MistletoeHomeopathic Remedies Do Work to Kill Breast Cancer Cells; Breakthrough Research
mango largeA new study, just published in the International Journal of Oncology, reveals that homeopathic remedies have a beneficial effect on breast cancer cells.

The study, which was done in Houston Texas, shows that certain homeopathic remedies have preferentially elevated cytotoxic (killing) effects on breast cancer cells - compared with cells derived from normal breast epithelium.

The team of researchers commented that the homeopathic remedies appeared to have similar activity to the activity of paclitaxel (Taxol), the most commonly used chemotherapeutic drug for breast cancer, without the toxic effect on the normal cells.

The experiments were conducted in triplicate and repeated at least twice for each remedy.  The homeopathic medicines tested included:  Carcinosin, 30C; Conium maculatum, 3C; Phytolacca decandra, 200C and Thuja occidentalis, 30C. The most effective remedies were found to be Carcinosin and Phytolacca.

The researchers concluded, "the ultra-diluted natural homeopathic remedies investigated in this study offer the promise of being effective preventive and/or therapeutic agents for breast cancer and worthy of further study."

This is the first scientific study that investigated the effect of homeopathic remedies on breast cancer cells.

Dana Ullman, one of the best known writers on homeopathy stated: "This study raises the exciting possibility of a window of therapeutic opportunity for preferentially eliminating breast cancer cells with minimal damage to the surrounding normal mammary tissue by using homeopathic remedies".

sweetenersIt's "Official" - Marijuana Has Therapeutic Value

marijuanaIn a report to the Californian government last week, researchers - who have completed 5 scientific clinical trials - have found "reasonable evidence that cannabis is a promising treatment" for some specific, pain-related medical conditions - including easing pain in selected syndromes caused by injury or diseases of the nervous system and possibly for painful muscle spasms due to multiple sclerosis.

Lead researcher Igor Grant, explained, "These findings provide a strong, science-based context in which policy makers and the public can begin discussing the place of cannabis in medical care."

Promoting Increased Social Interaction in Autistic Patients - with the "Love Hormone" (Oxytocin) oxytocin
oxytocin
A recent study has tested the effects of giving people with autistim oxytocin (the "love hormone") to inhale. The results indicate that after inhalation, patients react more strongly to other people - as they exhibited stronger interactions with the most socially co-operative partner in a game and reported enhanced feelings of trust and preference. Also, during free viewing of pictures of faces, those using oxytocin selectively increased their "gazing time" on the socially informative region of the face, namely the eyes.

Adding Rosemary to Beef Decreases Cancer-Causing Side Effects of Cooking b31
rosemary
Researchers at Kansas State University have found that adding rosemary extract to beef reduces the levels of cancer-causing agents (heterocyclic amines (HCAs ) that are produced in the cooking process.

They studied 5 different extracts of rosemary - with different concentrations of ethanol and water - and found that while all worked - the most effective results came from the lower concentrations (containing mixtures of  rosmarinic acid, carnosol and carnosic acid).
Orange Is Not the Only Colour: Purple, Red, Yellow and White Carrots Show Different Nutritional Resultsmeditation1
carrots
Orange carrots were developed in The Netherlands in the 18th century. Before that the first descriptions of carrots from the Middle East (around 1000 AD) described them as purple and yellow.

There have also been white (Europe) and red (China) carrots. While orange carrots have become the standard in the West there are still some places in the world where purple and yellow carrots continue to be eaten.

Researchers are now studying the different nutritional values of the different coloured carrots - claiming that different coloured carrots have different nutritional benefits. Click here to read more
A Safe Way to Remove Metal Toxicity  - Including in Pets and Horsesdepression1
kittenResearch has shown that there is a natural way to remove the heavy metals that many people have stored in their bodies (e.g. lead, aluminium, arsenic, mercury, uranium and cadmium) in order to reduce the likelihood of developing various degenerative diseases from this "trapped" toxicity.

Pollution from these chemicals is almost unavoidable for most people as they are caused by contact with and a whole range of chemicals used in everyday life - from chemicals used in our cars, offices and homes, even from chemicals used on such innocuous items as carpets, furniture fabrics, cushions and linens.  They are likely to cause cancer and function as hormone disruptors, adversely affecting reproduction and thyroid hormone function.

Whilst this research has been available since 2007, researchers now believe that the new natural formulations that are available on the market are equally effective in removing harmful toxins from animals - who are also in danger of suffering from the same types of degenerative diseases that these heavy metals cause in humans.

New research is showing that pets and horses are equally as toxic as humans and this is why they suffer from similar degenerative diseases. As animals have very sensitive endocrine systems they are often even more intolerant to toxins than humans. Environmental factors are a major cause of such toxins. This has been substantiated by World Wildlife Foundation research and reported at length on the WWF internet sites.

Pets can also become toxic from their environment as often they are in contact with various paints, varnishes and other chemicals in the house, including brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Pet food is another source of toxicity, as a substantial amount of toxins, especially heavy metals, are present in canned food. Dried food can contain harmful chemicals used as a preservative. Furthermore, fish used by several manufacturers have high levels of toxins, particularly mercury.

The new generation of detox treatments is only available in the UK from HMD, including an HMD4PETS version.
Untreated 'Poor Vision' in Older People - Far More Likely to Lead to Alzheimerspoison
vision chart
A new study to be printed in the American Journal of Epidemiology, undertaken by the University of Michigan discovered that elderly people with visual disorders that are left untreated are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease - the most common form of dementia.

The study shows that those with poor vision who did visit an ophthalmologist at least once for an examination were 64% less likely to develop dementia and points to poor vision as a predictor of dementia rather than as a symptom after the diagnosis.
The ability to see properly is seen as a crucial factor in allowing elderly people to get involved in those key activities that are known to help in lowering the risks of Alzheimers - activities like reading, playing board games, mentally stimulating activities, social networking and physical activity such as walking and routine exercising.

Lead researcher Mary Rogers explains: "Visual problems can have serious consequences and are very common among the elderly, but many of them are not seeking treatment. Our results indicate that it is important for elderly individuals with visual problems to seek medical attention so that the causes of the problems can be identified and treated."

The types of treatment that were helpful in lowering the risk of dementia were surgery to correct cataracts and treatments for glaucoma, retinal disorders and other eye-related problems. Click here to read more
Third-Hand Cancer Smoking Hazards Identified   fryingpan

A recent study has shown the dangers that "residual nicotine" from tobacco smoke can cause when it binds to indoor surfaces and reacts with ambient nitrous acid (HONO) to form carcinogenic tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs).

Substantial levels of these TSNAs were measured on surfaces inside a smoker's vehicle. When they tested for these substances in a laboratory environment where the environment was exposed to secondhand smoke, they found a 10-fold increase in these carcinogenic substances . Click here to read more
Sea Sponge Molecule (Sceptrin)  Inhibits Cancer Cell Metastasischinese1
spongeA team from the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute have discovered that a natural compound (sceptrin) found in sea sponges, has the ability to reduce the ability of cancer cells to move around the body. The substance also has a low toxicity level.

This ability to slow down the metastasis of cancer, is seen as an important step towards advancing cancer treatments.

The research, published online in ACS Chemical Biology journal, showed that sceptrin works by restricting the cell's ability to contract - a crucial factor in allowing it to move around - and that it worked on a variety of cancer cell tumours - including cervical, breast and lung cancers.

A quick update on Flu...
A: BIRD FLU Hasn't Disappeared Yet...
The WHO confirmed two cases of Bird Flu (H5N1) in Egypt last week - both patients were exposed to sick and dead poultry. One of these cases resulted in the death of a 29 year old Egyptian woman (Feb 15th 2010). It comes as Egypt is continuing to battle the H1N1, or swine flu, and has repeatedly said they expect a rise in infections in March. The woman, who was pregnant, became ill 9 days before and was admitted to a local hospital and given Tamiflu.

The other case is of a 32-year-old man. Some reports claim he has also passed away, whilst others say he is still being treated. They are the 98th and 99th reported cases in Egypt. (Worldwide the WHO claim there have been just 478 cases of confirmed Bird Flu since its outbreak in 2003; of these 286 people have died).

B: And It's Still Killing People in Indonesia
Indonesia has had more confirmed Bird Flu cases than any other country (163) - with more deaths (135) and their Ministry of Health has just announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 25-year-old woman from South Jakarta has died (25th January 2010).

C: How Flu Thrives in Your Cells
Researchers have identified the 295 individual cell factors in your body that a Flu virus (influenza A) has to 'harness' in order to infect your body's cells. The research published in the journal 'Nature', explains how the researchers selectively 'turned off' more than 19,000 human genes in order to identify these 295 key cell factors. They also found small molecule compounds that can inhibit viral replication.

Mental Illness Breakthrough: Fish Oil (Omega 3) Prevents Psychotic Disorderslove1

fish oil capsulesA study from the American Chemical Society,  just published in  the Archives of General Psychiatry shows that patients at a high risk of developing a psychosis were far less likely to develop a psychosis when they were given fish oils - high in omega-3 fatty acids  - than those given a placebo treatment in a 1 year study.

Seventy six participants completed the study - with 41 in the test group and 40 in the placebo group. Only 2 individuals in the test group went on to develop a psychotic disorder, while 11 from the placebo group developed one.

The authors (from the Medical University of Vienna  and the Orygen Youth Health Research Center in Melbourne) hold out great hope for this non-drug related approach, especially for its use in the early stages of schizophrenia,: "Early treatment in schizophrenia and other psychoses has been linked to better outcomes... in at-risk individuals (and) holds the promise of even better outcomes, with the potential to prevent full-blown psychotic disorders."

Official Recommended Intake for Vitamin D is Too Low
Due to current lifestyles in the United States, most people do not spend sufficient time in the sun to produce the higher serum D levels associated with optimal health. Black-Americans are particularly vulnerable to low levels due to their darker skin, which reduces the amount of UVB that reaches the 7-dehydrocholesterol in the lower epidermis to produce previtamin D. Black-Americans have a 25% higher mortality rate than White-Americans, and this difference may be explained in terms of lower serum 25(OH)D levels.

Complementary & Alternative Medicine: The Scientific Verdict on what Really Works, written by Dr Steve Bratman and edited by Jayney Goddard is an enormous collection of scientific trials across the field of Complementary Medicine and Natural HealthCare.  Jayney Goddard says: "In order to edit Dr Bratman's excellent work I had to look at the results of over 10,000 trials - the vast majority of which were RCTs.  It was painstaking work but a very useful addition to the current literature in the complementary medical field.  This book makes those thousands of trials accessible to all readers with even a basic understanding of the tenets of complementary medicine.  It is, however, particularly useful to CAM practitioners and students and also to conventional medics who would like to know more about the evidence base for CAM."
