Mango effective in preventing, stopping certain colon, breast cancer cells
Although mangoes have always been seen as a healthy fruit to eat - and in Ayurvedic medicine ripe mangoes are seen as balancing all three doshas - there has been a limited number of research programmes on their potential medical properties. Mango contains what are seen to be the 'anti-oxidant' vitamins ....... Read rest of article

No More World Records for Athletes?
Following a study of 41,351 best performers from 70 track and field (T&F) and swimming events around the world - between 1896 and 2007 ("the Modern Olympic Era") a study by a group of French mathematicians has indicated that we may no longer be treated to seeing a World Record broken in the Olympic Pool, or on the Track - as we start to get towards the human limitations of athletes and swimmers.

Vitamin D - AND - Calcium Required to Ease Brittle Bone Problems in Older People
Researchers at Copenhagen University together with others from UC Davis in Sacramento have just analysed the results of seven worldwide clinical trials in order to assess whether supplementing with vitamin D could reduce fractures in older people. They reported that there were no significant results amongst those people who only took a vitamin D supplement, but that there were improvements in those who took vitamin D and calcium.
The lead author states: "This study supports a growing consensus that combined calcium and vitamin D is more effective than vitamin D alone in reducing a variety of fractures. Interestingly, this combination of supplements benefits both women and men of all ages, which is not something we fully expected to find. We now need to investigate the best dosage, duration and optimal way for people to take it."

400,000 Homeopaths in India
An industry report in 2009 said that by this year the domestic homeopathy market is expected to more than double and touch the £325m. It was then predicted to grow at a rate of between 25-30% - against a growth of 13-15% for the pharmaceuticals industry.
A Senior Medical Officer, in the Delhi Government, said, "The demand for homeopathic and ayurvedic medicines has increased in the last few years and to cure chronic ailments such as respiratory diseases, fevers, skin diseases, viral infections, asthma and allergic disorders, people are choosing the traditional way of treatment before allopathic."
As for Ayurvedic medicine, a spokesman from the Department of Diabetes and Metabolism, Fortis Group of Hospitals explained: "The demand for Ayurvedic medicines has increased in the last five years to more than £375m, as they have started marketing their products in a better manner and also conducted scientific trials to prove the permanent cure of some diseases."
According to the World Health Organisation, more than one billion people use herbal medicines and in India more than 65 per cent people living in the rural areas use Ayurveda and medical plants to meet their primary health care needs. Click here for more information

"To - Whit: To - Who?" .....Owls Communicate More, in Increased Moonlight
A recent study from the a number of academics based in universities in Spain, Finland and Portugal has found that moonlight means that owls talk to each other more - or they certainly communicate more. Seen as a study into the wider aspects of nocturnal behaviour of various creatures on earth, the researchers found that eagle owls (Bubo bubo) communicate using a patch of white throat plumage that is repeatedly exposed during each call and is only visible during vocal displays. These call displays are directly influenced by the amount of moonlight, with silent nights being more frequent during periods with no-moonlight than moonlight.

The Ancient Egyptians' Black Eye Liner Was a Medicinal Compound of 'Low-Dilution' of Lead
A new study using an analytical chemical approach has discovered that the (green and) black eye make-up used in ancient Egypt, was used for medicinal purposes.
They say these were made up of essential remedies for treating eye illness - and skin complaints - and that the two key chemicals used were both purposely synthesized compounds of lead. By using ultra-microelectrodes, the researchers were able to obtain new insights into the biochemical interactions between lead(II) ions and cells, which support the ancient medical use of sparingly soluble lead compounds.
They found that sub-micromolar concentrations of Pb2+ ions were shown to be sufficient for eliciting specific oxidative stress responses of keratinocytes (an overproduction of nitrogen monoxide (NO°)).
So, just as the original medicinal use of vaccination can be traced back to ancient Egypt, they believe that these lead substances were used in order stimulate the user's immune system to respond - and 'cure' the eye, or skin illness.

Latest Attacks on Homeopathy
Another campaigning group ("10:23"), spawned by the Merseyside Skeptics Society - (supporters of 'Sense about Science' and of the campaigning creationist from Texas, Don McLeroy), has organised a number of 'demonstrations' outside Boots branches in the UK (January 30th) - and, so they say, around the world. In order to get media coverage they are organising demonstrators to drink 'large quantities of homeopathic fluids' - in order to show that these substances are so weak that they won't have any effect.
These campaigners are attempting to get the NHS to reduce what they call a £4m annual spend on homeopathic remedies. The Health Minister, speaking to the Science and Technology select committee in November last year, explained that the total spend on homeopathic medicines by the NHS is just £152,000 (out of a total drugs budget of £11 billion).
At that hearing, the Health Minister . . . Read rest of the article here Back to top

Six Deadly Chemicals You - and Everyone Else - Have in Your System
A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US has found that every one of the 212 chemicals they tested for - was present in most Americans. Six that were deemed to be special health hazards were found in almost all Americans.
The six 'deadly chemicals' were polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PDEs), bisphenol A (BPA), Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), acrylamide, mercury, and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE).
PDE's are flame retardant chemicals added to lots of products all around us......

Non-stick Chemicals (PFOA) Linked to Thyroid Disease in Women
In a recent study from Exeter University, and published in the February Issue of Environmental Health Perspectives researchers say that those women whose blood concentrations of PFOA (perfluoro-octanoic acid ), were in the 25% sampled were around twice as likely to have thyroid diseases than those in the bottom 25%.
(See previous article: remember PFOA has recently been found in almost ALL Americans (CDC)).

Positive Focus On The Latest Biological Models of Homeopathy
In a two-part special issue, the journal Homeopathy highlights experiments on homeopathic treatments in biological models and includes new findings in biosystems, ranging from whole animal behavioral, intoxication and inflammation models through diseased and healthy plant models, to test tube experiments using isolated cells, cell cultures or enzymes.
Featured articles include one on the basophil degranulation test, a test tube model of allergy, systematic reviews of healthy and diseased plant models and experimental work on the effect of homeopathic arsenic on wheat seedlings. There are reviews of mouse and rat models of homeopathic responses and a review, including original results of animal models of homeopathic treatment of anxiety-like behaviours.
Other articles focus on the basic concept of homeopathy 'like cures like'.
Editor-in-Chief Dr Peter Fisher commented: 'Throughout its 200 year history, claims that homeopathy has 'real' (as opposed to placebo) effects have been hotly contested. Our special issue brings together a wide range of scientific work in biological systems, where there can be no placebo effect, showing that there are now several biological experiments which yield consistently positive results with homeopathic dilutions'.

Stress Peptide and Receptor May Have Role in Diabetes
Researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have found that CRF (the neuropeptide, corticotropin-releasing factor) increases insulin secretion and promotes the division of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. These findings, they say, may provide new insights into diabetes, particularly type 1, as well as suggest novel targets for intervention.
CRF's leading role in the body is at the start of the stress response, where it jump-starts the process along the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

Ancient Chinese Remedy - 'Dung of the Devil' - Useful Against Swine Flu?
A study just published in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Natural Products, shows that a Chinese plant known as asafoetida (Ferula assafoetida) - that has been used traditionally to treat a range of ailments from colds and flu to epilepsy, bronchitis and asthma - may be of more use in treating swine flu than the drug adamantine. It is considered an antimicrobial and digestive aid, and has also been traditionally used as a contraceptive and abortifacient. The researchers noted that more than 230 medicinal compounds have been identified in plants of the ferula genus.

Mango effective in preventing, stopping certain colon, breast cancer cells (continued).....
Mango contains what are seen to be the 'anti-oxidant' vitamins A, C and E, as well as vitamins B6, and K, plus other B vitamins. It also contains various phytonutrients, prebiotic fibres, carotenoids (such as beta-carotene, lutein, alpha-carotene), omegas 3 and 6, polyphenols (such as quercetin, kaempferol, gallic acid, caffeic acid, catechins) and dietary minerals such as potassium and copper - as well as 17 amino acids.
Whilst it was already known that the triterpene, lupeol from mangoes[1] is an effective inhibitor in laboratory models of prostate and skin cancers,[2][3][4] and that Vimang - an extract of mango branch bark (isolated by Cuban scientists) - contains numerous polyphenols with antioxidant properties in vitro[5] and on blood parameters of older people [6], the National Mango Board in the US, have started to fund further research. In one recent study scientists from Texas AgriLife Research have found that Mango extracts prevent or stop certain colon and breast cancer cells in the lab. Lead by a husband and wife team, Drs Suzanne and Steve Talcott, the researchers reported that: "What we found is that not all cell lines are sensitive to the same extent to an anticancer agent," she said. "But the breast and colon cancer lines underwent apotosis, or programmed cell death. Additionally, we found that when we tested normal colon cells side by side with the colon cancer cells, that the mango polyphenolics did not harm the normal cells." The Talcotts have evaluated polyphenolics from a number of fruits, and say that it is the gallotannins, which are the key class of bioactive compounds that are responsible for preventing or stopping cancer cells.

No More World Records for Athletes? (continued.....)
The improvements in performance in the swimming, running and other track events have slowed down significantly - to the extent where they predict that new breakthroughs may be slow in coming - and then only down to the use of improved technology (like the now-banned swimsuits), or due to an exceptional physical specimen emerging in an event.
The study has an amazing number of graphs to fascinate even the casual reader, and it certainly does imply, reading between the lines, that many world records might have been achieved with the help of various drugs.

Ancient Chinese Remedy - 'Dung of the Devil' - Useful Against Swine Flu? (...continued.....)
Because of its foul smelling sap, asafoetida, is known colloquially as 'Dung of the Devil', and, according to this study by researchers from Kaohsiung Medial University in Taiwan the herbal medicine proved more effective at killing H1N1 in the laboratory than the prescription drug, adamantine.
The researchers point out: "The present study has determined that sesquiterpene coumarins from asafoetida may serve as promising lead components for new drug development against influenza A (H1N1) viral infection." wrote.
The study was funded by the Taiwanese National Science Council and Department of Health. For more information click here

Latest Attacks on Homeopathy (...continued.....)
At that hearing, the Health Minister told them that there is no justification for cutting funding for homeopathy on the NHS and that a significant number of people believe it works.
Mr O'Brien said cutting the funding would be "illiberal" and "a denial of personal choice" and that there is "a significant body of clinicians who take a view that [homeopathy] works". He told the committee that there was "justification for more research" in homeopathy and stated that it is up to individual clinicians to decide on the best treatment for their patients and that it was not his job to tell GPs whether or not to prescribe homeopathy.
The Chief Executive of the British Homeopathic Association commented: "Homeopathy only works on particular symptoms, so the idea that they can prove any point with a fake overdose just highlights the ignorance of the protesters. There's a growing body of evidence that homeopathy works. The majority of clinical trials have been positive rather than negative."
A spokesman for Boots added: "Homeopathy is recognised by the NHS and many health professionals and our customers choose to use homeopathy. Boots UK is committed to providing our customers with a wide range of healthcare products to suit their individual needs, we know that many people believe in the benefits of complementary medicines and we aim to offer the products we know our customers want."

Six Deadly Chemicals You - and Everyone Else - Have in Your System
PDE's are flame retardant chemicals added to lots of products all around us. They cause damage to our livers, kidneys and to our nervous system (including brain disorders) and are found in human fat tissue. They are implicated in thyroid dysfunction and sexual dysfunction as well.
We have covered the damage caused by Bisphenol A (BPA), several times in the last year and is another product that is all around us, in plastic water bottles, cans (linings), most plastic products, etc, etc. Mini particles of it have been found in the middle of the Pacific (North pacific Gyre) and on snow taken from the top of remote mountains. The list of problems BPA causes is similar to that of PDE's.
PFOA is used in 'heat-resistant' products and can be found in some food packaging and non-stick cookware. It is linked to various immune system problems, liver dysfunction and infertility. (See next article).
Acrylamide is forms a carcinogenic compound when carbohydrate foods are cooked at high temperatures and is also used in plastics, cosmetics and water treatment products. It causes brain disorders and cancer.
Mercury damages the central nervous system, endocrine system, kidneys, and other organs, and adversely affects the mouth, gums, and teeth. Exposure over long periods of time or heavy exposure to mercury vapour can result in brain damage and ultimately death.
MTBE can be found in cigarette smoke and has been used as a petrol additive. It causes infertility and brain disease.

The Evidence YOU Need!
Complementary & Alternative Medicine: The Scientific Verdict on what Really Works, written by Dr Steve Bratman and edited by Jayney Goddard is an enormous collection of scientific trials across the field of Complementary Medicine and Natural HealthCare. Jayney Goddard says: "In order to edit Dr Bratman's excellent work I had to look at the results of over 10,000 trials - the vast majority of which were RCTs. It was painstaking work but a very useful addition to the current literature in the complementary medical field. This book makes those thousands of trials accessible to all readers with even a basic understanding of the tenets of complementary medicine. It is, however, particularly useful to CAM practitioners and students and also to conventional medics who would like to know more about the evidence base for CAM."
