Summer Workshop Extravaganza!
Live in or near NC? Plan to attend my summer workshops the week of July 13th through 15th. Registration information is available on the Workshop Overview page. No more school funds this year? No problem! Use the Payment Authorization Form to pay with next year's staff development funds. Workshops include:
- Innovative Approaches to Literacy Instruction
- The Dynamic Duo Math Workshop
- Making Math Easy
Live outside of NC? Since I'm not teaching in the summer, I'm usually available to travel to other schools and districts. If I'm not available, my colleague Pat Calfee will be able to help you out. Learn more on my Workshop FAQ page. |

Poetic Thoughts | Celebrate Poetry Month in April!
April is a great time to read and write poetry, especially since it's National Poetry Month. You'll find loads of resources on my Poetry Page, including this new graphic organizer called Poetic Thoughts. Before your students write free-verse poems, have them complete this graphic organizer. They can select a topic for their poem and write it in the center oval. Then in each thought bubble they'll brainstorm images related to that topic. Finally, they'll take the best of those images and use them to create their own original poetry. Start by completing one graphic organizer as a class to model the process. Then allow each student to complete their own Poetic Thoughts graphic organizer and write their own poem. If they need more instruction on poetic devices such as similes and metaphors, check out my new Exploring Poetry Mini Pack.

Have you been to www.labtvonline.org? Created by the National Defense Education Program, this site supports hands-on learning
experiences and encourages students and teachers of all ages to "learn
by doing." Best of all, it has an exciting collection of 5-minute videos that show real-life applications of science concepts. Lately I've been starting each science class with a quick visit to the site. I created a Lab TV graphic organizer to use with the site. It's quick and easy to use; students jot down the title and a few key vocabulary words and concepts. You can find this on the Science Page.
