Whenever contention (passion, envy, covetousness) arises, somewhere behind it, there is pride.  Somehow we always want to put out a better impression than someone else. And anything or anyone that tarnishes that impression, causes contention within us. But those that are humble and peaceable are wise and well advised. They will ask and take advice; they will consult their own consciences, their Bibles, their pastors, their friends, and will do nothing rashly.  They will humble themselves,and even stoop and yield, to preserve quietness and prevent quarrels.
