PRE-CONFERENCE ACADEMY: SEEING BEYOND THE IMAGE: HOW PHOTOGRAPHY BREAKS DOWN CULTURAL ASSUMPTIONS & INSPIRES CHANGE- $170
| | Join us for an exciting day at the AjA Project's interactive, hand-on Training of Trainers (TOT) developed for 6-12th grade educators and after-school providers who are interested in either implementing a visual-arts workshop on the topic of identity and cultural literacy, or integrating AjA's tools into their existing curricula.
Participants will take part in a simulation of AjA's participatory photography workshop on cultural literacy. They will be provided with theoretical and practical information as they study, experience and create artworks communicating their own cultural identities through 12 hands-on activities. Participants will gain the knowledge, experience, resources and tools to deliver their own arts-based workshop, using photography, on the theme of identity and cultural literacy. Full curriculum, ready to be implemented, valued at $250, will be provided to all participants.
Lead Trainer Profiles Ashleigh Starke conceptualized and developed the Cultural Literacy Project in 2009. She is the Program Director at The AjA Project, where she designs, delivers and evaluates photography-based educational programs for refugee and at-risk youth. She has over 10 years of combined experience as a photojournalist and youth educator. Jena Olson is an award-winning professional photographer and has been a lead photography instructor with The AjA Project since 2009. She has over ten years of experience as a group facilitator with a focus on issues of social justice and identity.
The AjA Project is a 501(c)3 organization in San Diego that provides refugee and at-risk youth with the tools and the training to use visual arts as a method of cultural exchange and personal transformation. Since 2000, AjA's nationally recognized and formally evaluated programs have helped 1500 youth build positive identity, improve behavioral health, increase literacy skills and use art to facilitate community dialogue. AjA has shared youths' artwork with over 1.2 million viewers through large-scale public exhibits, including the National Geographic Society's Explorers' Hall and United Nations Headquarter. AjA was also a recipient of the Coming Up Taller Presidential award for excellence in youth programming. Former First Lady Laura Bush has praised AjA as "an outstanding program that helps youth discover their talents and unleash their imaginations in unique ways. [These] photographs conveying stories of immigration to America give children a new perspective about other people's journeys to find freedom."
