Greetings!

Believe it or not, it is December 2011 and I am trying to remember how this year went by so fast! It has been a very exciting year at the Home Office with everyone cross-training, taking on new responsibilities and learning new skills. We are becoming more efficient than ever before all in the name of better serving you, our Members and working toward better marketing GWRRA in the world economy.

It has also been a great year for me personally and as the year comes to an end, I sit here counting all my blessings knowing that GWRRA, my extended family and my natural family have been my joy and pleasure. I have seen GWRRA grow from a few hundred people back when I was a volunteer at Wing Ding 1 to over 70,000 Members in 55 countries today. It has been my honor to have served in many positions from a volunteer to the 1st CD in Colorado in 1980, to their DD, to Executive Director, to Marketing Director, to a Board Member, and I will never forget how all these positions have taught me so much. Now, I look toward to my retirement at the end of this year and being able to have the time to travel and visit more of my GWRRA Friends & Family, Chapters and events throughout the world.

I want to publicly thank Paul Hildebrand, who not only started GWRRA back in 1977, but also has given me, as well as many people in GWRRA, the opportunity to learn and grow with GWRRA. The opportunities availed to me by him, by asking me to start a Chapter in Colorado and then becoming GWRRA's Exec., were nothing short of an advanced degree in Association Management and allowing me to grow professionally and personally in many, many ways. I know for many of you who have also joined our Officer ranks, can attest to the same process. Those who take advantage of the opportunities to get involved with any of GWRRA's Programs will grow and learn and can take these skills to their professional and personal lives.  And knowing him as I do, I know one of his biggest goals was to SAVE LIVES and he has certainly attained that goal. So, THANK YOU PAUL, for your vision and for your willingness to allow us to share your dream!

I will still be kept on as a consultant, to write the Wingin' It, so please keep sending me your articles and stories. We need your feedback to keep this e-newsletter going each month, and now that I will be working from home and on the road, it will be more than critical that you assist me. Help me help GWRRA, with your positive experiences of your Chapter, travelogues, our programs, Gold Book stories, helpful Dealers and fellow Members, etc.

Check our our newest Business Member and featured Business of the Month in the left column below, as well as our Featured Member Benefit of the Month.

Choosing Your Boots Wisely

When selecting a pair of boots for riding a motorcycle, one must take into consideration both comfort and safety.  As soon as you have chosen an appropriate pair of boots, you will discover you will not want to ride without them. They are crucial in shielding your feet, ankles and lower legs. In our one major accident, after being cut off in Dallas, Texas, the surgeon working on my wife's ankle injury stated that had she not been wearing the type of boot she was wearing, she most likely would have lost her foot. Those boots were the heavy, well constructed type. We both wear this style boot for maximum protection. If we are going to do a lot of walking after reaching our destination, we pack a pair of comfortable walking shoes to change into upon arrival. Full Story >

It's hard to believe, but 2011 is coming to an end and it's time for the most glorious holiday season of all to begin. If we look back to the events of this year, we find it hard to believe the things that have taken place. We begin in our own neighborhood where a child was born premature and has little chance of a living a healthy life. While others are going about their everyday lives, he struggles and tries to hold on. The touch of love throughout our neighborhood has given this family strength and encouragement.

In other areas, destruction has taken place with storms, floods and other disasters resulting in the loss of personal belongings. Losing loved ones, health, jobs, homes, and other possessions, people are left to wonder what to do or how to start over. With each struggle, we somehow find our way, maybe not as before, but struggling each day we continue on. We get our strength from our faith and our family.   We are so blessed that we have family all across this great nation. Full Story >

As we sit at the keyboard preparing to write our holiday message, it is almost a week before the Thanksgiving holiday here in the States. We have a lot to be thankful for.

Halloween marked our 33rd wedding anniversary. It is hard to believe that another year is going by so quickly. We were that couple in high school they said would never last. Part of the Treat, that final October day, was taking over the caretaking of the GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) after experiencing 17 years as Members. We owe retiring International Rider Education Directors, Gene and Betty Knutson, a great big THANK YOU for all their hard work, growing and improving the REP, for everyone during their time at the helm. We were honored to be selected to carry on their work in service to the membership. Full Story >

 GWRRA's New

Global Affairs Directors

After many years of wonderful service, longtime Global Affairs Director, Peter Russell, is stepping down. Replacing him will be Dan and Rachel Sanderovich.

Says Dan: "Both Rachel and I are very honored and excited to step into our friend, Peter Russell's, position as your new GWRRA Global Affairs Directors.

Rachel and I live in Israel, have been married for 34 years and have five children and three grandchildren. In regard to motorcycling, I have been riding for more than 35 years; however, it was only six years ago-after I bought my first Gold Wing (a Yellow 2002 GL1800)-that I learned about GWRRA during a visit to Americade in Lake George, New York. WEST WE GO!

A View from the Back

By Cindy Culp

(Most motorcycle travelogues are written from the perspective of the rider. This one is from the perspective of the pillion, though I occasionally toss my thoughts in as well. - Jim Culp)

Tornados had just ripped through the south, devastating Tuscaloosa and the southeast, and the Mississippi River was flooding. Was it a sign of things to come or just a sign that you have to be flexible when taking a motorcycle trip out west?

Once you get an idea in your head, like riding out to see the Grand Canyon and visiting as many National Parks as possible via motorcycle, it's hard to get it out of your head. So our motorcycle journey begins. Full Story >

MEMBER'S FEEDBACK:

by

Stacy Valeu, GWRRA Member #310943

Dear Sir,

My two cents worth.  I started riding Harley's in '1949 when my dad allowed me to purchase a WW-II 125 mail bike.  It had rubber bands that looked like V-belts.  Then, I had an Indian Scout and then, my first NEW purchase was a 1961 Sportster.  Actually, I started riding doodle bugs first!  Remember them?

When I first learned of Honda, the fellow tried to stay up with us on a Dream.  Regretfully, we made a lot of fun of him, but he always caught up and was there at the end of the day.  My wife and I have had Yamaha dirt bikes, a 650cc Yamaha street bike and she had a Yamaha 200cc street.  All the years I rode to the Peoria TT races, the Springfield Mile, etc., I could never understand why the Harley riders always wanted to put on this persona of "Hardcore". WW media headerMotowings is a division of Image Marketing Corp. We are a small business owned by a dedicated Valkyrie rider. Motowings are made to fill a need for a sturdy air deflector that adds a bit of pizzazz.

Motowings are air deflectors for Gold Wings and other motorcycles.  They are available as full sets with mounting hardware or replacement panels for Baker Airwings.  We use Baker hardware and are an authorized Baker Built dealer.  We use extra thick 3/16" acrylic to prevent cracking or breaking.  Our panels are available in Dark Smoke or Clear acrylic.  Since they are laser cut, not only are they precision made, but we can produce panels with flamed edges as well as the standard rectangular no flame panels.  As a new Member of GWRRA we look forward to being of service to Gold Wing riders. Visit us at motowing.com for full info. (See special offer for GWRRA Members on side ad.)
