Tracking Postage Costs:
Efficiency at its Best
In today's economy many large businesses want to charge back postage costs to each of their individual departments. Instead of paying for all postage needs out of one centralized account, monthly postage charges for each individual unit or department are tracked throughout the month and billed back to each department. The mailing professionals at OMG utilize the latest in Postal Accounting Software to track all postage expenditures. By assigning each department or unit within an organization a three digit code, we are able to track not only how much funds are spent on postage each month, but also the number of pieces mailed, the class of mail used, and also the mailing category (letters, flats, or parcels). The use of this software allows us to automate a very time consuming process. Instead of attempting to track all of these things manually we are able to utilize the software to export a report electronically each month containing all this information. In addition to the uses stated above, this software possesses additional capabilities. For example, one of our clients, serving as a major health care institution in Cleveland, Ohio, also uses this software to charge back all fees associated with their presort vendor. Through the use of this software, we are able to assign a surcharge to each mail piece metered at the presorted rate. This surcharge allows us to recover the transaction fees added by the presort vendor for each mail piece processed. This prevents the Mail Operations Department's budget from having to absorb all the costs associated with the presort vendor, which can be quite substantial. In conclusion, this is just another example, of how we, the mailing professionals at OMG, are utilizing the latest industry technologies to better serve our clients. | No 2010 Postage Rate Increase:
From the USPS
The Postal Service will not increase prices for market dominant products in calendar year 2010. Simply stated, there will not be a price increase for market dominant products including First-Class Mail, Standard Mail, periodicals, and single-piece Parcel Post. There will be no exigent price increase for these products.
While increasing prices might have generated revenue for the Postal Service in the short term, the long term effect could drive additional mail out of the system. The US Postal Service wants mailers to continue to invest in mail to grow their business, communicate with valued customers, and maintain a strong presence in the marketplace. Changes in pricing for their competitive products-Priority Mail, Express Mail, Parcel Select, and most international products are under consideration. We expect to announce a decision in November.
