We know of two models of the 3M filter, so-called "mid-performance" and "high-performance". A summary of the 3M data reveals the following:
The Koch XL8-HC and XL11-HC offer lower resistance to airflow and lower pressure drop. Lower ∆P means lower energy costs, a huge factor considering the high energy costs all of us face these days.
The Koch XL8-HC and XL11-HC offer higher Dust Holding Capacity. According to 3M's published sales information, a 24x24x2 "Commercial High Performance HVAC Filter" only 69 grams of dust (+/- 6 grams), compared to 219 grams in the Koch XL11-HC. Dust Holding Capacity can directly impact filter lifecycle.
Tests show the Koch XL8-HC and XL11-HC can offer higher efficiency in real world conditions. As the electrostatic charge on the 3M filters dissipates, a notable drop in efficiency will occur. Koch's XL8-HC and XL11-HC are also constructed with an electrostatically-charged media. However, the Koch media is made with a patented process which generates a controlled gradient structure, with fiber density increasing from the upstream to the downstream side. This process, combined with a proprietary electrostatic treating technology, enable the XL8-HC and XL11-HC to achieve high initial - and more sustainable - filtration efficiencies.
The Koch XL8-HC and XL11-HC are priced lower than the 3M filters. Prices on the 3M product will vary from market to market, but we've seen the filter selling to the end-user for $30 and up, compared to $5-$9 for our 2" Multi-Pleat XL8-HC (MERV 8) or XL11-HC (MERV 11). (Depending on size).
As is the case with any filter, local conditions may impact the results of our estimated comparisons. But, as the data illustrates, the Koch XL8-HC and XL11-HC generally offer lower pressure drop, higher efficiencies, and more competitive pricing when matched up against comparable 3M models. We hope you'll find this information useful in your sales efforts. If you need further information please don't hesitate to contact your Regional Sales Manager.
Thanks for your continuing business!
