Innovation, Routines, and Transitions
 

We have heard many times that if you keep doing the same things you very well could be falling behind in the marketplace.  Routines are good and having strong fundamentals in place can help you take advantage of an improving economy and defend against a declining economy. Sometimes though, routines can become a weakness where they are resistant to process improvement. What has to happen is you have to create an environment that generates successful innovative routines.

One of the goals of innovation is Positive Change. Innovation can lead to improved productivity, process efficiencies and fundamentally increase wealth for an organization. There are many kinds of innovation such as product, service, position, and process.  The degree of change can be minor, incremental improvements at one end or change can be radical and transform the way we do things.

Studies show that over time incremental change can generate greater gains than one radical change. Radical can be too disruptive or expensive to implement. However, transitioning in small steps routinely can lead an organization within its culture to greater improvements.  This means greater acceptance and less disruption.

Processing Hard-Copy Postage Statements
 
Beginning March 15, 2010 when mail goes to the Business Mail Entry unit with a hard-copy postage statement the process will be different.  BME will round- stamp the document and they will not fill out the USPS section. 
 
Mailers are being encouraged to utilize the Business Customer Gateway at usps.com, access PostalOne to obtain a receipt.  A Statement of Mailing/Weighing & Dispatch Certificate (PS 3607) can be requested after acceptance and verification are completed. 
 
It should be noted that after March 15 the form will be revised and renamed Mailing Transaction Receipt PS 3607R. The verification and resolution process is not changing and you will continue to be notified of any issues.
 
Mailing activity can be viewed on line and electronic options are being encouraged  for submitting postage statements using Postal Wizard, Mail.dat, Mail.XML, or eVS file formt.  Help is at 800-522-9085 or postalone@usps.com.

What do these seemingly different industries have in common?  Digital mail is an outgrowth of the improvements in technology for imaging and emailing mail within an organization. Where an organization uses a central receiving area for mail and then distributes it to various sites using internal couriers this process can be looked at in a different light by centrally imaging and electronically distributing mail as the client desires.

The different classes of mail can be focused more appropriately as needed.  First class and priority mail can be sent immediately.  Mail with a lower importance such as magazines and standard mail can be handled at a lower priority.

Incrementally this change can allow the courier distribution system to focus on packages and other requirements as needed.  Since the changes are done in a controlled and managed process, the organization is able to absorb the changes into its culture and the change can be successful and not disruptive.
