Dear (Contact First Name),
There is still a lot of construction going on downtown. The Millcreek project seems a bit stalled. 18th Street is still closed east of "Q" Street, as is 21st Street. I saw the cement trucks working down there last week so we are hopeful the streets will reopen soon. The theater on California and "Q" Street continues. Here's a picture of the front of the theater at sunset.

New Science on Memory
We
are always looking for new places to get reliable health information. Sometimes it comes from unexpected
places. A couple of years ago I got an
ipod to keep me company while working in the garden, walking Max, and working
out. You can get these things called
podcasts, programs, radio and otherwise, that might never be available to us in
Bakersfield over conventional receivers.
One
I've recently started listening to is called RadioLab, produced by the public
radio station WNYC in New York. Host Jad
Abumrad and Robert Krulwich find all kinds of interesting topics and spend a full
hour exploring them. Their program has
many archives and I ran across one from June of last year called "Memory and
Forgetting". This is always a topic that
has fascinated me and so I downloaded and began to listen.
Many
of the things I thought about memory were wrong. For example, they started by describing what a
memory is exactly. Like many, I thought
it was something akin to a piece of paper in a filing system. To retrieve it your brain has to go through
the myriad of files to find that one that has the details of that memory. Scientists now believe it's not like that at
all. As it turns out, each time you need
to recall a memory your brain actually "rebuilds" it on the spot. That is, it takes all the memories linked to
that particular memory and reassembles them to get to the final product. That's why two people recalling the same
memory have a different take on it. Each
person's brain builds it a little differently based on the conditions in the
brain at the time. And here's the scary
part, the more often we recall a memory, the more it may change because the
brain keeps changing the build process a little each time.
The
show goes on to give examples and explain how they discovered this mechanism
which is all very fascinating and I would recommend it to anyone. If this
is indeed how a memory exists then the study of dementia will likely look at
the memory "building" process and see where it fails. Right now they seem to have a number of
compounds that will help you forget or completely erase a memory. As anyone in construction can tell you,
tearing down is always easier than building.
But it's a start, and the more they figure out how it works the quicker
it will be for them to find fixes when it fails.

B12 May help with Canker Sores
According
to research published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine,
those suffering from canker sores may have another natural treatment
option: vitamin B12
Researchers
gave 1,000mcg of vitamin B12 or a placebo) to 58 cnaker sore
patients every night for six months.
About 74% of those who took vitamin B12 went into remission,
whereas only 32% of the placebo group achieved this result. Of interest, the number of mouth sores and
the length of time before ulcers were gone shortened in both groups after four
months. These factors "were reduced
significantly at five and six months of treatment with vitamin B12,"
according to the researchers.
Overall,
the group concludes, "Vitamin B12 treatment, which is simple,
inexpensive, and low-risk, seems to be effective, for patients suffering from
canker sores regardless of the serum vitamin B12 level."
American
Heart Assn Supports Omega-6s
Increased
intake of omega-6 fatty acids is safe and healthy, according to the American Heart Association(AHA) in a recent issue of its journal, Circulation.
Upon
meta-analysis of 25 studies examining omega-6 fatty acids and Coronary Heart
Disease (CHD), AHA determined that "the consumption of at least 5% to 10% of energy
from omega-6 fatty acids reduces the risk of CHD relative to lower intakes."
There
was some controversy to this article brought by a consultant for Barlean's
Organic Oils. Herb Joiner-Bey, ND called the findings misleading. Joiner-Bey argued that the public might be
mislead to believe that it is only necessary to increase Omega-6s. He is in favor of limiting excessive intakes
of Omega-6s and balancing them with Omega-3 for the most optimal health benefits.
