News & Events
Dear Friends,

On behalf of the officers and the executive committee of the Saginaw County Republican Party, let me wish everyone a safe, joyous, and family focused holiday season.  Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Taxpayers Alliance Awards Banquet
Michigan Taxpayers Alliance

The very first Michigan Taxpayers Alliance (MTA) Awards Banquet was held on December 10th at the American Polish Cultural Center in Troy.  Over 200 taxpayer activists were on hand to see Robert Bobb, the Emergency Financial Manager for the Detroit Public Schools, named the 'Hero of the Taxpayers' and WJR AM 760 talk radio personality Frank Beckmann was recognized with the 'Voice of the Taxpayer' award.

The 'Activist of the Year' award was given to Wendy Day, who was a key player in organizing many Tea Party protests during 2009 (including the 'big one' in Lansing back on April 15).

The guests enjoyed dinner, speeches from all three award winners, and camaraderie for the evening.  The MTA intends to host another banquet next year, so plan on going.

The Michigan Taxpayers Alliance is an alliance of Michigan citizens who believe the state government of Michigan is hurting citizens and our economy by taking too much money from citizens and redistributing it through ever-increasing spending.  Its members are dedicated to stopping the state from increasing taxes from any segment of Michigan citizens, even those that government sees as an 'easy mark' due to their relative unpopularity; i.e. smokers, alcohol drinkers, "big business", small business, gamblers, "bad drivers", "the wealthy", farmers, or ANY other taxpayer regardless of their political vulnerability.  Find out more at their website: www.mitaxpayers.org.

More from the Secretary of State Campaign
Senator Cameron S. BrownBesides Anne Norlander, profiled here a few weeks ago, Cameron S. Brown is also a candidate for Secretary of State in 2010.  He is  currently a State Senator and has introduced some legislation to help Michigan avoid some fraudulent election tactics practiced by ACORN and others.

Senate Bills 690-695 would prohibit organizations like ACORN from establishing voter registration quotas or bonuses - both practices that have been proven to encourage the submission of falsified registrations.

Several states have already outlawed such tactics, including Nevada, where authorities recently indicted ACORN on 26 counts of voter registration fraud and 13 counts of illegally compensating canvassers.  Authorities found that ACORN had created a bonus compensation program for any canvasser who registered more than 20 voters per shift, which is illegal under Nevada law.

Currently in Michigan, these tactics remain legal, leaving the door open for ACORN and others to flood our elections system with fraudulent registrations.  Senate Bills 690-695 would close this dangerous loophole, while also making it illegal to pay an individual to register to vote and increasing existing our current small penalties for paying an individual to vote and for knowingly submitting a fraudulent registration.  Unfortunately, these bills have yet to receive even a hearing in the committee they were assigned to five months ago.

Cameron offers a place for you to sign a petition to show your support for the immediate consideration and passage of Senate Bills 690-695.  You can find it at here.

Unhappy With AARP's Support of Health Care Legislation?
60 Plus logoThe AARP, long an advocate group for senior citizens, has recently angered many of its members by giving its official endorsement to the Obama-Reid-Pelosi healthcare reform legislation.  This endorsement caused an immediate backlash and has helped send  AARP's unfavorable rating up to 59% among the  50-64 age group.

The good news is that there are other senior advocate groups out there.  One, 60 Plus, has had its phones ringing non-stop from older Americans looking to join an organization that truly represents their interests.  President Jim Martin remarked on his lack of surprise that AARP, an organization addicted to financial support from the federal government, would side with their benefactors against the interests of the very seniors they claim to represent, "Obamacare doesn't make sense to seniors at 60 Plus, but AARP's endorsement makes a lot of 'cents' to AARP and their corporate bottom line. Clearly the AARP is a FOR-Profit masquerading as a non-profit."

The result is that nearly 70,000 members have quit the AARP since the summer.  Even Senator John McCain has said from the floor of the Senate that now is the time for seniors to make their voice heard and cut up your AARP card!

If you're inclined to join the crowd, check out 60 Plus at their website: www.60plus.org.
