Are You Struggling to Build YOUR Practice?
CMA Business DevelopmentTimes are pretty hard now given the doom, gloom and despondency that we read about in the media regarding the credit crunch. However, this may not be all bad news for practitioners. Research shows that during times of recession a counter-intuitive phenomenon can occur: People re-assess their lives and spending patterns- redefining what they see as necessities - and this can include CAM treatments.  To help practitioners through these potentially hard times Jayney Goddard is running a series of workshops on "Developing YOUR Professional Practice".  Click here to find our more - and to see what delegates have to say about these inspirational workshops.

A 'New' Ailment 'Discovered'!  Thank Goodness Big Pharma Has the Answer

eye jayney goddardA new medical breakthrough has been approved By The FDA in America; Eyelash Thickener

The FDA has just approved a new drug (LatisseTM) for - thickening your eyelashes!
This drug has been developed in order to help treat 'thin eyelash disorder (Hypotrichosis). It is the first and only FDA-approved pharmaceutical "to enhance eyelash prominence".

The Vice President of Allergan, the company who developed this new drug said "Today's Advisory Committee recommendation is an important step in the FDA review process to provide consumers with a safe and effective treatment to improve the length, thickness and darkness of natural eyelashes."
Acupuncture Wins the Battle in Iraq?

Fighter PlanesThe US Air Force have just begun training their doctors in what they call "Battlefield Acupuncture". In tests the approach developed under the guidance of Dr Niemtzow has proved successful in relieving severe pain. The first trained physicians will be going to Iraq and Afghanistan in the next few months.
This 'new' acupuncture - which the military will only allowed to be administered by "a licenced physician - trained at a conventional medical school" - is "based on neurophysiological concepts" - and is claimed to be a variation on standard acupuncture as it involves "inserting very tiny, semi-permanent needles into very specific acupoints in the ear - to block pain signals from reaching the brain."
The military are excited that this 'new' approach will save on the need for pain medication - and all the side effects they might cause, such as addiction or adverse reactions - as well as be easy to use in field/ battle situations.
Dr Niemtzow explained that "This is one of the fastest pain attenuators in existence..... (as).... the pain can be gone in five minutes."

Superfoods1.       Cooked - rather than - Fresh Tomatoes - especially "Tomato Paste"?
A recent study in the Journal of Cancer Research in the US has reported that cooked tomatoes are better at protecting against cancer cell replication than fresh tomatoes for, and that tomato paste is especially effective. Valeri V. Mossine, the biochemist and lead author of this study at the University of Missouri said, "It appears the greatest protective effect from tomatoes comes by rehydrating tomato powder into tomato paste."

2.       A Hot Curry - or, rather Turmeric.
As anyone who has read the key Chapter on "Which Herbs Should I take?" from "The Survivor's Guide To Bird Flu: The Complementary Medical Approach" - will already know, one of the most effective 'medical' herbs is Turmeric. And this year has been shown, yet again, to be effective in its ability to reduce the risk and symptoms of cancer, Alzheimer's disease and a category of strokes caused by high blood pressure.
Recent research from the University of Alabama reported that Turmeric slows pancreatic cancer, one of the more aggressive types, and another study out of The Medical College of Georgia shows that Turmeric can reduce hemorrhagic strokes.

3.       Goji Berries/Goji Juice:
Has been getting rave reviews from everyone - especially as it now has "proper" research behind it!  In a random, control, double-blind trial, published in the US Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Those taking goji juice for two weeks reported increased ratings for energy, sleep quality, mental acuity, calmness and contentment compared to the control group.
What makes this study so important is that, despite all the many research studies that have been undertaken on the medicinal effectiveness of Goji berries - this one is "the first study outside China".  (Oh, the arrogance of Western science!)

4.       A glass of Beetroot Juice a day.........
Researchers at the London School of Medicine showed that a daily intake of beet juice appears to reduce high blood pressure (March issue; Hypertension journal).

5.       Rosemary?
Another 'featured' herb in "The Survivor's Guide To Bird Flu" has now been seen to significantly reduce the risk of carcinogenic compounds forming in beef that is grilled or otherwise charred at high temperatures, when it is added to 'dry rubs', or marinades. (Kansas State).

6.       A Healthy Glass - or two - of Red Wine
Another special herb found in "The Survivor's Guide To Bird Flu", is Resveratrol, a substance found in the grapes of red wine. Resveratrol has been shown to be a potent anti-fungal compound and antioxidant and has been the subject of several research studies. It is now one of the focal herbs that Big Pharma is spending lots of research money on - looking at its metabolites, in the hope to patent a derivative of it as weight loss drug, a diabetes drugs, and a new generation of anti-ageing medicines.
More good news about resveratrol comes from a  study by Cornell University scientists recently published in the journal Neurochemistry International It found that Resveratrol, a polyphenol found in red wine, peanuts and pomegranates, could help treat neurodegenerative diseases. In an animal study, the scientists fed Resveratrol for forty-five days to mice with Alzheimer's type plaques in their brains. The result? The polyphenol diminished plaque formation. This supports the idea, the researchers concluded, that neurodegenerative diseases may be delayed or mitigated with use of dietary agents such as Resveratrol.

Unfortunately, even if you are a lover of red wine, you could never drink enough to get the full benefit of Resveratrol - and you will need to take it in supplement form - 'as well'.

FlatleyLord of the Dance - Once Again!
acupunctureIn a surprising start to the New Year, Michael Flatley hit international headlines when he revealed that bio-energy therapy had been the key to his recovery after a "mystery virus" has proved uncurable by conventional medicine.

The Riverdance star had been struck down in the middle of a tour in 2006 with fatigue and muscle pain. Months of medical intervention and bedrest did not provide relief. It looked as though Flatley's high-octane dancing days were over.

However, a recommendation to visit Irish Healer, Michael O'Doherty in Ennis, County Clare proved to be the path to recovery. Using techniques developed as part of the Plexus Bio-energy system, O'Doherty was able to help the star to walk again after just one session and in 10 sessions, Flatley was ready to be back on stage. He is now the host of NBC's Superstars of Dance show in the USA.

Plexus Bio-Energy was developed in Ireland by Michael O'Doherty and Tom Griffin. It uses a system of hand movements to diagnose any blockages in a person's energy field, whilst also rebalancing them. Although not widely accepted by current medical science, this system is showing astonishing results in cases where conventional therapies have failed. The system has gained the interest of research scientists in the USA who are looking to investigate the effects of Plexus bio-energy on PET scans of the brain.
