Bosnic, who handles property tax appeals in his practice. Bosnic will discuss appeal methods and common mistakes to avoid, and answer questions from area taxpayers.  The forums are scheduled as follows:

Monday, February 15
7:00pm
Curtiss Hall, second floor
Saginaw Valley State University
Saginaw, MI

Wednesday, February 17
7:00pm
Peet Community Center
130 N. Saginaw St.
Chesaning, MI

Saturday, February 20
1:00pm
Dow Building L-1, Alma College
614 W. Superior St.
Alma, MI

Several shortcomings in state law were noted at last year's seminars, such as residents not receiving their assessment notices in time for the March boards of review.  In response, Senator Kahn has introduced legislation to allow residents to appeal by letter rather than in person and require assessment notices be sent out earlier.  He is also a co-sponsor of a measure that would prevent property taxes from increasing if your home's value has fallen.

If you cannot attend one of the forums, you can obtain written information from Kahn's office by calling toll free 1-866-305-2132 or writing senrkahn@senate.michigan.gov.  Roger also has detailed information on how to file appeals at http://www.senate.michigan.gov/gop/publications/32/20100204_Kahn_PTA.pdf.

The Republican mission seeks to maintain a strong defense, encourage individual achievement and liberty through the free enterprises system, and strengthen families.  If you would like to help us move the area and the country towards these goals, please consider donating to the Saginaw County Republican Committee.  Every donation, no matter how large or small, will help ensure that we can find and elect people to work for those goals.  You can do so by mail to PO BOX 6653, Saginaw, MI  48608 or on the web at www.saginawcountygop.com.
